Playing the Devil's Advocate: Why Zope?

Hi, My dad is finally considering rewriting his business applications from VB to the web... and asked me to check out the different tools available. I know a bit about environments like Zope, OpenCMS, am currently checking out VB.Net or "simple" languages like PHP. Could anyone experienced with those tools tell me why I should go for ASP.Net, or even what is the point of prefering more complex environments like Zope over PHP? Any hint much appreciated EvH.

Images through XML-RPC

Anyone know if it is possible to send images, or other file data through xml-rpc? I've been working a lot with the xml-rpc funtionality of zope and it's a lot of fun. I have some seperate python/Tkinter scripts that I'm playing with that all communicate using it. Can I wrap files somehow and work with them in ZODB using xml-rpc? For example, a client has an image on the local machine. Can I make a rpc call to a python method and save it in the zodb as a zope image? I would probably need PIL on both sides? More info for newbies on Zope's Z2.log file

Hello everyone! I finally got Sawmill, a website stats package, (www.sawmill.net) up and running with Zope 2.5.1. FYI: The Z2.log file format is almost Identical to the Apache Combined log file format. There is a subtle difference in some of the separators at the end of the line where the client browser and OS information are located. Sawmill compensatea for this, and its a non issue. TIP: When you first setup sawmill, just set it up to import one log file. It will automatically detect the format. What was blowing my install out was that I had told Sawmill to suck in an entire directory of log files. By reading just the Z2.log file it was able to determine the format. After that, I went back and added the my log archive directory and it was able to bring all of the files in. Live and learn, I hope others find this helpful. -james James Bragg

Zope Tutorial Tool?

Idea mode on: Is there any kind of Zope Tutorial Tool out there? Something for throwing together instructional pages like the Zope Tutorial? Something that could be used for ANY kind of tutorial, slide show, web-based learning, etc. At the very least a more comprehensive tutorial than focusing on Elvis sightings (which is a good tutorial, don't get me wrong) And before you tell me to write one myself, I have to learn Zope and Python first... By then I'll have some good ideas of what to put in a tutorial, but by that time I'll know Zope and everything that's now unclear will become clear, and I'll think "Why bother? That's *basic* stuff." Rant: While I'm on the subject of documentation, it would be nice if every doc standardized on having sections like: What do I do with this? Practical example for the uninitiated. Like, "if you don't understand authentication, look at *this* link." before you even try to use this product. In other words, not only show the *software* dependencies, but show the *knowledge* dependencies. Think how fewer emails you'd get from people like me asking silly questions. What does it look like? Screenshot? (Save me the bother of installing yet another calendar package, trying to figure out how to use it, then seeing that the output is *crap*, and uninstalling and having had to restart the server *twice*.) I *love* product pages that have screenshots or show an image of what the control will look like. and When you have a nice web page with cool widgets/whatnots, tell people how it was implemented in size-2 type or something. Are you afraid I'll steal your design? Hey, that's how I learn! The ZDP comes to mind. How do they do that? Is it mentioned on that page? Nope. No, "this wiki based on wackproductZ and CMF". I see so many nice web layouts and have *no* idea how they were done, what products were used, nada. It's a shame. People learn stuff then take it for granted. Ah, the curse of learning. Xron Problem

Hi. I have been using Xron 0.0.10 inside Zope 251. I have a problem in xrondtml method. It seems that when i schedule a xron event to run at a specific time, it runs but it fails to reschedule itself for the next run. It always fails to rescedule and disarms the xron (time goes to 1970 [datetime(0) not in eventtime + reschedule interval] [the method i call with xron runs correctly]. I use xron in several parts of my code. It works fine in a part of code [it manages correctly to reschedule itself] but when i am trying to trigger it manually i get the message to download it.In other part of code it works only manually an not in the background procedure. Below is a part of the code to help you: I use xron inside a class called AllChannelsFolder. You are an evil evil man... I could have gone further and congectured that some of the problem might be due to the use of windows IE integrated authentication :) >From a bit more investigation the conclusion I've come to is this: WebFolders and Frontpage both use method of WebDav connection that also tries to do WEC (which is the even more evil frontpage extensions stuff). What seems to be happening is that a PROPFIND is requested from the root of the URL. When running IIS with PCGI the root is an IIS controlled folder. IIS in then returning somekind of response that the WEC component likes but unfortunatly says "don't go any further, there is nothing to see", or something like that, so Zope never even gets even one WebDav request. So WebFolders is basically a nasty webdav client that doesn't play nice. Unfortunatly most other solutions seem to cost a lot or require too much from the user, ie better WYSIWYG = dreamweaver = cost or better WebDav = WebDrive = cost, or External Editor = too much effort by end users. Now I was thinking, what if External Editor was made into somekind of unsigned applet or java webstart app? ie, one click, no install. That would be really nice. One click to edit in your own personal WYSIWYG environment is a killer app (and MS gets this with the IE "edit using frontpage" menu item which IMHO gets them a lot of business). my2c.

Simple question from a stupid newbie. I'm used to writing inline code using PHP and I just want a random number to appear on a web page. Once I clear that hurdle, I want to use that number to reference different images (objects, right). Then I'll have a web page that displays random images from my image library. How do I call Python functions from within a web (aka DTML Document?) page in Zope? If you tell me to read the documentation I'll strangle you. :-) It's lacking. Thanks in advance, -Patrick Price
