exposing properties to python
by Joe Little 10 Jul '01

Hello, I am developing all my logic in python classes and using Zope for the presentation so that I can use CLI and other toolsets against the same objects. In my particular case, I need to expose properties (either in property sheets or product-properties ($64K question is what is better to use!)) via python scripts either when I instantiate a ZClass based on the python base-class or in a post instantiation method in that base-class. I can't find any good python examples throughout the zope.org site. almost everything is either zclass-built and thus using property sheets via DTML I'm not on the list, so any answers, please send to me directly if not to the list as well. Also, if I shouldn't use product properties or product-instance property sheets, what should I use to communicate to python scripts from an add_form constructor or the like? I am used to python programming, but the Zope<->Python bridge hasn't made any sense to me thus far.

Checking if...

Hi all, I have been trying to find this out on my own but I´m affraid I will need your help (again). I have a folder called generic and a folder custom. like this portal_skins---- ¦--- custom ¦--- generic Well now I have the action box. And I added a action to create a new stylesheet_properties (in custom) called change colors. Now this action either links to the stylesheet_properties of generic and they will click a buton to copy the method to the custom folder. But the next time they log in they might want to change the colors (the stylesheet_properties) again. But if I send them to the generic folder again and the click the copy button they will get a error telling them the stylesheet_properties allready exists in the custom folder. So now my question: How can I make the link change depending on if there already exists a stylesheet_properties in custom (URL/custom/stylesheet_properties)and if not like them to the stylesheet_properties of generic(URL/generic/stylesheet_properties) Hope my explanation was clear. Thankz, James

ZCatalog resources
by complaw＠hal-pc.org 10 Jul '01

Is there a good resource for ZCatalog issues. I've tried Chapter 9 of the Zope book, but only get the result if they have because they have only two objects. My experience with the ZCatalog is that it returns far too many objects, the vast majority of which do not satsify the criteria. When I ask for the first set, it returns a correct result. However, changing the criteria and resubmitting (by going back, chaning the criteria, and resubmitting) gives me the exact same (overly large) result set which now does NOT fit the search criteria. I need a catalog but don't want to roll it out to users if I can't get it to work correctly. Is there some nice neat resource that explains how to get the ZCatalog to do one's bidding (or tell me what I'm doing wrong). Cheers, Ron

Hi, I'm new to zope, and was just wondering if DTML is used by other applications and if DTML is a web standard or not... Thanks, Raman.

