Adding files
by Derek Simkowiak 10 Dec '01

All, I have a few (easy?) questions wrapped into one email here, so I apologize for that. But I haven't been able to find the necessary info in the docs, www.zope.org, or "The Zope Book". My client wants to publish files to Zope using MS-Windows "drag'n'drop". They want to drag entire directory trees and drop them into Zope. Publishing files individually (and manually creating all subdirectories) through the web admin interface is too slow. I see two possible solutions: 1. Use Samba to "share" a filesystem via SMB, and then use some kind of 3rd-partyProduct that lets Zope import a filesystem tree. The client would drop files to the Samba share, and those files would magically appear in Zope. (Can anyone point me to such a Product?) 2. Use either WebDAV or FTP with Windows XP's native support for those protocols. Windows Explorer would make the Zope server appear like any share, but use WebDAV. This would require Windows XP or an Explorer add-on such as FTPDrive (which makes FTP sites appear like a drive). Have I missed any possibilities? My next question is: When I create a object in Zope, I have to select the type (i.e., the "Select type to add..." dropdown). Is it a DTML Document? DTML Method? An Image? When adding files to Zope with WebDAV or FTP, how does it know what "type" to make those new files? If I upload 'spam.html', will that become a DTML Method? A DTML Document? What if I want .html files to be ZPT pages instead? Does it use file extensions, or MIME types, or magic numbers? Finally, related to the above question, my client wants to use Zope to publish LARGE files. Video files, DVD images, etc. (it's a video shop). I've looked at the Product ExtFile (w/ExtImage), which claims to store only meta-data in the Zope ODB, and not the file contents itself. With ExtFile, the contents reside as regular filesystem files, thus not plugging up the ZODB when you have very large files. Frankly, I'm a bit surprised that this is not standard Zope architecture. Anyway, I want to make sure that these huge (300MB to 2 gig) don't bring Zope to a halt. Other than ExtFile, are there any recommendations? If files are uploaded with WebDAV, how do I make it default to "type" ExtFile? Thank You, Derek Simkowiak dereks(a)realloc.net

ZCatalog: searching for all results that *don't* match
by Jean Jordaan 10 Dec '01

Hi all I'm sure this is dead simple, but I'm not getting it. How do I do this? :: brains = catalog( Status != 'dismissed' , meta_type = 'Reminder' ) Specifically, that "!=" inequality condition. I want all reminders that aren't dismissed. Regards, Jean

CookieCrumbler and Apache/IIS
by Jeffrey Robinson 10 Dec '01

Hello folks; This question may have been asked before, but I don't believe I've found an answer to it. I have been using the CookieCrumbler product to give me nice web-based login/logout facilities, and am quite pleased with how it works when I access Zope directly. Though now that I'm trying to get things into more of a production environment I'm running into a bit of a problem... My initial work with one company had Zope behind IIS using PCGI and no matter what it seemed that users could not login when going through IIS. Though if they bypassed the server and went directly to port 8080 there was no problem at all. Now, I have a setup (on Linux) using Apache and rewriting URLs (for Virtual Hosts) to access specific folders in Zope ( using the instructions based on: http://www.zope.org/Members/anser/apache_zserver ). The access and administration passing through Apache work fine; the admin interface is entered into by using the standard Zope (HTTP) authentication... but no matter what I do it seems like I can't get the CookieCrumbler working behind a webserver! Have other folks had difficulties with this before? Can it work, or should I be using a different method of authenticating/tracking visitors? Thanks in advance; Jeff Robinson Graphic Designer Motor Coach Industries

error_type not defined? SURELY YOU JEST...

