Version Control Question
by ken bolton 30 Aug '01

30 Aug '01

Hi guys, I posed this question to the fellows at NYZUG yesterday evening, and they suggested that I post it here, point blank. We want to use version control on our site. Without sparking a religious war, what do you recommend for syncing a development environment, a quality assurance environment, and a production environment? Is the built-in Zope Version package enough? Should we use that in conjunction with ZEO? Is ZEO on its own enough? Should we use CVS for Product maintainance? ZSyncer? Initially, I thought the Zope Version would be enough, do your work in a version, have the tester start working in the version when the developer was done, and then the tester saves the work when everything is good to go. I've been told (by non-Zopistas, and even anti-Zopers) that we need to have three environments. How would you go about implementing a system to please nervous project managers? cheers, ken

RE: [Zope] Version Control Question

I would definitely use some sort of source control - CVS or Visual Source Safe (Microsoft). Keep as much of your code in the file system so you can use source control, or if you're on a unix type, try ZCVSMixin. It's on www.zope.org, and saves ZODB objects as XML in CVS. I don't know how it would integrate with ZEO, but I don't see it as being a problem. Also, since your developer base is a bit sketchy, document everything so it's easier to get up to speed, and you don't lose knowledge when someone leaves. You could even use zwiki or similar for your docs (it's fast and easy to use). Unfortunately, they keep popping developers on and off this project, and its the only Zope project in the house (for now!). How do you propose dealing with Extensions and Products in the filesystem, or other filesystem based things? Could someone say "Don't use ZEO for this"? problems using Zope & mxDateTime

Hi all, I'm trying to determine whether this is a Zope problem or a bug in mxDateTime: Whenever Zope reloads the module with my tiny and dumb ExternalMethod "splitDate()", which imports mxDateTime, I get the following error: <error> Error Type: TypeError Error Value: copy_reg is not intended for use with classes ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ File /var/lib/Zope-2.4.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/DocumentTemplate/DT_Util.py, line 204, in eval (Object: REQUEST.set('m',utils.splitDate(odd))) (Info: utils) File <string>, line 2, in f (Object: guarded_getattr) File /var/lib/Zope-2.4.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/Products/ExternalMethod/ExternalMet hod.py, line 229, in __call__ (Object: splitDate) File /var/lib/Zope-2.4.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/Products/ExternalMethod/ExternalMet hod.py, line 207, in getFunction (Object: splitDate) File /var/lib/Zope-2.4.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/App/Extensions.py, line 167, in getObject (Info: ('/var/lib/Zope-2.4.0-linux2-x86/Extensions/BELOG.py', 'BELOG')) File /var/lib/Zope-2.4.0-linux2-x86/Extensions/BELOG.py, line 7, in ? Semi-OT: Compiling Psycopg on Mac OS X?
by Zachery Bir 30 Aug '01

Anyone using any of the Postgres DAs with Mac OS X? I've got Postgres 7.1.3 and Zope 2.4.0 and Python 2.1. I'm trying to get Psycopg 0.99.5 to compile, and I'm encountering problems when using precompiled headers. I'm not that experienced with the differences with Apple's implementation of gcc, so any help would be appreciated. Is it possible to use Vim or some related windows editor to edit zope code rather than the text window thingy. I mean something easier than cutting and pasting all the text from one to the other. [ANN] ZShell 1.3
by Jerome Alet 30 Aug '01

30 Aug '01

Hi, I'm very pleased to announce you the latest version of ZShell, the Zope Shell. This is the latest version which is not a Zope product (I promise), and only bug fixes will eventually be added from now on. New features are: * ZShellCLI is now part of the package, thanks to Andy McKay. ZShellCLI is an independant executable script in Python which allows you to use ZShell from your favorite command line. * Some bug fixes and syntax cleaning, thanks to Holger Lehmann, Jean Jordaan, and Andy McKay. * Debian manual page for ZShell is now part of the package, thanks to Jim Penny. * Five new commands were added: uptime: displays Zope's uptime dbname: displays Zope's database name dbsize: displays Zope's database size zope: search terms on zope.org and last but not least, the command everybody missed: exec: executes external commands The exec command executes external commands as the user who launched Zope (usually user nobody), e.g.: exec ls -la / WARNING: exec telnet needs more work ;-) I'd be especially happy to receive informations/patches to make the exec command work under Windows which I don't plan to test personnally. It may work but I really don't know: you're on your own. *** CONTEST *** I'm planning to send a personnal (cheap) gift to the author of the best or more interesting thing done using exclusively ZShell commands, so if anybody has ideas on how to organise such a contest, or want to be part of the informal jury, please let me know. *** CONTEST *** Any comment is welcome. bye, Jerome Alet - alet(a)unice.fr

REQUEST problems
by jonathan 30 Aug '01

30 Aug '01

Hi All, I am reletively new to zope, and in particular to products, so please accept my appologies if I am asking silly questions. I have in fact nearly completed my first ever product. The product was developed on a installation of Zope 2.4.0 and is giving errors when used with Zope 2.3.2. The error only occours when a method of the product is called directly from the web. The error does not occour when a dtml method is called that contains a reference to a method of the product. The error itself is that it can not find the object AUTHENTICATED_USER. Printing out REQUEST confirms this. There is no AUTHENTICATED_USER. Again this only happens when calling a method of the product directly. e.g. browsing http://zope-site/product/method generates an error but http://zope-site/dtml_method does not, even when dtml_method contains <dtml-var expr="product.method(REQUEST)"> Is this some sort of bug that was fixed in Zope 2.4.0 or has the way things should be done changed between versions? tia..
