ZClass questions

Hello there, I've read all I could find on customizing Products' ZClasses - the entire "Zope Book", some of another book, searched Zope.org, and I just read through Loren STafford's ZClass Properties howto. I've been working on a ZClass of my own, and I have some questions. The main one is this: I want to control the appearance of one of my ZClass's views, which will be used to update the properties of instances (this will become the main view). I defined a view, defined a method to connect with the view, and I have a property sheet with everything. I'm just not content with the "default" propertysheets/[my thingie]/manage method for displaying the form. I tried just setting my custom form action to this, also, and it sort of works, but after an update, I get "Your changes have been saved" with an "OK" button - and when I click the button, it goes to a default propertysheet management screen - disorienting :) I got the form displaying, all right, and I can update the values - easy. I think my problem is that I don't know either a) what to set the form's action to, b) if I have to write my own method for updating the properties, or c) if I can just somehow call the same method and update the properties if the properties are set. I experimented with approach (c) and wound up clearing all the properties. Is there a document somewhere that will fill in the gaps in my knowledge that this question illuminates? I want to make nice-looking property management interfaces for my ZClasses - and I'll want a good, flexible solution for doing that. If manage_changeProperties(REQUEST=None, **kw) is what I want (maybe in a <dtml-call> tag inside a <dtml-if> tag in my main method), how do I call it most gracefully? Many thanks, Am Thomas

popen hangs on W2K

Hi! popen3() of the python (2.1.2) which comes with zope hangs on W2K: (stdin, stdout, stderr)=popen3('wvWare -x wvware.xml foo.doc') text=stdout.read() --> read never ends. It works if wvware produces few output, but with larger files it hangs (0% CPU usage). wvware is a binary from gnuwin32.sourceforge.net Platform: Windows 2000 SP2 Has someone seen this problem before? thomas

Question about SybaseDA

Ran into something interesting when using the SybaseDA v2... When I try to store a large amount of text in a text field on a MSSQL database, it saves it all intact. However, when I try and retrieve said data, it seems to truncate somewhere around 4065 characters... FSCounter fills up undo log

Hi, I installed FSCounter 1.2 on my Zope 2.3.3 (linux Debian potato). Calling a FSCounter instance via <dtml-var counter> from index_html document fills up the undo log with one entry per request. After a while there are hundrets of these entries in my undo log which lets the data.fs growing up very rapidly. Any ideas? Thanks Marcus

Been following the "state of documentation" thread and I just have to note the irony about a content management system struggling with content management. I do tend to agree that there is a general lack of coordination, editing, verification/review for all the content, but not a general lack of content. At the same time, I understand the "we're not going to do the search for you so go search Google" and the "read The Zope Book" reaction as well. If increased community participation is desired, then some slack must be given before new folks get the "cold water in the face" routine by the hard core community members. Couple of specific requests/suggestions to add to the mix: 1. How about a glossary of terms that get linked to various HOWTOs, wikis, etc. 2. Include appropriate Python, MySQL, Postgres, etc. documentation cross-references. 3. Develop some kind of structure to the various types of documentation (to provide cross referencing, understanding how current, what version(s) is applies to, etc.). 4. Develop a peer review and reward system (Joel's suggestion extended) that provides recognition which may lead to paid work. 5. Develop an overall structure to the "master" documentation and solicit content owners/maintainers (subject to peer review of course). Books, member areas, etc. can still be used to augment the master documentation. 6. Good examples are key to understanding concepts I think, so require them to post. I think Joel Burton, Jean-Francois Doyon, etc. both have very good points on how to go about improving the situation. I would be willing to volunteer some time to help search, review, catalog, comment on, etc. from a novice perspective. It would also be nice to see a dedicated (at least part-time) resource from ZC to keep us honest as well. Anyone out there a professional information architect to help get us moving in the right direction (see http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1565922824/ref=ase_louisrosenfel-20/1 04-8373055-5213557 for a good book on the subject - disclaimer: I know Lou Rosenfeld)? As for the related issue on difficulty installing, building, configuring, etc. on various platforms, I would suggest separating this from the documentation topic (although it should be well documented too). Easy DTML way for layout.

Hello, I ran into a problem with Zope. I'd like to use it to create a consistent layout for a midsize webpage. The layout is very simple; I'd like Zope to insert the same header, body and footer for all pages with minor color differences that can be handled by CSS. The header will contain a tool bar--for example, a simple table with links in it. Then my standard_html_footer or whatever I choose my DTML footer tag to be will look like this: <dtml-var css-code> <dtml-var toolbar-code> This is where I have a difficulty; what if I want my toolbar to have a minor difference from every page? For example, what if when page 1 is visited, I'd like the page 1 link to be in bold? I could make a ton of different dtml-vars for each part of the toolbar but that would take a ridiculous amount of time, if it works at all, and defeat the whole purpose of using Zope for the easier layout. I'm sure there's a "standard" solution to this--how can I achieve such easy consistent layout in Zope? Thanks a lot, -- Jordan Katz <katz(a)underlevel.net> | Mind the gap

Your browser can (and usually will) send this login information with any request to the Zope site. When it does, CookieCrumber is no longer able to log you out. An "Unauthorized" response is also send to the browser in some exceptional error situations. You get a browser login dialog and when you successfully provide login information, then you are authenticated with HTTP authentication and CookieCrumbler can no longer log you out. This is probably a bug. But it occurs only rarely and is probably not your problem. Some browsers allow you to save login information accross sessions. Such browsers may automatically authenticate you without being asked for it. In these cases, you are authenticated via HTTP authentication and CookieCrumber cannot log you out. Dieter
