I like page templates because they permit uncomplicated cooperation with designers who don't know DTML and/or use drag-and-drop composers. Newbie I am, however, I see a few problems here, and I hope they stem from my ignorance. 1.) Can page templates be "modularized"? DTML is great for assembling pages from re-usable blocks, i.e. dtml_standard_header, dtml_standard_footer. I have not found an equivalent facility for page templates. Is there any? 2.) Symbols How am I supposed to work with symbolic information like table width? Of course, I'm free to create python-functions which pull the raw figures from a config-file or db, but having a separate function for each of the dozens of symbols I would need will give me carpal tunnel syndrome. 3.) Dynamic pages This is a more generic newbie question, since it is not confined to the realms of page templates. Let's say my site sports a uniform layout for hundreds of used-car ads. Each ad gets its own page which content is pulled from a data-base on the fly. This content is wrapped into identical hooks for banner ads, a header, footer and navigation bar. Without Zope one sets up a table of content with a link to each ad; each link calls a cgi-script with some id for the data-base in the QUERY_STRING. This requires the script to assemble the page, send the cgi-ahoy (content-type: text/blabla) and the <html> for the page. Is there a Zope-ish way to do this? I have not even found a way to access a page template from a script for reading. The data for Zope-objects seems to be pickled in files.db. ANNOUNCE: Pound - reverse proxy and load balancer - v0.2

This is to announce the release of Pound v0.2. Changes from previous version: - added HTTP/HTTPS request checking. Pound will only accept well-formed requests, thus protecting the back-end server(s) from malicious clients. I believe that this is now good enough to allow a ZServer to run without an Apache/Squid front-end (though you may still want Squid as a cache manager). - added request logging (can still be turned off with a flag). This means that now there is a central log with the correct client addresses. - fixed a few minor bugs. Many thanks to all the people who responded with suggestions and remarks. A few people asked why not simply use Squid rather than Pound. The answer is mostly a question of taste and philosophy: I believe a load-balancer should do no caching. The load-balancer, by its very nature, may become a bottle-neck for the whole system, and thus should be as light-weight as possible. If your application could really benefit from a front-end cache (which is not always the case) then put the caching proxy on the back-end server - e.g. between Pound and Zope - but allow Pound to run alone on a biggish machine. What is Pound (from the Web page) - a reverse-proxy: it passes requests from client browsers to one or more back-end servers. - a load balancer: it will distribute the requests from the client browsers among several back-end servers, while keeping session information. - an SSL wrapper: Pound will decrypt HTTPS requests from client browsers and pass them as plain HTTP to the back-end browsers. - an HTTP/HTTPS sanitizer: Pound will verify requests for correctness and accept only well-formed ones. Below is a post from a user who needs very similar things I do. I feel I am exactly in the same boat he is. I want to use Zope to develop an Intranet. Our network is Win 2000 based and it's easy to develop with IIS/ASP and then integrate the authentication of your windows users. Since I found Zope, I have fallen in love with it. It's just way to cool! BUT... I cant get the authentication to work with anything but the built in user folders. Right now, my users can simply open a link on our Intranet sites, and my ASP scripts can determine who they are. I then can use this username to insert into a database or other functions, like printing it on the web page. With Zope, I have to maintain another set of users AND they have to enter a username and password to do the same thing I can do in IIS/ASP. I have tried the same things Sean has. I can see the users, but the authentication wont work. I have tried setting up pcgi through IIS, and letting IIS authenticate me. This would be wonderful if it worked. I can see the initial index_html under the server root. But anything else cannot be retrieved. So, if anyone has any help or could point me(and Sean) in the right direction, please do so! Here goes another try. background: I am somewhat familiar with basic zope use and canned product installs with good docs but no guru and not familiar with python I want to: build a zope intranet which checks to see what windows group someone belongs to before they can do certain things- aka only my department users can view and add stuff. be able to allow my department users to use intranet without joining (CMF requires one to join for some things) while blocking other departments- this can be differentiated with windows group memberships What I have done so far: installed jcNTUserFolder-0.2.2 but all I could list was the users on local machine that Zope was installed on (not the domain users or groups) I also tried another product which worked with jcNTUserFolder and that claimed to get NT groups also but it broke my basic zope security because it was replacing files at the root zope level (I guess it hacked the main zope security files) I am running: windows 2000 (with some NT users) zope 2.5.1 CMF 1.3b (i may chuck this though if I cannot get the authentication to work well) Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Catch Unauthorized exception and internal redirect to login DTML doc

I'm using exUserFolder to do cookie-based authentication. When a resource is accessed without authentication, an Unauthorized exception is generated. At present, I have a couple of lines in standard_html_header that do an HTTP redirect to the login form: <META HTTP-EQUIV=Expires CONTENT="<dtml-var "ZopeTime()-1" fmt="%Y-%m-%d">"> <META HTTP-EQUIV=Refresh CONTENT="0; URL=&dtml-URL1;/acl_users/redirectToLogin?destination=&dtml-URL;<dtml-if "REQUEST.has_key('authFailedCode')">&authFailedCode=&dtml-authFailedCode;</dtml-if>"> This does a browser redirect to the login form, but not before the visitor sees the error page. How can I get Zope to do an internal redirect to my login form when an Unauthorized exception is generated? Thanks for any tips or pointers! David Trudgett

copy and paste from pgSQL

Hi! I have a database of categorized links in pgSQL. And I have programmed a folderish produkt, witch shows all links from a special category. Now I can add into this folders other folders of the same type, and can build a tree of categories! Adding some dtml into this folders adds category-specific headers and footers! Very fine! I have to written a management-view of all links in the special category. And now starts the problem. I want to copy and move the links into other categories by buttons similiar to the normal zope copy, cut and paste buttons, using the same clipboard. If you try to paste such links into another folder of the same type, all should work normal, if you paste it into a normal folder, an error should arise! How may I do this? I don't want to create my own clipboard, but I also can't use OFS.CopySupport as parent of my product, because the links aren't stored in zope-db, but CopySupport stores the physical path into the clipboard! radio buttons in forms

Inside a form i have: <dtml-in PersonData> // it returns a list of "codigo" Alta: <input type="radio" name="sel_&dtml-codigo;" value=alta > Baja: <input type="radio" name="sel_&dtml-codigo;" value=baja > </dtml-in> I need to get the value of the variables : sel_&dtml-codigo, I mean sel_1, sel_2,sel_3 and so on, inside the form action method. I was trying something like : <dtml-in PersonData> <dtml-var "sel_&dtml-codigo"> </dtml-in> but it didn´t work. It works only If i put: <dtml-var sel_1> <dtml-var sel_2> <dtml-var sel_3>... but I want to call it from a dtml-in. How can i do this ? entering a folder

How do I go into a folder rather than just call it, ie. the equivalent of cd folderName in DOS I tried, as part of a dtml-in loop: <dtml-call "absolute_url() + '/'+_['sequence-item']"> this calls the folder but does not go into it I want to go into it so that I can set a local role <dtml-call expr="manage_addLocalRoles(_['sequence-item'],['Manager'])"> this line works but is setting the local roles in the parent folder, I want them set in the child folders then I want to back out of it, the equivalent to cd.. I looked in Appendix B under Folder, get, manage but no joy I tried "this(absolute_url() + '/'+_['sequence-item']" and "this('absolute_url() + '/'+_['sequence-item']' "but didn't work - Bill Kerr
