Why not Zope's XML-RPC instead of .Net?

Hello, I need some marketing advice - pointers to articles, articulations, random thoughts, web log entries etc... We would like to use Zope a lot (and we use it quite a lot too). Now, there has been so much marketing fury to turn everything into .Net based services (blah blah, you get IDE, you get "standard" way to make web services - yeah, in tons of languages you want, interoperable etc...). Personally, I think developing in Python and making web applications in Zope with its inherent XML-RPC interface is a big win. ie, Developers think ahead, make a web site (like logic in Py scripts and display using ZPT) and then document the logic scripts which can be used by other applications over XML-RPC. No need to write anything else to make it "web service enabled". It is also my belief that light weight desktop applications that store data locally and then sync it to a central web server (like Radio UL) will be the future, especially for intranets with employees travelling half the time. Does any one know of any existing document out there that can support my claim to higher-ups? Like XML-RPC, is there any plan to provide SOAP interface easily? Any hints are welcome... Help with DCOracle2.1 build on AIX

Dear Sir/Madam, I downloaded the DCOracle2-1.1-tar.gz from your site. I intended to compile it on an AIX Unix box with Oracle 8.1.7. The first problem was: 455 0 cutlass fdev /ifadev/Python2.2.1/DCOracle2.1/DCOracle2>make (cd src; ./testora python) /ifadev/Python2.2.1/DCOracle2.1/DCOracle2/src -n Checking ORACLE_HOME... passed. -n Checking for Oracle version... failed. /oracle/app/oracle/product/8.1.7/lib/libclntsh.so not readable; unable to determine your oracle version. make: 1254-004 The error code from the last command is 2. because the libcIntsh.so does not exist in the lib directory (it does for 8.0.5) but rather libcIntsh.a Attached is the results of 'nm /oracle/app/oracle/product/8.1.7/lib/libclntsh.a | grep OCI'. Stop. So I changed src/testora to assume Oracle 8i. Again the compile fell over with the same error. Note that $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/demo/*.h does exist. Also we build (compile and link) C/C++ programs on this Unix box (using the OCI libraries). Could you please advise me what to do? The target environment will be AIX with Oracle 8.1.7. I am also trying to build the Python 2.2.1 release (I used to work with 1.5.2). Yours sincerely Chris Matthews South Africa.

WACK Book question/errata?

I'm trying to use the example (Chap 3, pgs.64-65) with a Postgres db. The gadfly example didn't work either. The problem seems to be with the forms. addNewRecordForm_html result_html I followed all examples to the letter. I can create tables, insert records etc w/ SQL statements for both Gadfly and Postgres. Is there something I'm missing? Eric Dunn

