The have some sort of network system that logs in to the machine and fetch all data. An interesting thing in this context is, that the backup is from 02:24 (local time) and the they discovered the problem 02:37. Maybe Zope doesn't like their backup system ?? > 2) export/import your objects tree-wise. What do you mean ? export/import all the objects I can get access without errors ? The problem is that all there newest content is inside the folder where the corrupted object also is so I cannot access the folder at all :-( Does objectsIds() load all the objects ? First my thanks to everyone that responded to my question. I received some very thought provoking responses. I am totally new to object oriented databases; never even saw one before Zope, that I know of. So I think I can be forgiven for being a little stand-offish when it comes to the thought of trusting one with my data. At the same time I can see where an OODB might have some advantages, in certain situations, over a RDBMS. You have all given good arguments for both sides of this question. I think, however, the most appropriate answer was "use the best tool for the job". With that thought in mind I think I'll just have to look at each situation individually and make my decision from there. Thank you everyone for your input. I can tell that some of you put alot of thought into your responses and I really appreciate it very much. You have all been very helpful. Paul

Block Letters

Hi. We are testing an application developed in Zope/ MySQL and occasionally, have reports that text will turn to block letters. I do not know what browser she is using. Here is a quote from on of the users with the problem: "The content areas had blocks in place of some letters. I went on with the planning and when I went back to that page, only letters were showing." So it is intermittent and I have not been able to reproduce it. Zope is 2.6, Linux is Redhat 9, MySQL is 4.09 (i think). Any ideas about what could be going on? I've seen this with Plone, but we are not using Plone. When I run in Python it runs fine, but when I put it on the extension folder of Zope and added the external method in the Zope folder where I need to start the search, this returrn an error that say " Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Error Type: IOError Error Value: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'chr1/CDS.htm'" The external method is in a folder called database, inside that folder are 14 folders called chr1, chr2, chr3 etc..., and inside any folder is a DTML document called CDS.htm. Please help me with this because I don't know what's the problem. [Tom P] The external method uses whatever default path is in effect when it is called. Of course, it is not likely to be the path that you want. You should not try to control that. Instead, you should make sure that your data files are in a location known to the external method. BTW, the external method would best be in the Extensions folder rather than some subfolder. There are several ways to get a known path. Here are some of them - 1) Hard code the path into the code. This is the least desirable approach, because the code will break if you move the installation of the data. But it may serve for testing purposes. 2) Put the path to the data into an environmental variable and read it when your external method starts. This is better than 1), but not that much, since somewhere you have remember to set that environmental variable. 3) Put all your external method code into a folder somewhere outside of the Zope installation, put it onto the Python path, and make it a Python package. Change your external method so that it is just a stub that calls the real code. The code in the package can find out its own location (using the __file__ attribute). Put the data folders in a known location relative to the package (maybe in subfolders), and use os.path methods to construct the paths to the data files based on the __file__ location. I highly recommend 3). With this approach, the code automatically finds its data no matter where the installation or code is moved to. You do not have to remember to do anything to make this happen, it just works automatically. As a byproduct, the Extensions folder remains simple and uncluttered, which is a good thing, especially when you want to update Zope. The thing NOT to do is to change the current path, because you have no idea what other bits of code may rely on the value of that path. They should not, but you best not rely on that "should". PortableHole without absolute dependency or LinkedFolder?

Hi zopistas, I often use Portable Hole, but it depdends on the absolute URL from Zope root, not virtual root. Not problems if you use it in "live" but if you archive them and backed up after while to another folder name than original, it is not possible to import that zexp. running Zope with python -O option

Hi, Is it ok to run Zope with python -O option? e.g. python -O z2.py This will run Zope with optimized bytecode .pyo files instead of .pyc files. How's the performance gain? Any potential problem? Thanks and regards,
