Creating a file in the filesystem?
by j2 04 Mar '02

I would like to create a semaphore file in the filesystem (/tmp/restart maybe?) and then poll that file from a cron job to see if a certain daemon should be restarted. But, how on earth do one create such an object?

Re: [Zope] Users more information

Hi Antonio I'm having the same problem. I don't want to switch to one of the cookie-based products but would like to save the last login time. I have an additional object per user but whenever a value in an object changes it makes a copy for undo. This'll blast your Data.fs pretty soon. Other options are a flatfile which is accessed py a Python-script or a Database like MySQL (looks a little like overkill ;) ). At the moment I preffer the flatfile (like some pagecounters for Zope) but I'm still pondering over how to improve on performance... Maybe somebody has such a Pythonscript already?? ZMySQLDA 2.0.8 and MySQL-python-0.9.0
by sbergmann＠weblog.de 04 Mar '02

Hi! Does somebody know if it´s possible to change the default values for the "Advanced Options" in ZMySQLDA? The Default is "Maximum rows to retrieve: 1000" "Maximum results to cache: 100". If I have a big table and want to select more then 1000 rows I always have to change the value after creating a new ZSQLMethod. When I forget these the results are not valid. I tried to to find the Values in the sourcecode but didn´t find. Bye Steffen

Barnes & Nobles Putting Zope Books in the wrong place! !!!!!
by James Johnson 04 Mar '02

04 Mar '02

I tend to agree, but sometimes mistakes work out to be blessings in disguise. As a network professional it's been nearly impossible to convince some other professionals the merits of Zope. Now as the original poster said. "The Web app section is huge" The networking professional is overwhelmed with so many choices. I'm asking the community is that not sweet marketing? I bet you more professionals will look at the book if it's the only Web app server in the networking section. Let's not get lost in the sea of "Web Application" marketing power-houses. While zope is an application server. It can also be called a networking system, because I can use it to connect people and resources together. My main point is I don't think they have enough money at DC to pay B&N for such exclusive placement. If you can't find Zope in any section you can always ask for help finding the right section. What we want are the people who never heard of Zope but maybe "Web Application". If I had a choice it would be both sections, but if I had to choose it would be the networking section.... Somebody wants it noticed! With this knowledge I think we stand an even better chance targeting the network professional on the merits and usage of Zope. Developers are important, but zope needs to make more headway with networking professionals. This might be the perfect time to illustrate the main differences between Zope and other "Web App Servers" That's why its confusing and should belong in both sections ;-) Imho, -James p.s. I know at first it seems wrong to leave an Web application product out of that section if you can't have both sections. My thoughts are that a developer will eventually find the software and tools needed to get the job done. The network pro may not ever look at the same section. but if each and every network pro is exposed to Zope when they are seeking knowledge in their profession, that is power just in being able to hear one say "I've heard of it". That's exactly some of the things I've been dreaming of to happen. > In retail, product placement is often key to whether or not something > is sold; this should interest authors and publishers. mixing python and DTML is hellish!
by Roy Mathew 04 Mar '02

04 Mar '02

Folks, I have been trying out Zope, and am now getting beyond the trivial. I do have a question about python vs DTML. What I am finding is that mixing and matching python scripts and DTML (methods and documents) is rather hellish/confusing. For example: o descending into python and then back up to DTML is hard, when you are trying to use acquisition. The python code does not understand contexts and acquisition in quite the same way as DTML. o I am trying to use the SQL Session object from within a python script, and am having all kinds of difficulty. I am starting to believe that it is cleaner (although not as powerful) to use DTML exclusively (and python only for that which is impossible in DTML). This' kind of saddens me as the "Zope Book" suggests that python is highly interchangeable with, and more powerful than DTML. Am I totally off base? Is there some valuable reading that I have missed? How do experienced ZOPErs view this issue? Roy.
