Zope Editor

Hi Everyone, I was wondering what you think is the best editor for developing with Zope. Using the webinterface works okay if you use a few files, but becomes messy if you edit a lot at the same time. I myself have been using UltraEdit32 for a while now, using the ftp interface of Zope. It's not a bad editor, but you cannot create projects with links to ftp files in it. So what do you prefer? Douwe

ZPugDC 25 October Jim Fulton
by Chris Abraham 22 Oct '01

22 Oct '01

Hi All: I have been under water all month and I am sorry that I have not been better at keeping this community list going. Anyway, the reason there has been so much frustration is because ZPUG.org has been split between two servers and I just wanted to remain hands-off until things resolved. They didn't. Well, I have not been able to get onto the server to change the front pager, but we have the delightful and elegant Mr. Jim Fulton, the father of Zope and the amazing (so amazing that even the Python kids love it) ZODB! So, from 7-9 on October 25th, we will bask in Jim's presentation as well as really spending more time and energy keeping it simple. There will be plenty of time for questions, a liberal half-time schmooze, and whatnot. We will be able to fit into the larger room because Jim will be bringing Zope Corp's little overhead and a fancy laptop. Bring your notebooks, a lot of fun will be had by all. Joya Subudhi of Foretec Seminars will be sharing with us all of the joy of the upcoming Python 10 conference <http://www.python10.com> -- and Python 10 will be plying us with drinks at Brickskeller afterwards. Also, we are getting our server house in order and the folks and imeme <http:// www.imeme.com> are generous enough to offer ZPug a hope gratis! They do amazing work so if you have any Zope Hosting needs, please go check them out and tell them you got the message from us! Thanks, all, for your patience! Newsgroup vs. Discussion Board vs. Email List
by Dan Shafer 21 Oct '01

21 Oct '01

We don't need to make an either/or decision here. We can make a both-and decision. There are discussion board products out there that allow members to decide if they'd like to participate via an email/list interface or a newsgroup interface or in the discussion forum format itself. Web Crossing is the one I know best that comes to mind but I've just finished a book on the subject of online community in these various incarnations so I know there are several others. I find email lists not very productive because of the lack of context. The massive size of the mailings that we sometimes encounter on this list result at least in part from people inadvertently (or advertently for all I know...:-) ) copying entire messages into their sometimes-brief replies. That problem doesn't happen on a properly run message board or in a newsgroup, either for that matter. Using either newsgroups or a discussion board -- and, again, I'm in favor of moving to a solution that gives everyone the participation interface they want rather than sticking with one solution -- would allow us to segment and categorize content as well as to thread discussions to retain context. -- Learn to absorb information, internalize new ideas, and generate creative solutions three times faster, triple guaranteed! Design question about HTML select
by azbok＠yahoo.com 21 Oct '01

21 Oct '01

I have a simple select like so: <SELECT NAME="a"> <OPTION>1</OPTION> <OPTION>2</OPTION> <OPTION>3</OPTION> </SELECT> I'm using ZPT and based on an input variable - options/optval - want to have corresponding option selected. If options/optval is 2, then the result I want is <SELECT NAME="a"> <OPTION>1</OPTION> <OPTION SELECTED>2</OPTION> <OPTION>3</OPTION> </SELECT> There's definatly 2 general methods. 1) I can use javascript to set the selected option which I don't want to use cause it will get messy. This small example is part of a larger dynamic macro. 2) I can use ZPT TAL:condition sorta expressions to get the job done. My current solution is like this, but I don't like it at all: <SELECT NAME="a" TAL:define="ov options/optval"> <OPTION SELECTED TAL:condition="python:ov == 1">1</OPTION> <OPTION TAL:condition="python:ov != 1">1</OPTION> <OPTION SELECTED TAL:condition="python:ov == 2">2</OPTION> <OPTION TAL:condition="python:ov != 2">2</OPTION> <OPTION SELECTED TAL:condition="python:ov == 3">3</OPTION> <OPTION TAL:condition="python:ov != 3">3</OPTION> </SELECT> Is there a better more general solution? Thanks greatly for any suggestions

