Hi, I've a question about "z3c.zalchemy" : "alchemy:engine" directive make for register a new AlchemyEngineUtility. It's possible to set a name to utility. However, z3c.zalchemy.datamanager.getSession can't catch named AlchemyEngineUtility ! It's a feature or a mistake ? one forget ? Thereof z3c.zalchemy.demo.demo1 can't work ! Regards, Stephane

Hello Zopistas.. a happy Valentine's day to all! Continuing with my spring cleaning theme over at http://zwiki.org/GeneralDiscussion , here are some musings. Like many of you, I'm always wondering where is the most useful place to spend my community hacking time. Sometimes Zwiki seems like the very best place; other times it doesn't. Development pretty much came to a full stop at times last year. So I'm kicking around some ideas. I'm pondering what slows down my Zwiki hacking. First, let me get one thing off my chest: for me, Python is a `blub <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blub>`_! There, I said it. Moving on.. then, there are the usual questions of project and platform maturity, legacy cruft, how many people actually use this thing, what is the benefit, what's the future potential, etc. Don't get me wrong, I expect Python and Zope 2 to keep growing and succeeding for a very long time. And so I guess Zwiki will continue to be used and perhaps grow in user base. At the current rate of development, though, we will not stay competitive with other software or even catch up with our own bug reports. Looking at current code, I am reminded that Zwiki 0.x is mature, built on early zope 2 architecture, and that cleanup continues to be expensive (compared to starting something fresh). Of course, many hands make light work. Imagine ten developers working on Zwiki at once - cleanup expense would no longer be noticeable, we could pretty much do whatever we want. That's not our current reality. Is it possible to find ten Zwiki developers now or in future ? I'm sure I could increase our numbers (from two active) by sustained effort, but how far and how smart a strategy that is I don't know. Another idea which inspired this post is to branch, mothballing 0.x as-is and moving development focus to a Zwiki 2.x where we would do aggressive disruptive cleanup. Say we did that. What would you throw out of Zwiki 0.x ? What would you keep ? This is to air these thoughts, solicit your ideas, and also a kind of ping to gauge support for the project circa 2008, I guess. When to use a relational database

Hi everyone, Apologies if this is a dumb question, I have had a good look through the archives and on the web. My question is basically about how to design a website. I really like the ease with which you can build applications in zope but I often see comments implying that in order to scale well one may want to use a backend relational datbase. I have also seen several comments to the effect that one should keep the state of a user session out of the ZODB. I am slightly confused by this, I can't find any information which would help me decide what data would be better off in a relational database. Example, to learn my way around zope I am deesigning a simple blogging application which allows people to log into the site and see blogs they have subscribed too. I would represent the blog posts as a series of ZPT documents. Two questions, is it better to represent the blog posts as objects in the database or as records in an external relational database? And as regards users, should I use Zope's userfolders for authentication or an external database of usernames and passwords? Again I apologize if this is a ridiculous question and if someone can point me in the direction of some good resources about the overall design of a zope site that would be very helpful. rename meta_type

Hello, I have a product in use on many of my client sites. I'd like to rename the meta_type of one of the classes, but I notice that when I do, the pre-existing objects retain their old meta_type. Is there a way for me to force a zope object to "reset" itself according to a modified class definition? Thanks in advance, David

ZODB & Zope 2.8 ZRDB/TM : "raise" + "except: pass"

Hi. I triggered a bad behaviour in Zope 2.8 Transaction class: try: <do something> <commit> <- raises conflict error from ZODB's tpc_vote except: <cleanup> raise Here, <cleanup> uses a transaction-registered connection which is not used before, hence not registered to transaction manager. So that connection tries to register by calling Shared/DC/ZRDB/TM.py:TP._register. Which ends up calling "join" on a status = Status.COMMITFAILED transaction, which raises TransactionFailedError in _prior_operation_failed. Note that before raising, Transaction.register did adapter.objects.append(obj) The raise is caught in TM._register, which prevents it from setting self._registered = 1 A second use of the connection will cause TM to call Transaction.register again because if not self._registered: evaluates to True. But this time, Transaction.register will not raise, since if adapter is None: now evaluates to False. As it does not raise, TM will set self._registered = 1 So now there is a connection which is set as registered, but which will not be commited nor aborted by transaction. Worse, as TM checks self._registered before registering to transaction, the connection will never be registered again. -- Vincent Pelletier

Character display issues upgrading 2.8.8 to 2.9.8

Aloha, I am in the process of moving from zope 2.8.8 to zope 2.9.8 (running on debian 4.0). I am transferring individual zope sites from 2.8.8 instance to 2.9.8 instance via export/import. So far everything is fine except... I have some content in StructuredDocument objects that includes text with some accented French characters, and some of the curly quotes (the 6--9 quotes) and "real" apostrophes and that sort of thing. They are not displaying correctly in the 2.9.8 zope - they show up as whatever symbol the browser uses to say "oops, can't display this correctly." Both zopes are running on my dev system and I'm looking with all the same browsers so it seems it must be something to do with zope handling the characters (or not). The zope.conf settings for default-zpublisher-encoding are left at the default (iso-8859-15) in both instances, if that is relevant. I've never had any problem like this before, such as in previous upgrades of 2.7.x to 2.8.x. I don't even know where to look, aside from the zope.conf setting above which is the same in both cases. Any ideas why this is happening?
