Tickling ZEO?

I've been looking for a "standard" way of saying "hey ZEO, are you up?" that I can work into our failover system. (btw, our production zeo server is nearly read-only; all changes are made on dev and then we sync to production using ZSyncer. So I'm not worried about losing state when we fail over.) The simplest thing would be this, swiped from zctl.py: def _check_for_service(host, port): """Return 1 if server is found at (host, port), 0 otherwise.""" s = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM) try: s.connect( (host, int(port)) ) return 1 except socket.error: return 0 So we just make a raw socket connection to the ZEO port and say we succeeded if there's anything there. However, that doesn't seem very robust. Is it possible for ZEO to get into a state where it accepts socket connections but won't deliver data? I don't know, and I feel safer assuming "yes". As pointed out here in some thread or other months ago, we could always set up a script that makes a write transaction every so often, but this is Bad. the ZODB would grow and grow and grow with pointless undo data ... So here's what we came up with, hacked out of stuff found in the ZEO test scripts : we make a dummy ZEO client and connect it and try to pull the root object. def testzeo(): storage=ZEO.ClientStorage.ClientStorage((host, port), name='ZEO Heartbeat Test at %s:%s ' % (host, port), wait_for_server_on_startup=0, client=None, debug=1, cache_size=0) storage.registerDB(DummyDB(), None) storage.load('\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0', '') storage._call.__haveMainLoop = 0 storage.notifyDisconnected = dummy storage.close() return 1 If that fails for any reason, ZEO is down. As far as we can tell, this *works*: if ZEO is shut down we get an error, if it's not, we get 1. Great. But this seems very non-kosher. I've never heard of anybody opening and closing ZEO connections every 5 seconds on a production site. And we've seen a couple of very weird errors just after ZEO starts - a page loads in Zope, following a link gives a weird error (like no doctstring on a DTML method), then all links after that are fine. I can't help but think that our test script is contributing to this sporadic, only-on-startup flakiness, but I have no real evidence for that. So back to the original question... simple sql user auth

hi! is there a way of authenticating through sql, the simplest way? i dont need all stuuf from exUserFolder, no registration form, no password or details change, no mailing, nothing, just a SELECT user_id,password,roles FROM users WHERE user_id=xyz ... perhaps with a z sql query ... i tried to install loginmanager & zpatterns too, but it seemed to me that: = it is old code and perhaps deprecated too = everywhere zope 2.3 or 2.4 was mentioned, there were lots of errors with my 2.5.1 zope is there another way? thanks for the help, k

Database connection problem in products folder

Hi, I need to create a database connection in my products folder. Creating the connection works without problems. Also, creating the z-sqlquery works. FTP error when using plone/CMF

Hi I have problem with ftp in my plone site. I get an error when i try to upload files to a Zope folder but not when uploading to a Plone Folder via ftp. (error creating file). So It's ok to upload to a Plone Folder but to the standard Zope Folder. The problem is that i don't want to add content to the folder and I need the traversel lookup of index_html. (Can you do that with a Plone folder or do you always get the default view?) I use plone 1.0b1 and zope 2.5.1. _________________________________________________________________ Broadband? Dial-up? Post Copy actions

Hi all: I want to add some actions after an object has been copied. I have supposed that I need to rewrite the manage_clone, but in the source of manage_close I have seen a method than can be util... ob._postCopy() But this method is commented... What is the best way to implemente some actions after an object is copied...? I need to rewrite manage_clone or manage_copyObject to do the things I need...? Check uploaded file for valid contents

Hello, I wonder if there is an elegant method to check a file which is intended to be stored as (Ext)File in the ZODB according to the validity of its contents. The reason is thatr I have to store some PDF files but I have users who do not really know the difference between DOC and PDF. I want to refuse DOCs (or any other non-PDF) to enforce users to upload just PDF. Kind regards ANdreas.

MySQL-Python problems on Win32

I am trying to install the MySQL-Python-0.9.0 package onto my WinXP Prof. machine with Zope 2.5.1. Having problems: the MySQL-Python-0.9.0.exe installer stops with: "Select Python Installation to use: Select Installation directory:" Well,... there is nothing to select in this window. And the textbox won't let me type an installation directory either. This is as far as I can get with this exe installer. I have to cancel out of it because it won't let me go to "Next-->". I've also tried the "platform independent" MySQL-Python-0.9.0.tgz from sourceforge. Have tried running the `python setup.py build` and `python setup.py install` commands from the Windows command line. But I get this error: .... ....build process seems to be going okay.... .... building '_mysql' extension cl.exe /c /nologo /0x /MD /W3 /GX -Ic:\mysql\include "-IC:\Program Files\Website\bin\Include" /Tc_mysql.c /Fobuild\temp.win32-2.1\Release\_mysql.obj error: command 'cl.exe' failed: No such file or directory Don't get me wrong: I'm a serious Linux user. But I need to make some traveling presentations on the merits of Zope and I only have a WinXP laptop right now for my demonstrations/presentations. No Linux laptop just yet. :( Any help getting MySQL adapters installed on Windows will be much appreciated! Thanks, Bryan P.S. I have tried both the .exe and .tgz in versions 0.9.0 as well as 0.9.2. And I have tried both of these on Zope 2.6.0 on Windows as well. No luck in any of these combinations.

invalid date problem

I have a Zsql query that returns a date field as part of the result. If the result contains a row where that field has not yet been filled in, I get the following error: Error Type: ValueError Error Value: Invalid value, 0000-00-00, for DATE_START in record 6 How can I work around this?

FTP access with FastCgi Apache

Hi everybody, I have the problenm that after installing Zope with Apache it is not possible to accesss the Zope folders with an ftpclient because there is no python server which handles these requests. What can I do in order to make ftp access possible. Regards Daniel

Xron is useful to give you reports and other complicated tasks, but sometimes it doesn't work when you need manager rights. I guess you could first test your xronMethods and see if they work. If they don't, then you will have to use cron + wget + a protected .wgetrc file to hide the username and password. Perhaps some people will say: "why don't you allways use the second method?" - Easy, I want to keep most of my content inside the Zope DB and also I want to test it on a Windows plataform. Other disadvantage of the second method is that you could forget to copy some files when migrating to another server. Anyway, not always is possible to have what you want.
