Which user mgmt prod/technique for sharing user info with other apps?

I'm looking for some advice please. My (yet another cms) Zope application needs to work transparently with a user management platform based on php and maybe even perl - the overall application lets customers do lots of stuff like: manage account, manage e-mail adds, domains, services, sites (cms). User information, including what level of access (role) they have per-site, is stored in a postgresql db. I think we're using Apache to set unique session ids which are stuffed into cookies/urls. Using this sessin id, my zope app needs to recognise the user without re-prompting for credentials, and know her roles. Also, any links back to the other parts of the system need to preserve the session info, but that's OT I guess. Which of the user management products fits the bill best? Or what should I read to be able to make a more educated decision? Thanks, Felix.

Perl scripts

Hello, The Zope Book mentions that you can use Perl with Zope - but that's all I've found about Perl usage. I have to convert some database query to an Excel file and the only way I know to do this is the Spreadsheet::WriteExcel module. Thus I would like to write a Perl script using this module but I have no idea how to use Perl at all. Alternatively I would like to do the conversion with Python if this is possible. I'm trying to work out how Zope's import path works. I've got a debian standard package install, which has two Products directories - one in /usr/lib/zope/lib/python/Products, the other in /var/lib/zope/Products - the first is for package-provided products, the second is for user-installed products. /var/lib/zope is listed in zopectl as 'INSTANCE_HOME', which seems perfectly reasonable. I've got CookieCrumbler, and a few other things, installed in /var/lib/zope/Products. I'm currently trying to get some unit testing working in a product of ours - and what I'm seeing isn't making any sense. Clip from the product: from Products.PageTemplates.ZopePageTemplate import manage_addPageTemplate from Products.Sessions.BrowserIdManager import constructBrowserIdManager from Products.Sessions.SessionDataManager import constructSessionDataManager from Products.CookieCrumbler import CookieCrumbler CookieCrumbler is in /var/lib/zope/Products, Sessions and PageTemplates are in /usr/lib/zope/lib/python/Products. How is Zope differentiating between these two "Products"? My own playing around seems to indicate that python can recognise only one of the two directories as a source of modules - and the attempt at building unit tests is running afoul of this, the product can't import CookieCrumbler because /usr/lib/zope/lib/python/Products is getting in the way. But Zope itself is able to deal with this perfectly. Yes, I think you are right with: "higher up in the tree structure of the site" but this is not form IE, it don't works in Netscape 4.75 or 7.0 neither and so... I think the bug is from Zope, don't you think so?! or where is the mistake (I understand the facts but ".../StupidBug" and ".../StupidBug/" points to the same page). Hi Philip I think you should use nuxUserGroups. This zope product form nuxeo organise the users in groups andd you can assign roles to this groups. And for the other logic I whould use DC workflow witch is a workflow product for zope. Look at www.plone.org. Pherhaps plone has many of your ideeas implemented. Spacial the member area for your end users. And in plone you can many things offer to your client without to touch the ZMI. Let me know if you realy plan to develope a coustom ZMI interface. I think it's to much work and the second argument is, it's realy possible to develope a custom interface for ZMI who is "better" for the customer? What's better? I know I don't like the ZMI if I make a presentation by a customer. The twofold purpose of this organization is: 1) to be able to send mail to specific constituencies of users; and 2) to assign permissions to specific constituencies of users. My client wants the application to have it's own custom administrative interface (he does not want the site's administrators to be exposed to ZMI) that will enable the administrators to set permissions for specific groups on specific folders. The permissions that the administrator sees may be simplified versions of the more complex sets of permissions you see through ZMI. For example, for a folder the administrator would only see the permissions "No Access," "Read Only," "Submit File," and "Approve File." It is also important to know that the site is structured as multi-community portal. In other words, members are defined at the level of the portal, and they will have permission to belong to specific communities within the portal. Each community will have the same functionality (content folders, discussions, news, etc.) but the content will be different for each. It seems to me that the simplest way to do this is is to implement a "group" as a role. In other words, what my client is calling a "group" would be the equivalent of a Zope "role." When the administrator adds a new group, he would under the hood be adding a new role. When he adds a user to one or more groups, he would be associating the user with the roles (users need to be able to belong to more than one group at a time). Listing the members of a group and sending mail to them would mean filtering the user objects based on their role (assuming this can be done). As for the simplified permissions, there would need to be a dictionary in a script that correlates each of these simple permissions with one or more of the native Zope permissions. I think the only major problem with my approach stems from the fact that the groups/roles would be different for each comunity -- they would not apply to the entire portal. However, users would still be defined at the portal level because they will have access to multiple communities. Through ZMI, it looks like you can only assign a role to a user if the role has been defined at the same level as the user in the hierarchy or at a containing level in the hierarchy; in this case, I want to be able to assign a role that has been defined at a level below the level at which the user is defined. So my question is: is there a workaround for assigning a role to a user when the role is defined further down in the hierarchy from where the user is, or is there some other way entirely that I should be solving this problem? The Zope Book - a problem with example.

Hi, I'm trying to learn Zope by doing the examples in the Zope book. I'm having a bit of a problem with the example on page 41 and 42. The problem is in the DTML method interestRateDisplay. The error message said I have a bad parameter, but I can find is for the life of me.
