Server Side Questions

Is it possible to execute a cgi script (possibly not python) within a dtml document? Are server side includes possible? And can a web server (say apache) be configured to procces Zope objects as if they are some other type of document that can or should be proccess by the server before being sent to a browser? Mixo

Re: [Zope] <dtml-var xxx> in a python script

The problem with trying to translate DTML to Python is that <dtml-var xxx> incorporates a lot of magical behaviour. Apart from rendering the object (calling it if it is callable), as implied by the ()-or-no-() above, the name 'xxx' could be found in many places. Here's a sampling of ways to access an object 'xxx' in a Script: 1. From the target of the Script, or its context: context.xxx getattr(context, 'xxx') 2. From the Script's container, regardless of context: container.xxx getattr(container, 'xxx') 3. From a submitted form, cookies, URL query, or REQUEST.set() call: context.REQUEST['xxx'] context.REQUEST.form['xxx'] context.REQUEST.cookies['xxx'] context.REQUEST.other['xxx'] Cheers, Evan @ Zope

Win2K 2.4 install problem ....
by waltonl＠franklin.edu 15 Aug '01

Just did a fresh install of 2.4 using the windows binary release, and it won't start up due to the following: C:\Web\zope\WebSite>"C:\Web\zope\WebSite\bin\python.exe" "C:\Web\zope\WebSite\z2.py" -D Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:\Web\zope\WebSite\z2.py", line 540, in ? import ZServer File "C:\WEB\zope\WEBSITE\ZServer\__init__.py", line 87, in ? from medusa.test import max_sockets File "C:\WEB\zope\WEBSITE\ZServer\medusa\test\max_sockets.py", line 2, in ? import socket File "C:\WEB\zope\WEBSITE\bin\lib\socket.py", line 41, in ? from _socket import * ImportError: Module use of python20.dll conflicts with this version of Python. I searched the mailing list and didn't find anything to help, so any ideas? Thanks, Lynn

Remote scripting?
by René Olsthoorn 15 Aug '01

15 Aug '01

Hello, Remote Scripting means: calling server-side code from a client-side script without causing the active page to be reloaded. (for more information see http://www.ashleyit.com/rs/) The website mentioned above contains an HTML page which contains two comboboxes. The choices offered in the second combobox are calculated on the server, depending on the choice that the user makes in the first combobox. The values of the second combobox are retrieved from the server by communicating with a java-servlet, and all this is done without reloading the active page. (using DHTML, ofcourse). Has anyone done such a thing with Zope, in stead of a java-servlet? Cheers, René Olsthoorn, Mediasystemen, The Netherlands.

How to get (and manipulate) rendered html of a dtml method prior to publishing?
by Richard Ettema 15 Aug '01

15 Aug '01

Hi, How do I get a dtml-method to render its html prior to publishing the page? I have a dtml-method which normally is inserted into another page i.e. <dtml-var some_dtml> inside index_html. This inserts the dtml of some_dtml into index_html, then index_html is published, right? But I have a single occasion where I need to get the rendered html some_dtml would create, prior to index_html being published. I need to retrieve some of the html using _.string.split etc. How do I grab the html in such away that I can manipulate it?? I have tried variations of <dtml-var some_dtml html_quote> which gives me the html I need, but I cant workout how I can put this into a <dtml-let ...> or similar to manipulate. I have tried other ideas but they all return the dtml in some_dtml rather than its html, giving me errors. Your help on a simple solution (I am sure!!!) will be much appreciated. Thanks Richard

Also check out CURL which was originally a DARPA sponsored MIT project to deal with some long standing problems with the client-side/server-side chaos in web based programming.
