Then again, why force folks to cast when it doesn't make common sense; there is a clear divide to me between a div operation (pure integer) and a "divide" operation, and I would opt toward the common-sense interpretation of /... it only makes sense in a loosely typed scripting language... The issue of potentially braking old code, that's something else altogether... I don't see why this will affect Zope in any huge way... IPC10 Call For Tutorials

We're now accepting proposals for tutorials for IPC10, the annual Python conference. We had a good batch last year, and are hoping to have some equally good ones this year. Tutorials can cover any topic related to Python or its use, so graphics, networking, web, XML, Zope, etc are all fair game. Anything that you think will be of interest to a segment of the Python community. With all the changes in the language, it might be nice to have a tutorial on advanced Python usage, covering new features, OO, functional programming style, etc. Or perhaps a team-taught class that combines multiple topics to build some non-trivial application, like using wxpython and the protocol libraries to build a news/mail reader. Feel free to come up with unusual topics or approaches, or to contact me with a half-baked idea. Maybe we can turn it into something good. The deadline for submitting proposals is Monday, October 1, 2001, but it would be great to have feedback sooner if you're thinking about submitting something. REQUEST.URL and missing subfolders

I'm configuring standard_error_message to forward 404s to their new location. According to the Zope Book, REQUEST.URL is "The URL of the Request without query string". I think I'm getting nailed by that "without query string" part. If someone requests http://www.mysite.com/a/b and there is no 'a' object, REQUEST.URL (when accessed from standard_error_message) will be 'http://www.mysite.com/a'. I assume this is because Zope thinks 'b' is an argument being passed to 'a'. I am an absolute newbie and I have installed zope-2.3.1-win32-x86 on my computer with a cyrix 233mhz processor, 64 mb memory running win95. Saving property values to file

Hello, I have created a registration form which records the name, address, and the usual blurb ... using the properties for the folder, so that I can call it like <dtml-var "member.first_name">, <dtml-var "member.last_name">, <dtml-var "member.address"> on a dtml method. Help structuring site content.

hi, I need to both Zopify and Simplify our site. Right now we have: page.html: This generates a set of frames for a banner on the top (top.html) and a nav bar on the right (nav.html) and loads the page contents c_page.html in the right frame. I would like to just do: <dtml-var standard_html_header> Just put in all my content here for the right frame. <dtml-var standard_html_footer> And have the top, nav, and content all go where it should. zope2.4 Win32 product upgrades: DynPersist, ParsedXML

On linux upgrading was no problem at all. But windows causes headaches, cause I only have/(had) the ActiveState+Zope binary install. ActivePython is more complete than the python binaries which came with zope. MySQLdb for Win does fine. Anybody has the actual version for DynPersist.dll (for ZPatterns)? Anyhow, just grabbed the ActivePython src tree and I'll do it by myself now. ParsedXML also broke, though there's a good pyexpat.pyd in the PYTHONPATH. But I fixed that, plus a whole lotta different products also. I'll send a huge patch in another mail (PageTemplates, Xron, EMarket), mainly fixing from Globals import DateTime to from DateTime.DateTime import DateTime and getting rid of expr_globals in Eval. ParsedXML-1.1b1-win32-x86.zip was not updated for python 2.1. The whole Product loader seems to be very complicated. Even if the dynamic libs are in the path, it doesn't load. Zope product with folder as base class

When creating a container product in Python one first use ObjectManager. One can also use OFS.Folder, ZCatalog, BTreeFolder. What's the difference between these and SimpleItem? Some friendly hints and advice on the best base classes anyone? ...for a product that will act as a container for quite a few prefferably searchable objects. What I care about the most is performance and scalability. Peter

HTML() and external methods

I'm creating some external methods and rather than having my python script call a dtml method, I'd prefer to have it call a HTML instance. So I've been doing something like: testHTML = HTML('''<dtml-var hello>''') def externalMethod(self): return testHTML(self,hello="albert") This seems to work as expected. However, if the externalMethod was called from a form action, and the "hello" variable was defined in the form, I'm unable to do something like: def externalMethod(self): return testHTML(self) or def externalMethod(self): return testHTML(self,REQUEST=self.REQUEST) Instead, I have to do def externalMethod(self): return testHTML(self,hello=self.REQUEST['hello']) What's the correct way to do this?
