start script for freebsd?
by vertigo 16 Aug '01

Hello everyone, i am wondering if there is anyone out there that might be able to assist me in setting up a script to run Zope2.3.3 as a daemon on my freeBSD4.2 server. I have started with the redhat script by Markoer, and have simply edited the paths to reflect correctly as to my directory structure. when i attempt to execute the script from shell by typing "/usr/local/etc/rc.d/zope.sh restart", it returns "case: Too many arguements". this occurs with any arguement that i issue, even none.. when the server is booting, and it is starting local packages, it echos "echo_success: not found". below is the content of the script: -=-=-=-=- case "$1" in start) # Check if zope is already running if [ ! -f /var/lock/subsys/zope ] ; then echo -n 'Starting zope daemon: ' /usr/local/zope/Zope-2.3.3-src/start 2> /dev/null i=0 while [ $i -lt 90 ]; do [ -f /usr/local/zope/Zope-2.3.3-src/var/Z2.pid ] && break sleep 1 && echo -n "." let i=i+1 done if [ $i -ge 90 ] ; then echo "Time out." exit 1 else cat /usr/local/zope/Zope-2.3.3-src/var/Z2.pid > /var/lock/subsys/zope touch /var/lock/subsys/zope cat /usr/local/zope/Zope-2.3.3-src/var/Z2.pid > /var/run/zope.pid touch /var/run/zope echo " OK" fi else echo "zope already running." fi echo ;; stop) echo -n 'Stopping zope daemon: ' [ -f /usr/local/zope/Zope-2.3.3-src/var/Z2.pid ] && kill `cat /home/zope/zope/var/Z2.pid` rm -f /var/lock/subsys/zope rm -f /usr/local/zope/Zope-2.3.3-src/var/Z2.pid rm -f /usr/local/zope/Zope-2.3.3-src/var/pcgi.soc rm -f /usr/local/zope/Zope-2.3.3-src/var/Data.fs.lock rm -f /usr/local/zope/Zope-2.3.3-src/var/zProcessManager.pid echo " OK" echo ;; reload|restart) $0 stop $0 start ;; status) if [ -f /usr/local/zope/Zope-2.3.3-src/var/Z2.pid ] ; then cat /usr/local/zope/Zope-2.3.3-src/var/Z2.pid > /var/lock/subsys/zope touch /var/lock/subsys/zope cat /usr/local/zope/Zope-2.3.3-src/var/Z2.pid > /var/run/zope.pid touch /var/run/zope echo "zope (pid `head -1 /var/run/zope.pid`) is running..." else echo "zope not running." fi ;; *) echo "Usage: /usr/local/etc/rc.d/zope.sh {start|stop|restart|reload|status}" exit 1 esac -=-=-=-=- note that /var/lock/subsys doesn't exist by default on freeBSD, so for ease of use, i added those directories myself (root owns them). in saying that, i can only wonder if this is a permission error, but im not sure... the attribs of the script are 755, executable. Thank you, Shaun

Re: [Zope] solaris and zope

Hi folks... We've been moving into a new building this week and fell off the internet, I wasn't able to respond earlier. I've got two Sun Netra X1s (512 MB each) running Solaris 2.8 and Zope 2.4.0 and they seem to run reasonably fast. I don't have Redhat to compare with unfortunately. The setup I've got is Zope/Zserver on one machine but served to the world by Apache (using named VirtualHost/ProxyPass) on the other. It's probably not going to best khttpd for speed, but it's certainly more than enough for our needs. Is there any way we could benchmark these systems and compare? The terms "running slow" and "flys" don't really give you a frame of reference. The only thing I can compare with is that our site was originally static pages served by Apache with a tiny smidgen of browser-detect PHP code. These pages were lightning quick to load. Zope seems to serve them up only a tiny fraction of a second slower (for instance, I can see the image block a split-second before it fills in - whereas before the page would load in a "flash"). However, this is an unfair comparison as Zope is doing the browser detection and at least two SSI (header/footer). If it really is an issue, let's get to the bottom of it... =) Paul.

Zope "Weekly" News
by Chris McDonough 15 Aug '01

I'll be taking over the production of the Zope "Weekly" News (which will likely only be produced on a biweekly basis and renamed) for the foreseeable future. If anyone has anything they'd like to announce in the news for the next edition, please let me know, and we may be able to get it in there. RE: [Zope] Zope 2.4.0 bugs and comments

Actually, I've seen this one as well. Zope 2.4.0, with the hotfix, running on Win2k Server with an Apache front-end via rewrites. I've got a virtual host monster in root and siteroots at the roots of the vhost directories. The client is the latest IE, running on Win2k Pro. -----Original Message----- From: Joachim Werner Sent: Wed 08/15/2001 11:34 > I've seen Zope get really confused about my "login" status sometimes and > display some folders with "index_html" as if I merely wanted to look at them > instead of manage/edit them. I had to play some tricks with the login Those are all very strange and uncommon things. I guess most of them have to do with your browser cache settings or so. Remember that your browser might cache a site with you logged in even if you are not any more and display it wrongly. If they were real Zope bugs, I am sure they would have been reported earlier ...

I click the back button all the time.
