ANNOUNCE: Pound - reverse proxy and load balancer - v1.0

This is to announce the release of Pound v1.0. New in this release: - Pound is now declared to be production-quality code - fixed a few minor problems, such as the ordering of certificate file - removed thread auto clean-up due to a bug in the Linux implementation of libpthread - added support for additional WebDAV commands (Microsoft-style) - restructured request match patterns - added support for HA ports for back-end hosts - added support for optional HTTPS extra header The software is at version 1.0 (production quality). Further testing (especially under heavy loads), improvements and suggestions are welcome. What is Pound (from the Web page) - a reverse-proxy: it passes requests from client browsers to one or more back-end servers. - a load balancer: it will distribute the requests from the client browsers among several back-end servers, while keeping session information. - an SSL wrapper: Pound will decrypt HTTPS requests from client browsers and pass them as plain HTTP to the back-end browsers. - an HTTP/HTTPS sanitizer: Pound will verify requests for correctness and accept only well-formed ones. - an HTTP/1.1 to 1.0 proxy. - a fail-over-server: should a back-end server fail, Pound will take note of the fact and stop passing requests to it until it recovers. - a request redirector - it will pass client requests to separate groups of servers, based on required URL and the presence or absence of headers (pattern matching) Pound was specifically developed to serve as a front-end for multiple instances of Zope running on top of a common ZEO storage, but can be used with any other web server. A patch for the Python source of z2.py is available as part of the distribution to allow using Pound's SSL capabilities. Pound is currently in use in several medium to large volume sites and seems to be holding up quite well: largest reported site does about 3.5 million requests per day, peaking at over 300 requests per second. The speed is well superior to other, equivalent solutions, the configuration is much simpler and the necessary resources (CPU, RAM, disk) are much, much lower. Pound is distributed under the GPL. Hi, ich weiß, daß ich auf den Wert etwaiger Cookies über den REQUEST zugreifen kann. Was ich nicht weiß: wie kann ich zwischen einem Cookie und einem 'normalen' REQUEST-Wert unterscheiden? Gibt es ein Objekt, das eine Methode has_key() oder so hat? Der Anwendungsfall: Eine mehrsprachige Site. Die Ausgabesprache wird folgendermaßen ermittelt: 1. Der Besucher wählt sie selbst aus (Klick auf einen Link --> REQUEST-Variable; Cookie und SESSION-Variable werden gesetzt) 2. Es existiert eine SESSION-Variable 3. Es existiert ein Cookie. Die SESSION-Variable wird gesetzt. 4. Die Standardvariablen HTTP_ACCEPT_LANGUAGE und evtl. HTTP_USER_AGENT werden ausgewertet 5. Die Default-Sprache wird verwendet. Dafür muß ich zwischen Cookie und normalem Request unterscheiden. It is not the same. MS Access uses ethe Jet database engine. But, really, it's all quite simple (at least, in my experience, but I'm not trying to bridge a Zope instance under Linux to a Windows box's ODBC source). You want to create a system database connection to the Access database. This will provide the ODBC data source on the Windows box that Zope can talk to. Try looking at Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Data Sources (ODBC). You'll instruct the OS to use the particular Access files, and to give it a global name of your choosing, which you'll use when you set up the Zope connector. There might be things you have to do on the Linux end to make the actual connection to the Windows machine, but doing the above will expose the Access database as an ODBC data source. Alternatively, if you have an MS Office 2k cd, hunt around for MSDE -- this is a freely redistributable drop-in module that looks and acts just like SQL Server, with some limitations. Could you point me to info howto handle this with mozilla (1.2)? I just had a look in the preferences but couldn't find settings concerning memory use for cookies. Zope and ESI, my problems are solved.

Hi all, I just noticed the press release on Zope.org regarding Edge Side Includes in Zope with Squid. http://biz.yahoo.com/iw/021030/048171.html I posted in July looking for just this type of functionality, and now it seems Zope is going to cater to my needs (yet again). I am posting here to see if anyone knows how soon this is likely to be implemented. I imagine I won't be able to use it for the current project, but it could be quite useful in the near future. So anyone who can provide me with more information on details or timeframes, that would be fantastic. Thanks, Alec Munro

Tracebacks in Zope 2.6.0?

