Zope in intranet - the cool apps?

This is an email to open discussion about development of Zope applications to be used somewhere where they could mean a lot - in intranets, used by people who don't want to use hacker stuff, but do work - more likely do work better than in real life, in just personal contacts with people. Groupware applications - email, PIM, calendar are out of this discussion. That should be a whole discussion of it's own and have connections to possible real calendar servers ( are there? ) and tools that poeple use ( handheld compatible etc.). Other people are allready trying to or have tried to solve these challenges. However I would like to talk and discuss with others about the other applications, the stuff that makes the difference and could be really important for the success of Zope. My favourites. 1. CMF No questions asked. This is the thing that is a great foundation to build on top of. You can count Plone to this section too, since it is just a skin. But CMF is a priority in many people's lists, so I am not worried about that. I just wish it would be bigger and better even faster ,-) One thing that is missing from CMF, is a way to create new content types more easily than ZClasses or Python Products. I mean something like Metapublisher but butter userinterface and all. It would be so great if user could just select the fields they want and create new type and later on even modify it with the same tool. Ofcourse the new type would be made either as a ZClass or python product so that experienced users would be able to extend them easily. That would be - kewl. 2. CMF Wiki / ZWiki ZWiki is taken care of and developed all the time(?), but CMF Wiki is not. For me CMFWiki is great - fantastic, absolutely perfect tool for intranet. Building knowledge has never been faster, and it works inside CMF - great! It would be really great thing, if someone or a group of people - who are comfortable with creating CMF-applications could possibly take over the CMFWiki and work with ZWiki developer Simon to make combine these efforts in a way that development being done with ZWiki could be taken automaticly in use with ZWiki. Just like a wrapper. 3. ZUBB / CMF Forum Threaded discussions - and usamble inside CMF. This is needed. Squishdot or it's possible future reincarnation Swishdot are also a nice thing, but for different purpose I suppose. What I like is a simple - intuitive threaded discussions that people will feel comfortable to use as soon as they see it. We don't need many different discussion applications, we need just one - really good and customizable. 4. Some way to access files in filesystem LocalFS or similar? In intranets this is nice, cool and very good thing to have - since in many cases you will have a big pile of old files somewhere on samba share or otherwise. People want to save and use files in really easy way, in many cases it is through the windows explorer. Or access the files through intranet. Compared to samba share or similar problems are allways the smae. Locking - how to upload files etc. People are not ready to do something more complicated than what they are used to, forexample write metadata to files etc. If it was in windowsexplorer that a popup windows would come up and user would have to type, or user would have the possibility to type the metadata, then it would happen. Maybe. Here is possibly some work to be done in the future. I have a couple of wishes or thougths: 1) There would have to be an easy way to share files when things are still cooking and people just throw files back and forth. Possibly normal network folders ( samba share ) is the best way to do this. 2) Files and folders from local filesystem should be easily copied into Zope system, so that they are created as a full CMF-objects and user has to either type in metadata or metadata is automaticly created. In this sense at this phase the files are like first time published publicly and made available for others. 3) Or everything would be in a cool versioning system that would also automaticly site behind windows explorer extension and objects would be accessed from zope through some interface. Or something else? What else do you have in intranet running and what should be developed? How do you see Zope as an appserver running corporate intranet? ---- While writing this email I've been watching Abyss SE from DVD. problem with ZEO

Ok, I have in mi ZEO_start script this ###zeo_start #!/bin/sh reldir=`dirname $0` exec python $reldir/lib/python/ZEO/start.py -S main=StorageConfig:main_storage -p 8800 -h 10.10.10.2\ ZEO_SERVER_PID=$reldir/var/ZEO_SERVER.pid \ STUPID_LOG_FILE=$reldir/var/ZEO_EVENTS.log \ "$@" my StorageConfig.py : import ZODB.FileStorage main_storage=ZODB.FileStorage.FileStorage('/usr/local/Zope/var/Data.fs') When I start ZEO whit the -S option it sents errors when one of my ZEO clients try to connect. but when I kept out the -S main=StorageConfig:main_storage all my clients starts ok. What is the difference running the zope with or without the -S parameter? The other issue that i have is this i have three pentium working with ZEO thwo clients and one server. The two clients are balanced with a load balancer. When I start my two Clients, it seems like everithing works fine, but when I connect my squids (on both clients machines to accelerate the site) to those ZEOclients, the site hangs a lot, and some times never respond (the browser keeps thinking). And when i disconnected ZEO( my both clients and my Server) and only start Zope as usual (only one instance on the main server) and connect both Squids to that instance the site works fine. Do you have any Idea why this happens? A month a go everithing was workinf fine, last sunday the disck of my Main server (wher the Zserver is) filled up. So what i did ,was remove logs and other unusual files to free some sapce, but when I started the ZEO Server and the clients, the hangs started. So i thought may be some files where corrupted becuase of the disk full. So I made a new installation of Zope with new ZEO (both main server and client machines) thinking that this could solve the problem, but it didnt. Just for the record I copied all the Data.Fs and Data.fs.* of my old installation to the new installation. Is there any possibility that the Data.fs be corrupted because of the disck full? And if so why it works fine whit one Zope and with Zeo dont (remember I use squid to accelerate ZOPE)? Thx Tavo

contrext.REQUEST and hasattr

Trying to use this bit of code in a Python script: if not hasattr(context.REQUEST,'learners') I get a a KeyError for for learners. Am I missing something, because this is exactly what hasattr is supposed to be used for. -- Bryan C. calling a value?

I have a very strange problem, that probably stems from me being new to python I have a script that does this now = DateTime() session_id = now.millis() # write to DB with session_id # set cookie with session_id the problem is that it seems that session_id holds an instance to now.millis(), because the session_id value in the database is a few milliseconds earlier than the session_id value stored in the cookie. It seems to me that referencing session_id *calls* now.millis() and passes that value to the db and cookie methods. Is that possible? Is that what's happening? I just want a long int out of millis() (I tried casting it six ways from sunday too - no luck) -jim

Nice to have feature.

I place the following feature request into the bug/feature/patch collector, but the submission failed. Anyways, I would like to have feed back from users here. It would be nice if path expressions could be the result of an expansion evaluation. If you could have a tag expression as follows: <span tal:replace="structure ${request/middle_section_template}">middle section to be replaced</span> where the value of the path request/middle_section_template is the path (and hence another level of indirection) this feature would make page layout more elegent. Right now I can acheive the same "late template binding" via python script. But the above feature would be nicer and more elegant. For instance if the following code is on my main application template page and I had two middle section templates, one for a corporate application form and one for an individual application form, one of which should be merged depending on a runtime variable of whether the user is applying for his company or for himself: I would like to be able to set, REQUEST.middle_section_template="container/CorporateFormPageTemplate", or set, REQUEST.middle_section_template="container/IndividualFormPageTemplate", depending on whether the user is a corporation or and individual. And then have the evaluation of the expression ${request/middle_section_templage} determine the replacement path. This seems like something easy to do, because in the page template string expression a similar evaluation is taking place.

You should be able to run your clients and your ZEO on different ports on the same IP address, so you don't really need any more than the one IP to make this work. Maybe make one zope run on port 80 and run your debugger on 8080, for instance. Chris muldrow(a)mac.com
