Products, adding new icons

Hola, Zopatistas: Is it possible to change/add icons to a product created through ControlPanel/product management? I've searched zope.org, the archives, the book (2.6), and the developer's guide and it seems that using a ZClass is required. Since ZClasses are obviously something I'll need to learn anyway, I'll be pursuing this solution for now... Based on past experience, I suspect I'll get an answer from you list members before I can finish my first class. For that, I wish to express my thanks for the quick and effective advice I've received thus far. I'm looking forward to seeing a question I know the answer to, just to return the favor. Danny Morgan

Is Parsed XML thread safe?

I am seeing some buggy behavior in an application where users can edit XML documents through a variation on the ZMI interface, behavior that could be explained by thread interaction. In particular, I have seen instances where saving a edited XML document ends up overwriting another XML document. Has anyone else observed similar behavior?

Page Templates: AttributeError versus Unauthorized

Greetings Why does it happen, for some expressions in Page Templates, that when trying to use an object with restrictive permissions one just gets an AttributeError instead of the apparently expected Unauthorized error (which would induce the expected username/password request)? I am using Zope 2.6.0b1 (Linux, Python 2.1.3) and observed the following also after replacing its Page Templates product with the latest cvs.zope.org version (Zope27/lib/python/Products/PageTemplates). Note that line numbers in the traceback below refer to these PageTemplate files and not to those of 2.6.0b1. An example: I have a standard_page_template of the form <metal:block define-macro="page"> <!DOCTYPE ... > <html ...> <head> ... </head> <body ...> [page header stuff...] <a tal:attributes="href ..." tal:content="structure python:here.logo_l.tag( ... )"> [... more page header stuff] <metal:block define-slot="body"> </metal:block> </body> </html> </metal:block> One of my tests involved restricting the "View" permission of the `logo_l' image (used above) to the Manager role and to another (user-defined) role. Then: CASE 1: when accessing a Page Template (PT) document like <metal:block use-macro="here/standard_page_template/macros/page"> <metal:block fill-slot="body"> [... page contents ...] </metal:block> </metal:block> the browser requests a username/password pair, as expected. And if I fail to provide those, I get (also as expected) the following error: Error Type: Unauthorized Error Value: You are not allowed to access logo_l in this context CASE 2 (indirect standard_page_template usage): when accessing the PT document <tal:block replace="structure python:container.forum.arts( ... )"> </tal:block> where forum/arts is a Python Script ending with return arts_front_page ( ... ) and arts_front_page has the *same structure* as the document in Case 1 (i.e., finally invoking standard_page_template), I get Error Type: AttributeError Error Value: logo_l without any username/password request. python script getattr for defined function

If I define a function inside a PythonScript, can I get that function by name somehow using getattr() ? Kate (KDE) as external editor

Hi all! To avoid flame wars, militant GNOME and Non-KDE-users are kindly requested not to read any further. ;-) Thought some of you folks would want to know (just discovered that possibility - sorry if someone feels bored...): If you open a connection to Zope with a KDE FTP client, e. g. KBear <http://kbear.sourceforge.net/>, you can drag&drop a file from there to Kate (the KDE 2 editor), and Kate will work with that file over FTP - which means it doesn't work on any temporary copy, but saves changes directly back to Zope. No External Editor Product needed. This also works if you provide a FTP address (with username) in the open dialog. Products, ZClasses, Icon Paths and images

I've created a 'myProduct' in the Products folder, with 'myZClass' as one of its objects; when in 'Basic' view: (.../Products/myProduct/myZClass/propertysheets/basic/manage), there exists the option of specifying an Icon Path and even uploading (?) an image. The 'Browse' button works as it does with an Image object, but there is no 'Upload' button, only a 'Save Changes' button. (This is with Zope 2.51 on Windows). The icon file I would like to associate with the product is .../myProduct/www/myIcon, which is an Image object, a 16x16 GIF. When I enter 'www/myIcon' as the icon path and save the changes, no image shows up, and where the product is installed, it displays the name of the ZClass. For what it's worth, if I enter 'p_/User_icon' as the path, the user icon does show up. Thanks, Danny

document_src permissions error

Hi - I'm using Zope 2.5.1 with Python 2.1.1 under Linux 2.4.18 and I'm having the following problem: I have a search engine built using ZCatalog which summarizes the documents sort of like google does when it outputs them to the user. The only problem is that I'm having problems with the document_src() not doing the permissions correctly. I have enclosed the summarize area with: getSecurityManager().getUser().has_permission('View management screens', object): and also tried getSecurityManager().checkPermissions('View management screens', object): For users that do not have access to some of the documents, they are correctly denied access and the summary doesn't print. The strange error appears when I try to search for the same thing from a user which can view the source for that document (I checked using the management interface). It gives a "unable to access document_src() in this context". For now I'm just doing the document_src() in an external method (which also does the summary), but I believe this to be a bug. Is Zope 3's HTTP server ready?

I have a few web applications that use Quixote [1] to perform path traversal (Quixote having borrowed the idea from Zope). In my setup, Apache passes the request on to one of a number of long-running SCGI [2] (similar to Fast CGI) processes, which then call upon Quixote. I'm interested in alternatives to using several SCGI processes. There has been discussion in Quixote circles on having an integrated HTTP server, and some work has been done with Medusa and Twisted. The attraction with both of these is the possibility of using a lighter mechanism than multiple processes for dealing with concurrent requests. However my experience with the Quixote/Medusa approach had some troubles, and I now have some uncertainties about whether Twisted would be the right approach [1]. From what I've read on this list, Zope 3's HTTP server looks like it has a good design; my question is whether it is in a ready enough state yet to do simple object publishing on a production server, either using Zope 3's own path traversal mechanisms or by passing the request on to Quixote. I wouldn't need Zope's security mechanisms, acquisition, object database, or other stuff, so it wouldn't matter if those parts of Zope 3 are not yet ready. I'm not sure if this is the problem, but you're installing the wrong phyton version, you have to install version 2.1.3. It's known that zope can fail if you install other version than the official one. Regards, Josef.
