Sigh. That's sort of where I am. I miss the power and simplicity of Smalltalk. I could even *choose* Smalltalk because I'm in complete charge of those decisions. But when the finished app has to work over the Internet, requires a remote object store, and needs to be deliverable in small enough chunks that dial-up users can use it, Smalltalk disappears as an option. I spent a LONG time looking at options before settling on Zope and I'm loath to give up on it. But programming in this environment is reminiscent of some of the labor-of-love languages and tools I used over the years that were always a bit short of commercial success and viability. The absence of an IDE for Zope makes the experience of building Zope apps so cumbersome that I feel confident much of the time that all of the time I'm saving coding because of the nice OO environment and the cool built-in ZODB is being lost in the procedural and mechanical details of getting even relatively simple product-type stuff to work. Periodically, I go into a fit of pique and I search to see if there's anything else out there I could use that would be better. There is, but not within the affordable range of my finances, system infrastructure, and time for learning. I guess I shouldn't be surprised but it is starting to make me believe that I should simply abandon the idea of creating real-world Web-based apps and services and just go back into my writing hole, leaving software development to younger, more agile and more patient minds.

Hello everyone, I've been lurking for the past week or so and have read a sizeable chunk of the archives of the mailing list. I should explain that I've got a fair background in Web development (Perl CGI and related stuff, Microsoft ASP/MTS/COM and various J2EE tools), and a reasonable background in Python as well. At the moment, I'm trying to get my head around how the various bits of Zope hang together, and put together a personal list of which bits of Zope to focus on now and which bits to leave till later. Reading through a huge pile of messages, I've formed the following impressions: - ZPT is viewed as "the way of the future". I like the separation between content and presentation aspect, I like the fact that I can use Dreamweaver to create and edit templates, overall I like the concept of ZPT a lot - while DTML isn't going to go away any time soon, there seems to be at least a mindshift away from it at present. Same for ZClasses - consensus seems to be that page rendering using ZPT & TAL is a bit slower than using DTML. This is obviously a generalisation, but appears to be a consistent theme of the messages from several people. I haven't yet seen anything like "it's 30% slower" or "it's 80% slower" yet - there's lots of support for implementing business logic in external Python scripts vs. any other standard Zope options - most people seem to be using Zope for content management sites, as distinct from e.g. e-commerce, app hosting. To me, Zope looks like it should be particularly good for app hosting as it has version control, user-level security and state management out of the box, but I can't recall reading a message from anyone using it for that Here's what I'm struggling to find: - any structured info on using Python to access Zope's internals. I've found lots of code snippets to perform specific tasks (e.g. create a folder), but so far nothing like a "cookbook". Something broadly equivalent to the "DTML to ZPT" page at www.zopelabs.com, or the "METAL for beginners" and "ZPT simple tutorial" pages at www.zope.org, would be great - anything on hosting Java applets or Active/X controls using Zope. Given the amount of non-Zope sites that use this stuff, I'd be very surprised if there's no Zope sites doing the same, but I can't find any info at all - info on relational database performance issues such as connection pooling between sessions. There's a body of (non-Zope) information on how to design efficient database-driven Web sites available on the Net, but I can't find any info on how to implement these designs using Zope - info on why creating a Zope Product, as distinct from a bunch of folders, scripts, templates, etc., is A Good Thing. I suspect I'm missing something obvious here... Can anyone provide pointers to the above info, if it exists? Thanks in advance David Mitchell

Hi, is this the list to ask STX question? Anyway, I've read on http://www.zope.org/Members/millejoh/structuredText that [a12] is interpreted as <a href="#a12">[12]</a> Unfortunately when I look into the pagesource of one of my sites, I see, hat [a12] is interpreted as <a href="#refa12">[12]</a> What's wrong with STX? Have I done anything wrong? I appreciate any help. regards Lars

Permissions, python product, problems

Zope 2.5.1 Sometimes zope is a strange animal. I'm creating a python product, and I've defined some permissions. I want to see if the user has those permissions on an object. Here's the DTML Method: ------------ <dtml-var standard_html_header> hasChange=<dtml-var "_.SecurityGetUser().has_permission('Change Job Entry',_['BJobFolder'])"> hasAdd=<dtml-var "_.SecurityGetUser().has_permission('Add Job Entry',_['BJobFolder'])"> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> ----------- The output seems to show that those permissions aren't found on the folder at all: ----- hasChange=None hasAdd=None ------- But when I add the following line to the DTML Method: <br />permission settings<dtml-var "_['BJobFolder'].permissionsOfRole('Manager')" size=40> I get the following output, which seems to show those permissions were found. Strange exceptions...

Has anyone run into this: I have a Python Script that is calling several ZSQL methods. It then calls another Python Script that sends mail using MailHost. The interesting thing is that I am getting a MySQL unsupported error returned from the MailHost object. All of the ZSQL methods are completing successfully (the records are all inserted into the database) but when I call MailHost.send it throws the exception. If I comment out the call to MailHost.send everything works fine without throwing an exception. Very strange -- anyone have any ideas? Kevin
