Zope can separate data, logic, and presentation and have them all available as managed content. As we begin to mix Zope into our legacy site, I'm wondering how best to leverage this. In particular, I'm wondering about how not to have the two people who know Zope now have to do everything that uses Zope, without expecting staff who have enough trouble as it is with HTML trying to cope with Python or SQL or even the more esoteric parts of DTML. Has anyone written up more details on this subject, for instance, guidance on how to get the best fit between your staff's expertise and Zope's factoring capabilities? Has anyone laid out the training needs for staff specializations? Chris

ZMySQLDA or ZMySQLDA

Hallo, as I can see there are two independent DatabaseAdapters for MySQL. The first is from mordred with the current versions 1.1.4 (stable) and 1.2.0 (developement), http://www.zope.org/Members/mordred/ZMySQLDA. The second one is from andy dustman with current version 2.0.6 , http://www.zope.org/Members/adustman/Products/ZMySQLDA. I am running now zope 2.2.4 with ZMySQLDA 1.1.3 (the first one) without any problems. Now I will update to zope 2.3.2, so I am thinking again about the right adapter. Can anybody give me some informations about the advantages / disadvantages of both adapters. Why are there 2 different adapteres doing the same thing. Any help is welcome. Thank you zopistas. Thanks David. That does help. I think my confusion is in thinking about concepts from the ASP world and seeing how they are emulated at least in concept. Many of the flaws of ASP - most of which exist in the design pattern (or lack thereof) of how applications are built dont carry over into the ZOpe world due to its OO nature. Do you agree with this? I see the obvious difference of elements (what as you said would of been included in the asp world) being called as objects and pages being built from a few tags with supporting code contained in each tag object. >From that point - what is best practice? In terms of business logic and application logic - how do you (coming from ASP also) structure your pages and applications with Zope? Are you in fact using DTML to build pages and within each object your referencing other objects, html, and python scripts or what? I would be interested to see (or help design/draw up) some architecture diagrams showing process and program flows... this would be helpful to newbies like myself - which there are sure to more of. Proposal of forking the zope@zope.org list

Hello co-zopers! The mailload on zope(a)zope.org is quite large and I dare suggest that I am not the only one having some sort of difficulty in sorting out the various topics on the list. I propose that we split^H^H^Hfork the zope(a)zope.org into the following sublists, which of course only reveal my own topics of interest, but I have the feeling that they would actually prove useful, especially for new users. The proposed list of lists :) reflect topics that I feel are frequently discussed and/or topics where there is no obvious preferred way of doing things: Proposed list Proposed topic ------------- -------------- zope-db - Disscussion of (external & gadfly) database access to/from Zope zope-um - Discussion on how to manage users, and the various products to extend/replace built-in zope user management zope-ws - Discussion on how to use zope with other webservers (like apache, squid, etc) and related techniques/products (rewrite rules, SiteAccess, VHM, fast_cgi, etc) zope-adm - Discussion on how to administer zope and problems/bugs related to this zope - Current list. mostly on how to develop IN zope (as opposed to zope-dev which is on how to develop zope). Here are discussions on DTML and stuff... zope-newbies - For the zopistas-to-be :-) Topics for new users, simpler howtos, best practices, etc... Cooments? Calling a dtml-method that has an extension (Was: Re: [Zope] Creating files on server)

Hi again, For secure reasons I have dropped the idea of creating a physical file on the server. Instead I can create the files dynamically inside Zope and link to the method. I have a method called fncSmileGenerate.smil I call this from another method. As you can read in z2.py : # User id to run ZServer as. Note that this only works under Unix, and if # ZServer is started by root. UID='nobody' This is not effective on NT server. Thus, could somebody tell me Howto to start Zope as 'root', choose the UID when zope switches identity to a user specified at installation. I suppose with your answer I should be capable to 'mount' a NT network volume in Zope with LocalFS. Cheers, FR.