Hi; I have this code: <dtml-if expr="URL[-(_.len('_frame')):]=='_frame'"> <dtml-call "SESSION.set('select_blueline_temp',select_blueline(_.None,_))"> <dtml-if expr="error_type == 'SessionNotFoundError'"> <dtml-return happysession_exception> <dtml-else> <dtml-return index_frame> </dtml-if> </dtml-if> that produces a traceback stating *global error_type is not defined*. Huh? I thought this was part of the distro! What do? TIA, BenO

exUserFolder - users updating their passwords
by Heimo Laukkanen 10 Dec '01

Hi all, my system still runs 2.3.3 for a while - and there is also exUserFolder 0.8.x installed. Now I noticed a strange thing happening from time to time. When users update their passwords - their old password come back after a while. My users have not been able to say yet, how much time it takes -- but that it happens. I haven't yet tried to update the exUserFolder - installation. I will try that during this week. Just had a thought if anyone else have had same experiences. -huima

Uploading a Zope site
by Terry Hancock 10 Dec '01

10 Dec '01

I've been managing static HTML sites for a long time, although none of them have been terribly ambitious, but I'm fairly new with Zope. My usual practice (which I think is pretty common and a good idea anyway), is to work on a website stored on a local server. Then, when the time comes to commit the changes, I upload the site. I'm attempting the same type of procedure with Zope: I have a local copy which I develop on, and I periodically try to upload content to a Zope account at my ISP (Imeme). The problem I'm running into, is that I now have some dynamically-created content on the site, which I don't want to lose. As designed, a "clobber" approach (i.e. upload over the existing site, replacing any files which have the same name), would work fine (the automatically generated files have predictable names and locations). But there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this (well, you wouldn't *want* it to be too easy). My present procedure is pretty complicated -- I do an export locally, and then an import at the ISP. But I also have to export parts of the ISP version in order to incorporate them. I seem to be getting away with this now, but our site is going to become a lot more dynamic in the future. How can I make this easier? * Can I do a "clobber" type of import, like I could do with an FTP site, for example -- just replace the files I upload, but leave others intact? * Could I do a date-based export (i.e. export the objects that have changed since the previous upload, and overload that after I do my main import?) * Is there an "officially sanctioned zope method" for merging content from the local site into the new site? * Can I do something like this with ZEO? I know it's set up to do it automatically, but I want to do it only on demand, when I'm ready to commit my changes. * Can I write something in Zope/python to make it easier? (Well, obviously the answer is 'yes', but I'm looking for hints here :) ). * Could I somehow do this with CVS? I get the impression that Zope's change-control system is supposed to replace CVS, not work with it, but I'm very new at this. * I just saw something in the documentation about "sessions" which seems similar in concept, but I don't know if it's appropriate. I can't just use the FTP interface, because that wouldn't preserve object properties, without which my site would just fall apart. Please CC, as I receive this list in digest only. First I want to thank all the hard workers that have put all this planet-Zope together. I'm developing a simple template procedure for website presentations (with SVG and the internet I think we can forget powerpointlike presentantions for a while) using zope as THE server. Since my presentation is next friday, I'm creating something that works, but I'm not happy with it. The problem is: I have a couple of methods(DTML and Python)per presentation. The DTML receive as parameter the slide number and calls the python script that returns the name of the slide. Therefore, right now everytime that I want to setup a presentation I have to build two documents. I would like to build only one document per presentation: the python script. A general DTML method should receive two parameters (pResnetation and sLide) and create the page calling the appropiate python script. BUT, I cannot call the python script using the parameter pResentation like <dtml-var foo=expr"pResentation(sLide)">. So the topic question might be how can I receive a parameter using GET that represents a python scritp and call this script from the DTML method without using external scripts? Thanks in advance! PS wouldn't it be nice if some guru can develop a class for presentations that would allow us to assemble a bunch of slides in less than a minute minute using zope? _______________________________________________________________ El Nokia 5510, un aspecto extraño, un sonido genial. You might want to consider trying to seperate the content and logic as much as possible, so that you avoid having to code anything to create a new presentation and/or slide. You could likely create a product using 2 ZClasses that represent a slide and presentation, without much more effort than what you are doing now. I think ou could even subclass file in a ZClass to create a custom SVG file object type that stored metadata about the slide, like its number and the presentation it belongs to in Property sheets. There is likely enough example information in the Zope Book and ZClass howtos on Zope.org to get you started. Also, if it helps, get the REQUEST object directly from your Python script with context.REQUEST['someformvalue']...