Death to ZClasses!!! ==================== By Max M. 28-05-2002 10:42 I have used Zope for a few years by now and have developed both in zClasses and Python products. While zClasses seems nice when you start out, you will soon be bitten by their subtleties. So you save a little time by not doing a Python product at the beginning, but soon you loose that time, and more as you struggle with the zClasses. I have written this document to help other people see why zClasses are "A Bad Thing". I think that way to much effort is wasted in documentation and development using zClasses. If all that energy had been focused on Python products, Zope would be much easier to use and program for everybody. so DEATH TO ZCLASSES! ;-) It is hard to change the base classes with ZClasses --------------------------------------------------- Sometimes you make a mistake, or you forget to include a base class when writing a product. So you want the ability to add them later. The order in which you subclass classes matters. Sometimes you do it wrong, and you want to change it. zClasses makes this difficult. Example:: class myFolder(SimpleItem, ObjectManager): "This won't work as SimpleItem has a method called ObjectValues that allways returns an empty tuple" class myFolder(ObjectManager, SimpleItem): "This is The Right Way as the it will call ObjetManager.ObjectValues() so yuu get the expected result" Ok you made the mistake. Now try and fix it ! Subtle changes when changing meta type -------------------------------------- If you change the meta type of a zClass you have to also change the add List name, in the zClass' factory to be able to add instances through the Zmi. That is at least when you have a Python Based ObjectManager class that uses the ZMI. It also breaks the ability to cut/copy/paste/rename those zClass objects It also makes the little + dissapear in the tree view so you cannot expand the Objectmanager based zClasses. Makes it harder to learn what Zope actually do ---------------------------------------------- When you write Python product everything is much more transparent, and there are fewer subtle effect that surprise you and make you wast hours debugging. You are more prone to do it the right way when writing Products and put login into Python and not the dtml. Simply because it is easier to do. It's also hard to document how to make zClass based products as you have to use a lot of screenshots or animations instead of text. Code for one class spread over several locations stops you from thinking clear ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ It as if you wrote Python code with all of your methods in different files. And as it is common knowledge the number of errors rises exponentially with the amount of code you cannot see. It can make class seem much bigger and more complicated than it really is if you cannot see all the code. Having products with parts of the code in External methods, other as dtml-files, python scripts etc. in the Zmi is a real drag! It seems so simple to begin with, but as the product starts to grow, it is so tiring. Programming through a web browser sucks! It slows down development considderably. Using ftp in the editor doesn't help much. A hassle to upgrade on remote servers ------------------------------------- With products you just upload via ftp, and perhaps run a script to find all instances and add new attributes. With zClasses keeping a development and production server in sync is hard to difficult. There is a whole lot of software writte to work around the flaws of using and uprading zClasses. That should be a hint that somethings wrong. Other reasons that other people has reported -------------------------------------------- There is a subtle bug in the ZClass registry code that can cause instances to refer to an older class definition. Makes it hard to use straight up Python code, have to use external methods, Working from Python gives you MUCH more power Copy & paste programming does not work with ZClasses. So it's harder to start new projects. Debugging Python code is easier than debugging ZClasses. You can use CVS for the code ZClasses behave "strange" with regard to nested acquisition. ZClasses are relatively slow, especially if you use other ZClasses as base classes of ZClasses If you have anything to add and/or correct. Please mail it to me at maxm(a)mxm.dk regards Max M

ImplicitAcquirerWrapper

Hi all, I encountered a problem when trying to generate thumbnails from large images. My code is based on a chunk from zopelabs: def makeThumbnail(self, imagename, width, height): # get the original large image oriImage = getattr(self, imagename) # convert it to a file oriFile = cStringIO.StringIO(oriImage.data) ... etcetera It seems that oriImage.data is of <type 'string'> when a small image is passed, which is good. When a large image is used, the type of oriImage.data changes to <extension class Acquisition.ImplicitAcquirerWrapper>... Is this a memoryproblem? Or even a memorybug? What is this Acquisition.ImplicitAcquirerWrapper class? I use Zope 2.3.3 on Redhat 7.1. Appreciate any advice... TIA, Antwan. Big Folder Problem?

I spent some time today reading over the future of Zope stuff. I ran across a mention of a Big Folder Problem. Can someone tell me where the limit is? If I create a folder with, say, 1000 DTML documents in it, am I going to be OK (crazy, but I mean otherwise)?

[HELP] ZServer Log file format

Hello, In my compagny, whe use a software named "WebTrends" in order to analyse the activity of our sites (Zope and no Zope sites). It seems that Webtrends has some difficulties in analysing the HTTP log file of Zope. I didn't manage to find out where is specified the format of the HTTP log file. I would like to know the differencies vs the standard Apache access log file, or a way to know the format of Zope log file ? Can anyone help me ? Thanks in advance P.S : Excuse my english. Fred.

Jean, I am intested, because I was just planning to use fsrecover.py taking it from 2.5.1 and putting it into 2.4.3 (the same as you). I have copied fsrecover.py (2.5.1) to fsrecover2.py in 2.4.3. Well, it seems to work, and a "top programmer" (in zope-dev mail-list) told me that it should work. So, do you think the problems comes from an incompatilibility of fsrecover.py with Zope 2.4.3, or is because your database was really damaged and fsrecover has done the "well" the work ?? Thanks !!
