Re: [Zope] Zope 2.5 upgrade help!
by Gilles 03 Feb '02

Yes they are on the same port. BUT I don't want to run both instances at the same time. I just want to run the new OR the old one. The problem is that: 1) from the windows service control panel, stating the 2.5 service give a error: 'Could not start service Zope blabla..) BUT it start zope correctly, just this service status info stay empty. Consequence: from the same control panel I can not stop the service. 2) when I connect to localhost:8080/manage and restart zope, it does not restart. Except thoses start/stop problems everithing is ok. Note: I can start zope 2.5 from a command line, it's ok. But when I connect to localhost:8080/manage ->control panel, there is no restart button. But I think it's normal, probably some not detached from terminal or daemon stuff... Newbie Questions
by Gary Learned 03 Feb '02

03 Feb '02

Ok, I've just read the New Riders Zope Web Application Development & Content Management book, and I've got some questions I hope some kind soul out there will help me with. From what I can see, Zope is just what I've been wishing for. I only hope I have enough brain cells left to learn these 'new tricks'. 1. I have Zope installed in a Windows XP environment. Is it possible to move the data.fs file to a location other than the program executable 'var' directory. Our executables are under a different backup schedule than data files. My other option would be to move the entire zope directory over to a data drive. 2. In the book, it mentions that Zope Templates have to be total and complete html documents. If I want to create separate items like banners and navbars that will get sucked into all pages, I assume that means they have to be methods that are somehow included into a template? In other words, you can't have a portion of a page defined as a template as I understand this. 3. The book talks about creating a zope on a particular port. Does this mean that I have multiple zope services running, or is it possible to have a single service monitor multiple ports? 4. In the application case study, the book said that experience has shown that it's best to have a folder at the root before the top level folder of your site, as follows: / (root) Top/ Top Level Folder SiteRoot/ (Actual Site Root Folder) Can someone explain the value of that one additional folder layer? I'm not seeing it yet and I'm pretty sure it's just because I am missing something.

Python And Zope Job Market
by lozinski＠jobmart.com 02 Feb '02

02 Feb '02

I just completed the software for the python and zope job market (in Zope of course!) and will be exhibiting at the Python10 conference next week. If you would like lots of people at the conference to see your resume, I invite you to register in the database, in time for the trade show. Your registering in the database would be a great help, because you would be Beta Testing the software, and I would have some Zope resumes to show at the Python Trade show. You can see how resumes are displayed at www.jobmart.com/PythonAndZope/Resumes You can register your resume at: www.jobmart.com/PythonAndZope/Register Already 20 people registered using an earlier incarnation of the software. So it is reasonably mature with great error testing. The only part that causes the software problems are the different browsers! So, on the registration page, I created a little test script to make sure it works on your browser! You can run that before entering your real data. I invite you to register, and please send me an email saying how it went, and which browser you used. Regards Chris 1-510-795-6086 lozinski(a)openstepnews.com lozinski(a)jobmart.com

Re : Zope on solaris for the beginner.

Hello Jesse, Maybe this is your first problem on Solaris...... But it won't be the last : 3 months ago, like U, i choose Zope for building few Intranet/Extranet sites on Solaris.... .... but Python's multithreading implementation doesn't work on Solaris. Zope seems to work in a mono-threading mode on Solaris : the problem is still present on Python 2.1.2, maybe it's solved on Python 2.2 (but i'm not sure). But Zope doesn't work with Python 2.2.... .... so we had to install our sites on NT Servers in order to work with Zope (we don't have others Unix systems for production sites in our compagny)...... :-( Zope on Solaris is still a bad choise and i wonder why doesn't it mentionned on Zope.org, i wonder..... ???????? Excuse my English... >________________________________________________________________________ >________________________________________________________________________ > >Message: 8 > Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2002 16:09:58 -0500 > From: "jesse wright" <jesse.wright(a)cameraplanet.com> >Subject: Zope on solaris for the beginner. > >This is very humble-ing. >Hopefully someone is a salvation waiting to happen. > >I'm new to Zope and could really use a little help installing. >I'm on a Solaris Box. > >I've Downloaded Zope-2.5.0-solaris-2.6-sparc >./install -u root > >all looks good > >Next I try to >./start -u root >All goes well until the install seems to get hung up on >Unix socket: /path to Zope-2.5.0/var/pcgi > >When I try to >./start (with no other options) > >I get: >File /path to Zope/zy.py, line 688, in? >IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/path to Zope/var/Z2.pid' > >I imagine this time the error comes from not starting as root. >That and the fact that this file does not seem t be in the "var" folder. > >basically i can't bet to >mymachine.com:8080/manage >So I haven't got this up and running yet. > >I would greatly appreciate any Advice on this. > >Thank you in Advance, >jESSE > >Tell Your Story to the World >Make A Difference - Make TV >www.cameraplanet.com >Expose Yourself >

dtml-var zope_quick_start
by Terence Ng 02 Feb '02

02 Feb '02

Hi! After I installed Zope, and looked in index_html, it shows: <dtml-var standard_html_header><dtml-var zope_quick_start> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> I can find standard_html_header and standard_html_footer, but not zope_quick_start. And I cannot find it in other folders. How can it directs the URL to /QuickStart. How can I use this method to direct the URL to /abc for example? So, people can reach my site by typing "http://mysite.com/" rather than "http://mysite.com/abc". Best regards, Terence Ng _________________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi, I'd like my object has a method that will return its local roles programmatically. Is there any hook in Zope for such purpose? Cheers Dirksen __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Great stuff seeking new owners in Yahoo! Auctions! http://auctions.yahoo.com

Image's modified-date changes just by viewing?
by Arian de Wit 02 Feb '02

02 Feb '02

Hi All, Either I am going completely insane or this is fairly obscure and I'm just going blind... I have some images in a folder, for which I use a "view" DTML method to display them inside a framework, calling them thusly: /folder/blah.gif/view The view method uses dtml-in to produce a list of links to other images in the same folder: <dtml-in expr="objectValues(['Image'])" sort="bobobase_modification_time()"> When I view an image using this method, the "Last Modified" date/time of that image is updated as a side-effect (or what I think is a side- effect). Can someone set me straight on this please? I must be doing something screwy, right? ZSyncer patches for reverse sync?
by Terry Hancock 02 Feb '02

02 Feb '02

I've recently tried out ZSyncer, which seems to be pretty neat. It is missing one feature which would seem to be pretty nice, and I'm told there's a patch to do it, but not where I can find it. :) It'd be nice for some purposes to be able to pull objects from the "production" server to the "development" server (instead of the other way around) in Zsyncer. The author, Andy McKay, says there is a patch for this "somewhere", but I have done a number of searches at the Sourceforge site, on Google, and via Zope.org, ZopeZen etc, and can't find it -- so if someone knows where this is, it would be really nice to know. Thanks!
