Memory leak
by Mark Thomas 08 Feb '03

08 Feb '03

I'm having some pretty severe problems with memory leaks, where the memory usage on my server is growing rapidly, then crashing Zope (every 2 days or so). When Zope crashes, it often restarts itself which isn't too bad if this was all that is required to get all services up and running again. However, I have to manually re-create a 'transient object container' in the temp_folder every time Zope is restarted. Also, when Zope goes down (or the memory is all taken up) it often takes out other services which don't automatically restart, such as ssh, telnet, mail etc. Obviously, the real answer is to stop the memory leak in the first place, so that Zope never has to be restarted. I'm running Python 2.1.3 and Zope 2.6.0 and I've read and followed much of the advice given on this mailing list re: memory leaks. For instance, I've set ZOPE_SECURITY_POLICY=3DPYTHON in my Zope startup script and checked the reference counts for various things, but can't spot anything that might be a problem. I also saw a 'memory leak possible solved' message which talked about indexing catalogs as being a problem. However, this didn't solve my problem. In my python scripts I often use request.set and session.set commands, and I read that they may be causing problems. I use these functions to pass variables between python scripts and dtml methods or other python scripts. I sort of understand why using these functions may be a problem - because there is nothing to clean them up once sessions are closed? What is the better way to pass variables around? Any help would be greatly appreciated, the mailing list seems to be running out of ideas on this topic. Thanks in advance.

Do you know Google? It will help you in many similar circumstances.... For the current circumstance, you can look at: <http://www.dieter.handshake.de/pyprojects/zope> > does this product allows the cmf to > use a folder outside the portal as member-folder? > the users of the portal are defined in the root folder of zope because my > company wants to store the data of each "member" outside the port. In principle, it does. However, you may need some fiddling with CMF specific roles and permissions. It is quite likely, that you must define the CMF roles sufficiently up in the hierarchy such that they are known in your members folder. (Of course, this assumes, the roles-permission mapping needs no change across portals (in case you have several sharing on "Members" folder)). In case, the "Members" folder can be acquired and has name "Members", it might be sufficient to just delete the "Members" in your portal (this would mean, you do not need an additional product). Dieter PS: Please stay on the list.

Persisting PIL.Image instances in Zope?
by Michael R. Bernstein 08 Feb '03

08 Feb '03

For a number of reasons, I find myself wanting to persist instances of PIL.Image in the ZODB. Ideally, such a subclass of PIL.Image and Persistent would also be API-compatible with OFS.Image, but I'd be willing to live without this. Does anyone already have something like this developed with the bugs worked out? I'd rather not reinvent this particular wheel if I don't have to. -- Michael R. Bernstein <webmaven(a)lvcm.com>

Newbie: Creating PDF Documents on the fly in Zope
by Ashley Lloyd 08 Feb '03

08 Feb '03

I have a few pages in Zope generating info gained from an Interbase DB. The pages are fine, except we also want a user to be able to click a button on these pages and generate a PDF document for printing, looking pretty much the same but with all the necessary page breaks and associated headers/footers. I have looked around, and there are a couple of products that look promising, mostly so PIDDLE. Being a complete newbie to Zope, though, I really don't know where to start with it. I read that SPING was a product designed for such things, and extracted that into products. It appears as a product in Zope, but it is basically empty. There don't appear to be any documents designed for idiots, so I'm hoping someone out there can help me .. ?!? Info on the Zope version I'm running: Zope Version (Zope 2.5.1 (binary release, python 2.1, win32-x86), python 2.1.3, win32) Python Version 2.1.3 (#35, Apr 8 2002, 17:47:50) [MSC 32 bit (Intel)] System Platform win32 TIA Ashley _________________________________________________________________ Use MSN Messenger to send music and pics to your friends http://messenger.msn.co.uk

RE: [Zope] Upgrading to 2.6.0 on SuSE 7.3
by Maszerowski, Thomas 07 Feb '03

I don't seem to be able to get any version to run. It's not clear how to build and install Zope from either the prebuilt tarball or the source tarball. All I want to do is have a /usr/local/zope installation, I suspect it's possible from the source, but it's not clear how to do so. The doc/INSTALL.txt is kind of cryptic. \ Is this even the right list for this? Sorry for all the questions but I'm getting frustrated. Thanks. You will also be required to install python 2.1.3. This is not optional as zope 2.6.x will crash with python 2.1.2. You will find it best to install python 2.1.3 and zope 2.6.x in new directories leaving your current insallation alone so that you can go back to your original configuration in the event something goes wrong during you migration. hth, Mike > > > --On Freitag, 7. Please keep the discussion on the list... Your idea sounds for me like: Why do you want to use Zope if you want to invent the wheel on your own? ZCatalog/TextIndexNG are well tested and do their job very well... There's no need to invent your own c++-indexer, if you do it the "zopish" way. Maybe you should have a look at MNOGoSearch and something like this non-zope-stuff for full-text-retrieval out there... -mj

Upgrading to 2.6.0 on SuSE 7.3
by Maszerowski, Thomas 07 Feb '03

07 Feb '03

I'm running Zope 2.4.1 on SuSE 7.3, installed via RPM. SuSE sees fit to put Zope into /opt/zope rather than in the /usr/local hierarchy. I tried, unsuccessfully, to upgrade via the standard tarballs but I ended up with a mess that required me to blow the whole thing away and start over from scratch. Is there anyone who's built usable RPM's for SuSE or it there a documented way to do so? Thanks. Tom. Tom Maszerowski Xerox Innovation Group/Xerox Engineering Center TMaszerowski(a)crt.xerox.com

passing a list to per external method
by chris 07 Feb '03

07 Feb '03

What is the syntax for passing a list to a perl external method? Can it even be done? Every time I try, the perl method just gets the literal list (['element1','element2'], etc...) as the first parameter. I would think there is a way to do this, since you can do the opposite by having perl return a reference to a hash.
