Zope/Interbase and Backup Functions

Hello everyone, Just a quick "how do I do that?" type question. I am using the kinterbasdb Zope Database Adapter to access my Interbase Server through a web interface. I would like to build some DB backup functionality into the interface. It seems you need to use the Interbase 'gbak' executable or the InterBase Services API functions to perform backups. I imagine that I could write something in C++ that uses the Services API and put a SWIG wrapper around it. Then, call the wrapper with a Zope External Method (python). This would be a bit of work for me though, because I have never used SWIG. Can anyone give me some suggestions on how to add this functionality to my program? Perhaps a simpler method? passing ZPT variables to Javascript

If I defined variables in my ZPT using tal:define, how do I pass these variables to a javascript function without getting an error? maybe importing a Zope module

Heya, Is there a good reliable (documented?:) way for a product to tell if it's being imported by Zope or not? I've got a product which may or may not be imported by Zope. If it is, then it should load up the Zope-specific stuff and make it available - but if it's not, then it should ignore all that stuff (because it'll raise errors on trying to get DTMLFile and similar), and just present a simpler view of itself to the world. I can try and import as though it's a Zope module, and wrap that in try...excepts, but that seems dodgy - it'd mean I lose my nice tracebacks in the product control panel if I break the product at any time. Is there a better way? KevinL

After following some blind alleys (pam-python seems to be only available for py 1.5 and os.setgroups() is only available in py 2.2) the solution was to run in /etc/init.d/zope 'su www-data -c 'zope-z2 ARGS'' instead of just 'zope-z2 ARGS' so that PAM is called by su. I didn't even have to adjust the zope-z2 script because the os.setuid() is not called when it is not run as root. Data.fs.lock and some other stuff in /var/lib/zope/var is now owned by www-data instead of root, so it is not necessarily best practice but works. Have a nice weekend, -- Holger Blasum

How to organize users in "groups"

Hi, I'm building a CMF site for a client who wants to organize users within groups. The twofold purpose of this organization is: 1) to be able to send mail to specific constituencies of users; and 2) to assign permissions to specific constituencies of users. My client wants the application to have it's own custom administrative interface (he does not want the site's administrators to be exposed to ZMI) that will enable the administrators to set permissions for specific groups on specific folders. The permissions that the administrator sees may be simplified versions of the more complex sets of permissions you see through ZMI. For example, for a folder the administrator would only see the permissions "No Access," "Read Only," "Submit File," and "Approve File." It is also important to know that the site is structured as multi-community portal. In other words, members are defined at the level of the portal, and they will have permission to belong to specific communities within the portal. Each community will have the same functionality (content folders, discussions, news, etc.) but the content will be different for each. It seems to me that the simplest way to do this is is to implement a "group" as a role. In other words, what my client is calling a "group" would be the equivalent of a Zope "role." When the administrator adds a new group, he would under the hood be adding a new role. When he adds a user to one or more groups, he would be associating the user with the roles (users need to be able to belong to more than one group at a time). Listing the members of a group and sending mail to them would mean filtering the user objects based on their role (assuming this can be done). As for the simplified permissions, there would need to be a dictionary in a script that correlates each of these simple permissions with one or more of the native Zope permissions. I think the only major problem with my approach stems from the fact that the groups/roles would be different for each comunity -- they would not apply to the entire portal. However, users would still be defined at the portal level because they will have access to multiple communities. Through ZMI, it looks like you can only assign a role to a user if the role has been defined at the same level as the user in the hierarchy or at a containing level in the hierarchy; in this case, I want to be able to assign a role that has been defined at a level below the level at which the user is defined. So my question is: is there a workaround for assigning a role to a user when the role is defined further down in the hierarchy from where the user is, or is there some other way entirely that I should be solving this problem? List of dictionaries in ZPT

Hi all I have a script that returns a list of dictionaries to a ZPT. I have tried all I knew without success in printing out the results in a table. In the following ZPT the address at list should be visible. HELP!!!

I was reading the administrator's guide and I came acrross the need to use the EMERGENCY USER. I accidentally changed the admin password. I was trying to change another user accounts password and instead changed that one. I typed in 43046 as the password, but it made it 8 characters when i went back, before I knew it I accidentally logged out of zope and now I am stuck with the admin password as some unknown 8 characters. I treid the emergency user and it doesn't work I went to command prompt in Windows 2000 and i went to C:/Python22 then ran "python C:\PROGRA~1\NFHL\zpasswd.py access" from the prompt I filled out the form but the emergency user does not work. I tried logging in through my browser. Am I supposed to log in a differnt way wth the emergency user? I just need to change the admin password back. BTW: I love Zope. Keep up the good work. Catching Dababase IntegrityError

Hi, Does anyone know how to catch this data integrity error? I was trying to give a more friendlier message than the Zope error_message when someone accidentially enters a duplicate Primary Key name of an existing record. Error Type: IntegrityError Error Value: (1062, "Duplicate entry 'Big Foot' for key 1") I have tried the following in my <dtml-var standard_error_message> , but it did not worked: <dtml-if "error_type=='IntegrityError'"> <h3>Duplicate Entry!</h3> <LI>This is a duplicate entry of an existing Database record.
