Disabling acquisition on a soft reference
by Arian de Wit 05 Sep '01

Hi All, I'm setting up a site where the nav menu links are specified for each folder using a "menu" object. If it's not present in a folder, it will be acquired from further up, as usual. For some pages within a folder, I'd like to use a page-specific menu and not the folder's one at all. To do this, I figured I'd create another menu object for that page object called "<pagename>.menu" and use a soft reference to render that in my standard_html_footer instead of rendering the folder's "menu" object. So here's the bit of ugly DTML that I've got in my footer: <div class="menu"> <dtml-try> <dtml-with aq_explicit> <dtml-let spliturl="_.string.split(absolute_url(), '/')" menuname="spliturl[_.len(spliturl)-1:]+['menu']" menulink="_.string.join(menuname, '.')"> <dtml-var expr="_[menulink]"> </dtml-let> </dtml-with> <dtml-except> <dtml-var menu> </dtml-try> </div> It constructs what the name of the page-specific menu would be for this page (in the variable menulink) then uses that in the soft reference _[menulink]. Unfortunately, when rendering a page called, say, index.html it will acquire index.html.menu from further up the tree if not available in the page's own folder, even though I have wrapped this all up in <dtml-with aq_explicit> to supposedly disable acquisition. I'm obviously missing a subtlety here -- any ideas? I'd especially like to know if there's a much simpler way to do all this and I'm just being thick. Do you have any thoughts on how feasible that kind > of design is with Zope? The same, only that they would not be called "properties". Zope's properties have only simple types, general objects can not be properties. But there is no problem to make your objects folder like (or ZInstances derived from ObjectManager) and use contained objects the same way you would use properties.... Dieter

RE: [Zope] Block IP address in Z-Server?

Using linux ipchains (2.2.x kernel) or iptables (2.4.x) can block a given IP range and given ports. I can't recall the syntax - go to www.linux.com and click on the how-to section. Hi, is it possible to ban an ip address from accessing Zope? (similar to Apache's "Deny from" directive). There are some idiots doing ridiculous amounts of spidering against my site and I want to block their IP's. If not does anyone know of an os-level way to block it? FastCGI Errors
by Doyon, Jean-Francois 05 Sep '01

Hello, I'm getting the following on STDOUT more or less regularely, though I'm not sure why, as it does not seem to affect zope in any way (Everything keeps chugging along nicely). 2001-09-05T18:40:31 ERROR(200) ZServer uncaptured python exception, closing channel <FCGIChannel connected at 880e63c> (socket.error:(32, 'Broken pipe') [/var/tmp/python2-2.1.1-root/usr/lib/python2.1/asynchat.py|initiate_send|213 ] [/var/tmp/python2-2.1.1-root/usr/lib/python2.1/asyncore.py|send|330]) I've just started using it so it's no big deal yet, but I want to make sure this won't become a problem under load. This is a redhat 7.1 system with Python 2.1.1, Zope 2.4.0, apache 1.3.20 and mod_fastcgi 2.2.10 ... Thanks in advance for the help! I like the squid-in-front config because it buys us the best of all worlds for our diverse setup. We run Apache to support static content, PHP, and some legacy CGI scripts too, as we have a large site with very diverse offerings and products built on a variety of development platforms; our Zope apps just don't use Apache as a front end, for us, it looks like this: ^ | /|\ v | +------------------------+ | Cache (squid pt. 80)-+ | | | /|\ | | | | | | | | +->{redirector} | | +----------------------|-+ ________________/ \______\_________________ \ \ \ +---------\------\------------+ +-\-----------+ | Node \ \ | | Node | | [Apache Port 80] \ | | Same Config | | (PHP,Perl,Static) \ | +-------------+ | [ Zope Port 9673 ] | +-----------------------------+ >This is the main reason I spent that time looking at squid - the security >aspect. But, we've built up quite a bit of experience with Apaches >ReWriteRules and have a requirement for PHP and (cough) Perl scripts to run >alongside our Zope sites as well.

I wasn't aware of that. That helps me deal with the issue. You're right, of course, many of the client objects will have only a subset of the overall possible object property list defined. Cool.