validating a field from records in a database
by Sheree Beaudette 21 Oct '01

Can anyone else help with my problem? One of the users gave me some help but I'm still having a problem. I'm open for suggestions on another approach or help with the one I'm attempting. Thanks in advance!! -----Original Message----- From: Beaudette, Sheree To: 'stuart.nicholson(a)wirelessdatanz.com' Sent: 10/18/01 8:22 AM Subject: FW: [Zope] validating a field with records in a database It's me again. Ok, I tried what you said and it seems logical but I keep getting the so informative 'Error on Page' javascript error. Here's what I have. <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript"> var listofids = new Array(); <dtml-in clsqGetObligorUniqueIDs> listofids[<dtml-var sequence-index>] = <dtml-var obl_UniqueID>; </dtml-in> function uniqueid(uniqueIDfield) var i = 0; do if (listofids[i]==uniqueIDfield) alert ("This ID already exists."); i=listofids.length; } } while (++i < listofids.length); } </SCRIPT> then in my form I have it calling this function <INPUT TYPE="TEXT" NAME="obl_UniqueID" onChange="uniqueid(obl_UniqueID)" tabindex="1" size="10" value=''> I tried a couple of different things... I wasn't sure how to refer to the array. Do I pass it in on the onChange event? I tried that and still got the error. So if this is the case how do I refer to it? Also I printed a list of current variables and listofids isn't there. When would this be populated? I think I'm just missing a piece or two. Hope you can help! Thanks! If you want to populate a Javascript array to use on the client side for form validation, I believe you want something more like: <script language="javascript"> var listofids = new Array(); <dtml-in clsqGetObligorUniqueIDs> listofids[<dtml-var sequence-index>] = <dtml-var obl_UniqueID>; </dtml-in> </script> And then use this array for your Javascript form validation. I'm fairly certain this isn't the best solution as you're building a big static array (depending on the number of entries in your MySQL table) in Javascript. But I think it's the only option if you want to do validation all on the same form (without redirecting and validating on the Zope server). The trick here of course is to distinguish the Zope server side DTML scripting from the Web browesr client side Javascript. Hope that helps? Stuart Nicholson Software Engineer Wireless Data -----Original Message----- From: Sheree Beaudette [mailto:sheree@psouth.net] Sent: Thursday, October 18, 2001 3:25 PM To: zope(a)zope.org Subject: [Zope] validating a field with records in a database I hope someone can help with this. I'm under the gun to get this done... the concept of what I have to do is... I have a form with several fields on it. all of the data, once submitted, goes into 1 MySQL table called t_Obligors. 1. the user will enter an id (obl_UniqueID) into an input field 2. as soon as they enter it I want the data in the field to be verified that a prior Unique ID does not exist (probably onChange event) by searching the t_Obligors table (I have a sql query called cldmGetObligorUniqueIDs) at this point obl_UniqueID is not the primary key and I'm not sure if I want it to be because the database was not originally set up with this field so it would be a lot of work to go back and re-populate data. (I'm also under a tight deadline) 3. to do the actual event I was using Javascript (this one would occur on the onChange event) for my form validation since that's what I know and I don't have time at this point to learn something new since it needs to be done very quickly. 4. if there's a match they get a message saying that ID is already in use so please enter another Here was a thought I had been playing with: below sets an increment, i, and attempts to populate an array for future use in my Javascript but I cannot get the array to increment, I don't even know how to refer an array (or whatever it's called) in Zope. <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('i', 0)"> - sets increment to zero <dtml-in clsqGetObligorUniqueIDs> - loops through the query and gets all Unique IDs <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('listofids.[i]',obl_UniqueID)"> - trying to set the array with unique IDs <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('i', i+1)"> </dtml-in> this was only one thought, I'm open for suggestions... Product constructor
by Øystein W. Høie 21 Oct '01

21 Oct '01

Hi! I'm a newcomer to the Zope community, and discovered this powerful application just two weeks ago. Just a brief look at the documentation and features convinced me that this was the right choice for building a dynamic webpage. Starting to comprehend the functionality of Zope, I've run into some obstacles I was hoping someone could help me with. #1 I've created a product for news-articles that have a property sheet with properties such as date, author, title and content. The constructor-form let's you fill in the entire property sheet, but once you've filled out the blanks, I want Zope to store the product in the folder "news/yy-mm/" (year-month that is) no matter where the product was added. How do i achieve this? <dtml-with "Nyhet.createInObjectManager(REQUEST['id'], REQUEST)"> <dtml-call "propertysheets.psNyhetsartikkel.manage_editProperties(REQUEST)"> <dtml-call reindex_obect> </dtml-with> #2 As good as every news article will have a number of images displayed in it, and I'm wondering how I best can associate an image with the article. If I've understood correctly, I could let the newsarticle-class inherit the Object Manager property and contain the images, but is this a good approach? Thanks in advance, Oystein W. Hoie

missing page templates?
by darran.edmundson＠anu.edu.au 21 Oct '01

21 Oct '01

Please pardon my ignorance but are page templates part of the standard Zope distribution? I'm running Zope 2.4.1 (binary release, python 2.1, win32-x86), python 2.1.0, win32, but I don't see "page template" in the add drop box of the ZMI nor can I see it as a downloadable product at zope.org. This all cropped up when my installation of DCWorkflow failed due to missing Page Templates. As always, any help is much appreciated. Cheers, Darran.