How do I get the source code tracebacks in 2.6.0. You know, those who used to come under the error mesage when you had a -D. [NEW] Forms: Allows you to create (web) forms in a structured, secure and easy way. First create the *schema*. This is just an *interface* with schema information on it. From the schema, a form can be generated automatically using widgets from an extensible set. User input to the form is then automatically converted to the value types the schema expects, and can then be validated against the schema to check whether the values fit the schema criteria. If any errors occur they can be displayed to the end user (possibly along with the form itself). (thanks to Martijn Faassen) [CORRECTED] I18N: In Zope 3, i18n covers all that is needed to have an application be able to be switched from one language to another, or being able to support multiple languages at the same time, be it for its interface or for its content objects themselves. That covers input and output encoding, translatability and actual translation of views and contents, the tools and formats necessary to provide those translations, maybe even the translation workflows that authors will use. Zope provides objects for representing interfaces and a facility for asserting that objects implement interfaces. Interface objects were added to Zope for specification and documentation purposes. Zope 3 uses interfaces primarily for classification and for connecting components based on compatible interfaces. Future versions of Zope may utilize interfaces for type safety, as part of the security system. [NEW] Placeful: An adjective describing an object that resides in the *ZODB* (and so is persistent) and is potentially pertinent only to the ZODB branch (or "folder" and all children) in which it resides. Similar to standard programming "local" concept of variables. Opposite of *Placeless*. [NEW] Placeless: An adjective describing an object that resides outside of the typically addressed Zope database, and is available to all objects irresepective of their location in the ZODB (or what "folder" they reside in). Usually not persistent, but instantiated in memory on each program start. Somewhat similar to standard programming "global" concept of variables. Opposite of *Placeful*. [CORRECTED] Relationship Service: A proposed central place to store relationships between objects, giving some very simple and basic relational-database-like functionality. A client of the *ObjectHub*. [NEW] Schema: A Zope 3 framework built on the Interface package that allows you to specify details about attributes of the object that implements the schema. This includes type information (string, integer, etc) as well as restrictions on what values may be set (maximum length, can be None, etc) which can be automatically validated. The schema framework allows you to specify this information in an object's interface. Schema information is used by several other Zope 3 systems, such as metadata (properties) and forms. The schema package lives in 'lib/python/Zope/Schema'. STEVE ALEXANDER: I spent a few days tracking down the source of the two month old bug http://collector.zope.org/Zope3-dev/78, fixing it, adding unit tests, and fixing the fix's repercussions. I've continued helping CodeWorks with their work on the cache manager. Barry Warsaw and I had a chat about what would make a good MailHost replacement for Zope 3. Some important things include transaction-aware mail delivery (so that you don't get mails sent when there are conflict errors or aborted transactions), and mail delivery in a separate thread, so it doesn't hold up a page's response. Barry's writing up a proposal on this, and I have some time put aside to help with this. I refactored the unit tests for ContextMethods, making them more elegant, and increasing their coverage. I reimplemented SimpleMethodWrapper to work better, and added in support for context-aware properties too. This is useful when you want to use properties in a Service implementation. KAPIL THANGAVELU (as hazmat on IRC): Document Autogeneration I've been working on using docgeneration tools [epydoc] to generate api docs from the z3 source. [Not from interfaces yet, from what he said, but hopefully the tools will go there!] INFRAE'S MARTIJN FAASSEN: Sprintathon Infrae is hosting a Zope 3 Content Management Sprintathon to be held december 2-6 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. We already have an interesting and large cast of developers who are planning to attend. [HELP] FTP - Limit user reached

Hello, I use Nescape Composer in order to edit the Web content of my Zope sites using FTP. It's work great, but i have a problem : When i edit a HTML page containing few images, Composer doesn't manage to load them : in fact it does one FTP request for each image ==> I have the message : "User limit reached". Can anyone help me ? Thanks in advance. Frederic. PS : Excuse my english.
