AttributeError: _v_blocks
by Mike Murphy 06 Aug '01

Hi! I am having a problem with Zope after upgrading to v2.4.0, and I am not exactly sure when it started to crop up... but I am getting AttributeError exceptions whenever I attempt to Add or View any of the following objects: Accelerated HTTP Cache Manager External Method Mail Host RAM Cache Manager Script (Python) Site Access Rule SiteRoot Virtual Host Monster Vocabulary Z SQL Method Z Catalog Zope Tutorial Other objects add/view/manage just fine. For each of these AttributeError exceptions, I get a similar stack trace where it choked in line 241 in python/App/special_dtml.py (see below). Does this error look obvious to anybody? For what it is worth, I may not have upgraded correctly. I know I have fiddled with permission settings after running ./install (docs recommend not to launch as root, but I run it on port 80); and I also just copied the Data.fs* files from my prior Zope-2.3 tree into my Zope-2.4 tree... without running any type of converter utility on it. Finally, I installed the ZPT products (Page Templates, ZTUtils, TAL) latest version I think. Any ideas? FYI: DC -> ZC, plus 2.4 released
by Paul Everitt 06 Aug '01

06 Aug '01

Hello everyone. As first reported by Andy "Scoop" McKay on ZopeZen, we're changing our name from Digital Creations to Zope Corporation. The name change has the fortunate side effect of letting us be referred to as ZC instead of DC, which almost sounds the same if you speak with a lisp. :^) The news is up on LWN, which links to the press release. LWN also announced the 2.4 release. Why are we doing the name change? Good question, especially since I used to make the spiel about the company name being separate from the software name. In a nutshell, it confused the mess out of everyone. Briefly stated, Zope needs to appeal better to the crowd that expects good packaging and clear brands. We've trial ballooned this with a number of you over the last couple of months and the need for this is conclusive. There's a new site at www.zope.com that reflects the change. I expected to tell the Zope list on Friday, but we're still sorting through some font issues. :^( Does this harbinger any other major changes? Not really <wink>. :^) Seriously, we're looking at a number of things to make Zope well-positioned and competitive, as well as doing the same for the things DC/ZC does. The biggest thing in the coming weeks is, by a mile, opening up the CVS. This is the beginning of a series of steps to really work together with the community and tap into the potential that's been underutilized. I'm quite happy with where the direction is going on this and the likely outcomes. We'll be at the O'Reilly conference this week, sporting new brochures and shirts. We'll be giving away some of our stockpile of deprecated Zope shirts with DC on the front, so drop by our booth and get some of these hot collectibles before they're out of issue! :^) --Paul

Filemaker Pro 5.5 ODBC and Zope
by Jim Washington 06 Aug '01

06 Aug '01

Things I needed to know and finally figured out, and this may not be the only possible solution though I think I tried every other combination: 1. Apparently, the Local Database Companion is invisible to ODBC, and connections fail. 2. When the Remote Database Companion is used, everything works as advertised. 3. You do not need to specify individual Filemaker files to the ODBC setup. Give it a single name, and properly shared open files will appear as tables to SQL under that DSN. Do specify a "remote connection" with the server's address. System: Zope-2.4.0, Win2kServer, FMPro5.5, ZODBCDA3.1.0b2 -- Jim Washington

Zope process memory leak?
by Tom Cameron 06 Aug '01

06 Aug '01

I have been watching my zope process carefully now for a few weeks and I have noticed that it seems to have a memory leak. It generally starts off at about 70Mb Ram and then grows up to about 240Mb over about 5 to 10 days. It then forks a new process and starts over again. This seems to have little effect on the usage and apart from the occasional restart of Zope goes unnoticed. I am just curious if this is normal behaviour of have I done something wrong? I am running Zope 2.3.2 on FreeBSD 4.0. My site is not heavily loaded. Daily averages are:- Hits:37582 Files:28587 Pages:13134 Visitors:964 TIA Tom

Error creating file (426) when accessing Zope using FTP
by Marc Balmer 06 Aug '01

