Hello all: I'm trying to configure Zope with Apache in Suse 7.3. This distribution comes with all prepared to run Zope + Apache. But I get some problem: I use the next entry in httpd.conf: RewriteEngine on # Keep users' home dirs handled by Apache <IfDefine ZopeKeepHomes> RewriteRule ^/~(.*) /~$1 [l,pt] </IfDefine> # and finally Zope redirection <Directory /opt/zope/> Options +ExecCGI Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> RewriteCond %{HTTP:Authorization} ^(.*) RewriteRule ^(.*) /opt/zope/Zope.cgi$1 [e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%1,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l] But when i try to access zope, www.mydomain.com/manage Apache search this url in /usr/local/httpd/htdocs ... I'm trying to make some nice (fancy) screens so that my users can edit DTML Documents without using the standard management interface. For testing purposes, I created a DTML document with a string property entitled "new_prop". I've checked Google, and there are some nice examples when you are modifying values in a mySQL table, but nothing for when you are "hand" modifying properties in DTML Documents. I think you are on the right track in conceptualizing this; Zope does a very good job in making it easier to break things up into easily digestible small (generally) single-purpose components. Everything is an object in Zope, including granularly small single-purpose software components (like ZSQL methods and the database adapter objects they use, or python scripts, page templates, or user folders) that you place/arrange inside container objects (folders). You may want to strongly consider using Zope Page Templates (ZPT) instead of DTML; they are documented well in the 2.5 (online) version of the Zope Book. They keep code, generally speaking, out of the presentation, and even allow you to have designers create mockup that gets stripped at runtime. You'll get much better editor possibilities if you use ZPT because it won't break syntax highlighting in most text-based HTML editors, and will work with WYSIWYG editors without breaking layout. In your case, make your design, including some made-up mockup example data in the templates using ZPT. Write some scripts or ZSQL methods to get/set relevant values from content stored in the ODB or RDBs respectively. Then write business-logic Python scripts that uses the data (or write to data) and outputs something friendly for calling by a page template, like a sequence/list or a string as a return value. Once you have all of these components in place, use TAL attributes inside the HTML in your ZPT pages to call those middle-tier scripts. This process will get you two things: 1 - the ability to modularize everything into tiers with differing concerns, keeping application code, data-access code, and presentation code separate, and potentially create a useful division of labor. 2 - You can storyboard your application visually in HTML before your code is done (which is one of ZPT's main strengths). Seperate Development ...

Hi ! Using a Windows Server (which I had to do), I have a production zope site that needs to be always online. Unfortunately I am quite a newbie using zope, so I have a question: I would like to setup a second site for development, perhaps with an automatic way to move this site to the production site. Can I just copy the Data.fs ? Do I need to stop the service before and restart it afterwards or could this even be done "on the fly" ? Bernd

If you use FCGI with Apache, then I don't think there is much of a slow down, but of course there is the small overhead of actually running Apache. The main benefit of Apache is to provide many Virtual Hosts, so your single Zope server can be all of www.abc.com, www.def.com, www.xyz.com, etc. Thsi is achieved using the Virtual Host Monster and Proxy pass in Apache. Form Based Document Creation (Newbie)

Hello, I am brand new to Zope, and have a task-oriented type of question. I'd like recommendations for the best way to do what I'd like to do. What I'd like to do is: Create a variety of different forms which create Zope documents. The forms would have different fields for different types of documents (though they would all have certain fields in common, such as author name... most of the fields would be displayed as part of the document body) I've not been able to figure out what is the proper Zope way to do this... Populate a variable associated with each doc for "expected expiration release" (because I want to be able to find all docs which are either older than a certain age based on creation date, or which expire with the current release of our production software, and then assign them to someone's todo list to edit them) Indeed, what I think I really want is to modify numerous copies of the master template for adding a document so that documentors can just add content and pick from a list of document types. However, I couldn't really figure out if I was going to keep the maximum amount of residual sanity if I did this by modifying all the templates by-hand, or doing something more automatic with Zclasses, or packages, or if I need to use the CMF or what... I could just hack stuff in Perl CGI and MySQL to do this, but if I learn the Zope way I'll become a better person, right? :-) I'd like to create applications to act on these documents, and a whole lot more, but for starters I figure I need to figure out how to make these forms and start inputting docs that have the right structure to support my apps. Cache by InterSystems vs. Zope (OT)

I ran into this site for Cache www.intersystems.com which seems to have a fast database with object and SQL access to the data, and an app server with some similarities to Zope on the surface. Not really interested in the app server as it isn't open source, but the database sounds fast. Anyone used this or seen it? - Robert

ZPT idiom

Speaking of idiom: which do people feel is better: <input name="test" tal:attributes="value request/foo"> or <input name="test" value="dummy" tal:attributes="value request/foo"> That is, should the value= tag be given when it is going to be replaced by a tal? (Both forms work, I am concerned about readability and pedagogy.) What about <input type=checkbox name=test2 tal:attributes="checked request/foo | nothing"> vs. <input type=checkbox name=test2 checked tal:attributes="checked request/foo | nothing"> Again, both forms have been tested, does the latter form help or hinder readability?
