Newsgroup vs. Discussion Board vs. Email List

We don't need to make an either/or decision here. We can make a both-and decision. There are discussion board products out there that allow members to decide if they'd like to participate via an email/list interface or a newsgroup interface or in the discussion forum format itself. Web Crossing is the one I know best that comes to mind but I've just finished a book on the subject of online community in these various incarnations so I know there are several others. I find email lists not very productive because of the lack of context. The massive size of the mailings that we sometimes encounter on this list result at least in part from people inadvertently (or advertently for all I know...:-) ) copying entire messages into their sometimes-brief replies. That problem doesn't happen on a properly run message board or in a newsgroup, either for that matter. Using either newsgroups or a discussion board -- and, again, I'm in favor of moving to a solution that gives everyone the participation interface they want rather than sticking with one solution -- would allow us to segment and categorize content as well as to thread discussions to retain context. -- Learn to absorb information, internalize new ideas, and generate creative solutions three times faster, triple guaranteed! Design question about HTML select

I have a simple select like so: <SELECT NAME="a"> <OPTION>1</OPTION> <OPTION>2</OPTION> <OPTION>3</OPTION> </SELECT> I'm using ZPT and based on an input variable - options/optval - want to have corresponding option selected. If options/optval is 2, then the result I want is <SELECT NAME="a"> <OPTION>1</OPTION> <OPTION SELECTED>2</OPTION> <OPTION>3</OPTION> </SELECT> There's definatly 2 general methods. 1) I can use javascript to set the selected option which I don't want to use cause it will get messy. This small example is part of a larger dynamic macro. 2) I can use ZPT TAL:condition sorta expressions to get the job done. validating a field from records in a database

Can anyone else help with my problem? One of the users gave me some help but I'm still having a problem. I'm open for suggestions on another approach or help with the one I'm attempting. Product constructor

Hi! I'm a newcomer to the Zope community, and discovered this powerful application just two weeks ago. Just a brief look at the documentation and features convinced me that this was the right choice for building a dynamic webpage. Starting to comprehend the functionality of Zope, I've run into some obstacles I was hoping someone could help me with. #1 I've created a product for news-articles that have a property sheet with properties such as date, author, title and content. The constructor-form let's you fill in the entire property sheet, but once you've filled out the blanks, I want Zope to store the product in the folder "news/yy-mm/" (year-month that is) no matter where the product was added. How do i achieve this? <dtml-with "Nyhet.createInObjectManager(REQUEST['id'], REQUEST)"> <dtml-call "propertysheets.psNyhetsartikkel.manage_editProperties(REQUEST)"> <dtml-call reindex_obect> </dtml-with> #2 As good as every news article will have a number of images displayed in it, and I'm wondering how I best can associate an image with the article. missing page templates?

Please pardon my ignorance but are page templates part of the standard Zope distribution? I'm running Zope 2.4.1 (binary release, python 2.1, win32-x86), python 2.1.0, win32, but I don't see "page template" in the add drop box of the ZMI nor can I see it as a downloadable product at zope.org. This all cropped up when my installation of DCWorkflow failed due to missing Page Templates. As always, any help is much appreciated. Cheers, Darran. A new list needed?

What I see happen is the new people missing out on all the good stuff that the more advanced people do with Zope. This is one of the things I love about Zope, the ability to interact with the Guru's. Your idea makes sense, I just believe that the quickest way for a newbie to become a hacker is to "use the source". Getting Postgres and exUserFolder to work with Zope

Hi, I spent a couple of hours trying to get Zope to work with postgres. There simply was not one good guide or howto available, all the rigth info was avaialble -- but on different mailinglists. Here is what I did, hope it helps someone else -- or perhaps someone will get a spark from this and write a decent howto. Atleast after this mail people will find the info from one place. Using: Zope Zope 2.3.2 Python 1.52 ExUserFolder 0-8-0 psycopg-0.99.6 postgresql-7.1.3 egenix-mx-base-2.0.2 1) Getting all the pieces together Postgresql - http://www.postgresql.org/ ExUserFolder - http://exuserfolder.sourceforge.net/ psycopg (Postgres database adapter ) - http://www.zope.org/Members/fog/psycopg egenix mx Extensions - http://www.lemburg.com/files/python/eGenix-mx-Extensions.html 2 ) Installing Postgres Downloaded source-distribution and unpacked it to my tmp. cd to the postgres directory. Read from the manual how to install. Here is it snipped in short form. ./configure gmake gmake install adduser postgres mkdir /usr/local/pgsql/data chown postgres /usr/local/pgsql/data su - postgres /usr/local/pgsql/bin/initdb -D /usr/local/pgsql/data /usr/local/pgsql/bin/postmaster -D /usr/local/pgsql/data >logfile 2>&1 & /usr/local/pgsql/bin/createdb test /usr/local/pgsql/bin/psql test After this make sure that the lib-files are in a place that Zope can find them! 3 ) Install egenix mx Extensions Downloaded source-distribution, since only that has the header-files we need while compiling psycopg. Unpack into temp. cd to the directory. python setup.py install 4) Installing psycopg Unpack to the temp. cd to the directory. Make sure you know where your egenix-sources are, postgres lib-files and postgres includes. Then give then in config. Example below. ./configure --with-mxdatetime-includes=../egenix-mx-base-2.0.2/mx/DateTime/mxDateTime/ --with-postgres-libraries=/usr/local/pgsql/lib --with-postgres-includes=/usr/local/pgsql/include make make install 5) Copying files to rigth places This part was frustrating and propably has had everyone wondering for some time. I found this thing to be helpful, tip was also found on different mailing lists. copy mxDateTime.so from: .../python1.5/site-packages/mx/DateTime/mxDateTime.so to: .../python1.5/site-packages/mxDateTime.so so that psycopgmodule.so can find it when zope is started up. And similarly make sure that the psycopgmodule is located in the psycopgmodule.so got placed in .../python1.5/site-packages/psycopgmodule.so 6) Installing exUserFolder Just unpack it and copy to zope/Products - where ever you have it. 7) Create database table for authentication Within the exUserFolder distribution comes a file pgAndreasScheme.sql. >From that we will use only one table for now. This is just for testing purposes. su postgres psql template1 CREATE TABLE "passwd" ( "username" character varying(64) UNIQUE NOT NULL, "password" character varying(64) NOT NULL, "roles" character varying(255), Constraint "passwd_pkey" Primary Key ("username") ); \q You have created your table. 8) Restart zope 9) Go into management interface You should see Z psycopg Database connection in the list available for selection. If not, go to the control panel and product management and see what is the traceback on that product. Propably some of the modules is not found - which can be because you lib-files are somewhwere whwre they should not be ,-) Try to add Z psycopg Database connection. For connection string use: dbname = template1 user = postgres Ok. Everything should work. You can test it by clicking the test-tab in Z psycopg and trying following sql-query: select * from passwd; 10) Add exUserFolder Warning. Don't do this on the root folder! Select postgres authentication source. And select rest as you like. Click next. For authentication properties write: Table Name: passwd Username Column: username Password column: password Roles Column: roles Etc. Have fun. Hope this helps. -huima
