Zope 2.4 object/data problems
by Terry Hancock 14 Nov '01

14 Nov '01

Hi all, I am encountering a really bad set of problems with Zope 2.4.1: After a period of normal behavior, during which I was editing and testing python scripts and associated DTML objects, Zope suddenly stopped accepting edits to a script. (Deeply frustrating, since I was just a couple of hours from finishing a project I've been working on for days!). Furthermore, it was impossible to delete and reload this script. Nor could I load the script under another name. The server returns a "data missing" or "connection refused" message when I attempt to upload this script. (You might think the server had gone down, except that other files work okay before, between, and after such attempts). I've also run into what must be version problems between Zope 2.3.3 and Zope 2.4.1, with similar results (which is why I bring it up). It seems that objects which I loaded or imported into Zope 2.3.3 do not work properly when Zope 2.4.1 is started -- I get "data missing"/"connection refused" messages for files and whole folders, when I attempt this. I tried this most recently, because downgrading to Zope 2.3.3 was the only way I could get the script I mentioned above to load into the Zope site. Unfortunately, this script doesn't run with the Zope 2.3.3/Python 1.5.2 environment, although I can't really figure out why -- it should be legal code in either Python. So I reverted back to 2.4.1 -- but then entire folders gave me these errors, as I said. Is it normal for the object system to be so incompatible between versions? I can understand that there are differences between the performance of the files and whether the scripts actually run, but I'm surprised to find that the data actually gets corrupted. (If indeed that's what's happening). I find it odd that the problems seem to arise when loading particular scripts. Am I dealing with size or other limits on the scripts? Anyway, here are some excerpts from "events.log" showing some of the errors I'm encountering. I'd really appreciate it if someone can clue me in to what's going on and how I can get around it. Thanks! Finding constructor
by Jesper Holmberg 14 Nov '01

14 Nov '01

All right, with the kind help from Chris Withers, I'm stumbling forward. Now I have a new problem. In one product, Parsing, I have this line: self.manage_addProduct['OFSP'].manage_addStep(id=name, title="Step") My wish is to put an object of class Step in my folder of class Parsing. I have defined a constructor for Step: class Step(Folder): ...snip.... def manage_addStep(dispatcher, id, title): "Add a Step to a folder" s=Step(id, title) dispatcher.Destination()._setObject(id, s) and I have put the manage_addStep as a constructor in __init__.py in my Step product folder. However, when I run the Parsing code above, I get the errors: Error Type: AttributeError Error Value: manage_addStep so for some reason, the manage_addStep is not known. Why could this be? Indexing: ZopeSplitter and numbers
by Richard Jones 14 Nov '01

14 Nov '01

We'd like to be able to have numeric-only fields that are searchable using TextIndex (eg. ISBN, telephone numbers, post codes, ...). We're just wondering what the logic is behind ZopeSplitter (and ISO_8859_1) rejecting words that only consist of numbers. Richard

help architecting persistent services in Zope
by Jin Choi 14 Nov '01

14 Nov '01

Hello. I'm attempting to expose a COM object as a Web service using Zope's XML-RPC capabilities. I have it working, but I've come across an issue and many hours of searching documentation have not made it apparent how to resolve it. The COM object I'm using takes a non-trivial amount of time to start up. I'd like to create a bunch of them and keep them around, kind of like database handles in a connection pool. It is not clear to me how to do this, without creating a product analogous to a database connector. I don't suppose there's some way I can create objects at some "global" interpreter level, accessible by every thread? Any help would be appreciated. -Jin

RE: [Zope] Recital support
by sean.upton＠uniontrib.com 14 Nov '01

It sounds to me like the Zope Content Management Framework might work for this kind of thing very, very well (you are essentially looking to create a community-oriented portal, which is something CMF does "out of the box"). It has membership services, and the infrastructure for simple news items, and I think there are some calendar components you can add to it as well... http://cmf.zope.org Sean -----Original Message----- From: Bernard Gray [mailto:buzz999@bellsouth.net] Sent: Wednesday, November 14, 2001 11:12 AM To: zope(a)zope.org Subject: [Zope] Recital support I'm not sure of etiquette on this list ... so apologies if this is the wrong list, etc. I know a piano dealer who would like to provide a free service to piano teachers. Functionality would be basic: - e-mail interface so teachers can sign-up - search page, where people can find teachers by zip code, speciality, etc - recital scheduling, which would allow scheduling of space at the dealers for teachers and their students - news: where the dealer can post news items of an infrequent basis. Is ZOPE a good vehicle for this kind of development? Anyone available for development? The dealer is located in Atlanta, GA. TIA Buz

RE: [Zope] Howto Implement a site search functionality for LocalF S product

thanks for response Well unfortunately I am no zope or python expert. I come from c++ , java environment. Do u have any idea about how much work it is supposed to be, to extend LocalFS product. The actual problem is that I am currently in the process if using zope in our companies intranet. Right now the intranet has 5 GB of data and it's not possible for me to put all those file's one by one inside ZOPe, that's why i cam up with the idea of using LOCALFS. What do you think, is it possible to use ZOPE and LOCALFS in this environment?. any help is appreciable. later kamal deep singh -----Original Message----- From: Jens Vagelpohl [mailto:jens@zope.com] Sent: Monday, November 12, 2001 2:03 PM To: Singh, Kamal Deep Cc: 'zope(a)zope.org' Subject: Re: [Zope] Howto Implement a site search functionality for LocalFS product this can only be done by extending the LocalFS product and the objects it creates to represent the files on the file system. jens On Monday, November 12, 2001, at 04:46 , Singh, Kamal Deep wrote: > Hi, > > I am trying to use zope along with LocalFS product to access the files > from local file system. Installing Win32 extensions
by Meilicke, Scott 14 Nov '01

14 Nov '01

Hi, I'm trying to install win32 extensions to 2.4.2. This seems like it should be simple, but I haven't figured it out, nor found any documentation that has worked (google search). I have installed activestate python 2.1.1. I modified the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intranet\Parameters\St art) to have zope use the activestate version of python, which I confirmed from the zope control panel, but my external method that calls win32com still errors with: Error Type: NameError Error Value: global name 'win32com' is not defined Here's the import stuff from my external method: from win32com.client import constants,Dispatch import pythoncom import base64, os, whrandom, re, string from time import * Any thoughts? Thanks - Scott

Adding, removing views
by Jesper Holmberg 14 Nov '01

14 Nov '01

Hi all, I know I can define my own views of an object with something like this: manage_options = ( {'label': 'Propriétés', 'action': 'manage_editForm',}, {'label': 'Vue', 'action': 'index_html',}, ) But doing this means that all the standard views are gone. I would like to keep some of the standard views, and at the same time add a few of my own. How would I go about doing this?