06 Aug '01

Hi All I have a problem with Zope that I can not solve, althoug I checked the web etc..: I try to upload a file to my Zope installation at localhost:8021 using FTP. When I "put" the file I keep getting an error 426, error creating file. The Zope is 2.4.0 for Mac OS X with Python 2.1 I log in as regular Zope user that is defined in the root acl_users folder and that has the Manager role. I tried various FTP clients (console, Pepper, GoLive), always the same result. I am getting crazy on this one... Any ideas? BTW: I have the same problem with another Zope Installation on Linux. SSL + ProxyPass + Zope question...
by Eric Walstad 06 Aug '01

06 Aug '01

Hello, Apache is listening on port 80 and 443, Zope listening on port 8080. When a request comes in for port 443 (or HTTPS) Apache forwards the request to Zope on port 8080 and sends the results back out thru SSL, just as it should. If a user goes to https://mysite.com/PasswordProtectedArea/ an SSL connection is created and the password is forwarded to Zope after it's been sent thru SSL. However, if the user goes to http://mysite.com:8080/PasswordProtectedArea/ Apache never sees the request and it goes straight to Zope. The user is then prompted for a password, which would be sent back to Zope without SSL. So my question is, how do I keep Zope from accepting any requests from the outside world unless they've gone thru Apache first? Can I tell Zope to listen on something like 192.168.1.123:8080 so that it will never see requests from the outside world? TIA, Eric.

Great html-applet ( commecial ) to be used as a content-editing tool with Zope
by Heimo Laukkanen 06 Aug '01

06 Aug '01

I've been playing with Zope for a couple of months now, and actually creating my thesis about using intranet's to various cool things and - duh - creating intranets with Zope. What I quickly learned while working with non tech. people, Zope with MsWordMungrer, STX_Document and other great tools wasn't yet enough. Eventhough Structured text is nice and powerfull tool, it is good only for techies who are willing to really learn the rules. People who only were concerned about the content, wanted a better tool for editing information. And if possible, that tool could resemble Word. I just bougth Realobjects Edit-on-Pro (http://www.realobjects.de/english/editonpro_e.htm) and replaced all my textarea-inputfields in our intranet's pages. Wow - what a difference! If you have a budget for your project and want to take your Zope-project to the next level, check that product out.

Zope and Lotus Notes
by David Lutz 06 Aug '01

06 Aug '01

Hi Zopelist, I'm writing an article contrasting Zope and Lotus Notes/Domino. ( BTW http://domino.lotus.com/ ... seems to be down at the moment :-) Yes I know it is Apples and Oranges, but I was going to point out the meteoric rise of Zope compared to a slow moving Lotus, July 2001 Netcraft survey http://www.netcraft.com/Survey/Reports/0107/ Zope: 11756 Lotus-Domino: 55334 January 2001 Netcraft survey http://www.netcraft.com/Survey/Reports/0101/ Zope: 1527 Lotus-Domino: 50389 July 2000 Netcraft survey http://www.netcraft.com/Survey/Reports/0007/ Zope: 759 Lotus-Domino: 40306 and I also wanted to give an example of a company with a Lotus Notes/Domino web application that had been rewritten in Zope, or done in Zope instead of Notes. Does anyone know of such an example? Many thanks, David

Re: [Zope] Folder visibility

If Person1 has a local role of 'FolderViewer' in Folder1, but not in Folder2, he cannot do 'FolderViewer' things in Folder2, even through acquisition. At least, that's how it should work. Security in Zope is an entirely local affair, and neither the client session state nor anything other than location matters. You only have the access of a local role in the object in which it was granted and its children. Not siblings, not ancestors, nothing else. Consider it like placing a user folder in a subfolder of root: users cannot authenticate at the root level or in other folders, only in the folder in which the user folder lives. --jcc (authenticated)

More information about users
by Juan Garcia Garcia 06 Aug '01

06 Aug '01

I have an User Folder with the logins of the users, but I want to store more information about this users (like his full name). I usually do this with another folder that contains 'files', where the Id is the login and in his properties I store other information. I want to know if there is other way to do this easier (better without using a DataBase). Thank you.
