Very good point. It's true that something done right the first time is better, and going to full nine yards to achieve the full goal instead of this century's Henry Ford'ism of de-engineering is admirable... But, remember that HTML as a standard was a hack to begin with. One big hack. A basis that came after the complexities of SGML and a possible solution to bringing ARPNET (its not my day, so did i get the lingo right?) to the mass it did. My point here is that Andressen's 'keep it simple stupid' rendering engine and MS's 'assume the worst about the HTML and render bloody anything' are both required steps towards something better. More to the original point, the masses standardized VHS tapes because they were cheaper to manufacture and cheaper to buy. Sony and Toshiba picked up on it right away. Mozilla gone Netscape was a bid for the computerized VHS against the Beta MS monster IE that we all see more than anything in our logs. These 'ill-concieved graphical features' are yours and my idea of a cover up over faulty implementation of a standard, or even lack there-of, but demographically, but its those features that rope the masses into pulling the stats for investors to steer there cool millions towards this guy instead of that. The user's dont care anyhow about a feature until Wired magazine or Howard Stern on the radio told them to. We just have to sit and wait for the dust to settle. All I'm saying is that the web experts will spurn the ideas to excel the web, the public will smash it down becuase they dont get it, and then years later another medio-bloke will regurgitate it and be the next George Nice. So in the meantime, though NS4 is usually my worst day-mare, it at least 'gives me some good ideas in the meantime to NOT do it that way the next'. -Edison. Personally, I don't know too many people who find the Web user-friendly. Most of them use it in spite of, not because of, all the ill-conceived "features" that the browser vendors and in-love-with-their-own-hip-selves graphic designers have inflicted on us. Whereas if the browser makers had produced better products (i.e. less buggy and more standards compliant), that would give developers more time to create good user interfaces instead of spending all their time on compatibility kludges. I'm not sure they *would* create good UIs, just that they might be able to if they chose. Which would be a win-win situation, no? Matt Gushee

Hello, Can someone lease help me to setup zope and ZEO correctly. I am following the http://www.zope.org/Members/dshaw/AdvancedSiteSetup and got to - % cd InstanceHome % ./zctl.py start and .... Is ZEO working?

Hello I am trying to run Zope and ZEO on the same server, but I am unsure if it is working correctly. problem with dtml-var displaying None for NULL from postgres

Hello all, Up until this week, we were running Zope on a windows ME box against an access database using ODBC for our first stage of development. Now, I have migrated the database and the zope instance over to a Linux box running Red Hat 7.1, Zope 2.3.2, Python 1.5.2, PostgreSQL 7.1, with the PoPy 2.0.1/ZPoPyDA 1.2 connecting everything up and we are running successfully. My question is this: we have quite a large number of pages where we use the <dtml-var> tag to dump a field from the database (after a select). On the previous setup, when the field was NULL in the database, the var tag happily did nothing. Now, on the new server, if a Null is found, it prints out None instead of nothing. For now, I am manually modifying the pages and wrapping each of the var tags with an if tag like this: <dtmil-if field><dtml-var field></dtml-if> which gives the expected behavior. This works, but is time consuming. I have examined each of the pieces (Zope/ZPoPyDA/PoPy/PostgreSQL) and cannot find an easy way to change this behavior. After reading some related information on the mailing list, I think the culprit is most likely the DA. Unfortunately, I was not successfull in installing the psycopg DA and the current version of egenics mxDateTime so I cannot compare the two DA's (ZPoPyDA and psycopgDA). Is this expected behavior? Is the Zope 2.3.2, Python 1.5.2, ZODBCDA, MSAccess configuration simply different in some aspect? Why are we getting different behaviors with everything the same except a different database? If there is no way around this, is there a faster/better way to modify the pages so that they don't display anything for a NULL field? Thanks for your help, -Chris

Not from ZMI. You can write a hotfix product: http://www.zope.org/Members/Caseman/Dynamic_Hotfix It works great for me. I use hotfixes to propagate my changes to ZMI across many versions. Hi: I wrote this PythonScript: s1 = { 'a': 1, 'b': 0 } s2 = { 'a': s1['a'] and s1['b'] } return s2 and Zope does not accept this. Zope returns directly a list item is out of range... When I replace the 'and' by '+', then everything is ok!
