virtual method inheritance/overriding in zope?

Dear Zope users. I have what seems to be a very simple issue, and yet reading the FAQ didn't seem to help, and digging thru the archives wasn't very helpful either, so here goes. My issue is: I would expect that the acquisition mechanism behaves akin to the use of virtual methods in Java or regular methods in Python (ie: when there are more than one methods/attributes of the same name in a hierarchy of classes, then the most derived name takes precedence). However, I am finding that this is not the case. To illustrate, I have a folder hierarchy that contains the following DTML files. (I have listed the filenames, and the text of each file alongside, since there is only 1 line in each file). /x "this is /x\n<dtml-var y>\n<dtml-var z>" /y "this is /y" /A/y "this is /A/y" /A/z "this is /A/z" Notice that my intent is to override the contents of /y with /A/y when referencing the URL /A/x. Instead, I find that it is /y that gets picked up in place of /A/y. To be explicit, rendering /A/x looks as follows: this is /x this is /y this is /A/z instead of: this is /x this is /A/y this is /A/z Doesn't this make it harder than necessary to come up with a file structure that promotes reuse (file "x" in this case)? Is there some fundamental issue with the acquisition mechanism that simply precludes such virtual attribute/method inheritance? Bulk User Import

I currently have 2800 users in a database. It contains their UserIDs and encrypted passwords. Can I either A) point Zope to MySQL to use this DB for user validation in Zope or B) import the data from the MySQL DB into Zope? Thanks Allen May MCSi Web Admin 800.842.1702 x7628

Far Simpler Solution to Including Script-Generated String!

I stumbled, absolutely by accident, on a HowTo called "The difference between 'foo' and foo." that held a much more elegant key to this problem I've been describing and fighting with the last two days. It turns out this will work just fine: <dtml-var "_[pagetoget]"> where pagetoget is the name of the script object that generates the string that is the URL I want to load at this point in the page (or the name of a file or object to be rendered at this point in the page). I did a search for _.render on Zope.org in hopes of finding some documentation for that builtin, didn't find any, but did find this little tidbit. THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE! HOW DID IT HAPPEN?

Follow me... I had a folder called *Store* in one of my virtual hosts built in Zope. I left for the gym. When I came back the folder was gone. Vanished. Okay, that's strange, but since I'm just now finishing up building a brand new server I had a *.zexp file for the entire virtual host on my PC at home. I ftp'd it to the server, moved the old corrupt version and imported the backup. The folder was still gone. Okay, fine, I still have the folder on the old server, right, so let's just make a *.zexp of that. Nope. Gone. Now, I'm convinced nobody's been messing around in my servers. They'd have to know way too much about these particulars, and why would they target just one folder that hasn't even been published (hyperlinked) to the rest of the site! This is just too weird for words. Any ideas? TIA, BenO

A small correction: >> attribute is a boolean attribute and everything works fine except that "attribute" is false << I mean if "attribute" is boolean "true" everything works fine, if "attribute" is set to "false" then the page is not rendered correctly

This produces an AttributeError, with an ErrorValue: _hash_. --- as i understand it you have objects in the same folder as the python scripts. and the objuect ids are similar ias in dayx.htm. try this first, without the python script <dtml-var "_.getitem('day1.htm',1)"> (tested and works) you need to check what your python script return

Getting permission information in Python (hasRole/getRoles ?)

In a method of a (python) product, I need to select the objects (eg in a Folder) for which a visitor (REQUEST.AUTHENTICATED_USER) has a given permission (eg 'Access contents information'). I tried the following scheme: obj = the_item_to_be_tested if REQUEST.AUTHENTICATED_USER.hasRole( obj, ['Access contents information'])): # add obj to result list But hasRole() always returns None... I then tried to use the method getRoles(). The documentation (in Products/OFSP/help/AuthenticatedUser.py) says: def getRoles(object): """ Returns a list of the roles the user has on the given object (in the current context?) Permission -- Always available """ but when I try: REQUEST.AUTHENTICATED_USER.getRoles(obj) I get a TypeError. Strangely, I observed that without arguments, REQUEST.AUTHENTICATED_USER.getRoles() returns: ('Anonymous',) (for a request from 'Anoymous User'). So I need help from a Zope guru ! Emmanuel