I would think that the best way to debug your problem is to include <dtml-var REQUEST> at the bottom of your results page, below the </dtml-in> tag... That way, you can see what the form values are. ZCatalog just looks at the REQUEST namespace for submitted form values, and uses them as searches on it's indexes. So, for example, one of my applications has a method that renders some "weighted" search text for the search engine (ZCatalog) to index - my method is called "searchTextWeighted," and it outputs the text I want indexed. There is an index added to ZCatalog's index tab for "searchTextWeighted" as a TextIndex so that I can have the results indexed, and when I pass the full query in a GET or POST form value with the name of searchTextWeighted, it seems to work. A lot of getting the search set up the way you want might involve a bit of trial-and-error, some reading, patience, and some questions to the list; I'm sure you'll get it working the way you want eventually; that's the approach that I have had to take. Perhaps when I am all done with my current project (which is very search-intensive), I will write a howto... I added a ZCatalog to a folder and indexed it. In the process, it created a Report and a Search file. To test it, I input a search term (single word) into the principa field. It returned quite a few hits that seemed reasonable for the (broad or common) term that I used. Then I went back to the search form and took out the broad word and put in another word that should have returned a much narrower result set. Instead, it gave me the exact same result set, even though I knew for a fact that many of the items returned did not contain the new search term. Something is clearly not right. Thanks for the information below, however. Once I get a working ZCatalog, I'll put your tips to good use. Incidentally, how did you learn all these tips about the ZCatalog? Best wishes, Ron -----Original Message----- From: sean.upton(a)uniontrib.com [mailto:sean.upton@uniontrib.com] Sent: Monday, July 09, 2001 6:03 PM To: complaw(a)hal-pc.org Cc: zope(a)zope.org Subject: RE: [Zope] ZCatalog resources I am supposing that you are trying to search on one 'field' or mass of text; what I am about to say would require a bit of modification and re-thought if you were to combine searches on multiple fields (well, that is, if you need cross-field OR searching; AND is already a de-facto reality across fields). How is it that you are "revising" the search? I'm supposing that you are taking the original search, and combining the query verbatim with the modifications, like: originalquery + ' ' + modifications Doing this (at least in Zope 2.3.x, I think) should result in an implicit "AND" and limit the first set, but I think you need to gratuitously use parentheses. For example, in an classified ad application I have developed using ZCatalog, there are lots of job entries for engineers, but I want to modify it to only see something like environmental engineer jobs: Suppose the original query is "engineer*" - also suppose that I want to append a limiting term like "environment*" - I would rewrite the query string for the textIndex I am searching to look like: (engineer*) AND (environment*) This limits 83 items in my test example to 6 matches. and suppose, then, that I was looking for something in the Navy: ((environment*) AND (engineer*)) AND (naval) This limits 6 items in my test example to 1 match. All the extra parentheses don't seem to hurt, and seem to be necessary, to some extent. So, I guess, if you are trying to do limiting searches, you are going to have to have some code that rewrites your query text, every time wrapping your original search in parentheses and appending an AND and the new terms. The python code for this might look like: newquery='(' + oldquery + ') AND (' + newquery + ')' Then pass newquery as a form value for the index you are trying to search using your form doing a <dtml-in Catalog>. Good luck, Sean -----Original Message----- From: complaw(a)hal-pc.org [mailto:complaw@hal-pc.org] Sent: Monday, July 09, 2001 3:29 PM To: sean.upton(a)uniontrib.com Cc: zope(a)zope.org Subject: RE: [Zope] ZCatalog resources > Perhaps you can be more specific about your problems. First, I've had no problem installing or indexing. The problems come with searching for specific content. It seems that the first search returns a seemingly correct result set (meaning that the list in the result set had the criteria). However, when I revised the criteria (either to narrow the result set, or to get a completely different result set) I got the original (first) result set instead. Any change in criteria yielded the same (large) result set. Have you had that problem? Are you running Apache or a proxy in front of Zope? It might be a "byte-serving" issue. For example, byte-serving (serving between byte offsets, or a page-at-a-time to acrobat reader) is implemented by Apache > 1.3.9 (I think), but is broken in 1.3.14, and fixed by 1.3.19... Anyway, I've seen this kind of problem before... Problem w/ form writing to database
by Terry McKenna 10 Jul '01

I am trying to build a Help Desk Trouble Ticket tracking system. I want to use a web based form to allow customers to enter trouble tickets. The problem I am having is that when I submit the form, the zope development environment pulls up its native database "test" form instead of making an entry in the database. It seems I can only enter data to my external database through the Zope "test" form. Any ideas? --------------------------------------------------- "submitTicket" method: <form action="troubleTicket/newTicket" method="get"> <table> <tr> <th align=right>Name: <td><input type="text" name="name" size=32> <tr> <th align=right>Phone: <td><input type="text" name="phone" size=10> <tr> <th align=right>E-Mail: <td><input type="text" name"email" size=32> <tr> <th aligh=right>App: <td><select name="app"> <option>N/A <option>Servie Inquiry <option>Idea DataMart <option>Siebel Smart Serve <option>S4 Operations </select> <tr> <th aligh=right>Server: <td><select name="server"> <option>N/A <option>caycom3 <option>caycom4 <option>caydec1 <option>caydec2 <option>cosclim1 <option>cossi01 <option>cspcom1 <option>cspcom2 <option>cspsie05 <option>norsi01 <option>omzdie06 <option>omzsie07 <option>omzsie09 <option>s4reports <option>system2 </select> <tr> <th align=right>Priority: <td><select name="pri"> <option>4 <option>3 <option>2 <option>1 </select> </table> <table> <tr> <td> 1 = 1 hr response <tr> <td> 2 = 4 hr response <tr> <td> 3 = 24 hr response <tr> <td> 4 = 72 hr response </table> <p><h4>Description of Problem:</h4> <textarea name="description" cols="37" rows="5"> </textarea> <p><input type="submit" name="submit" value=" Submit " </form> --------------------------------------------------------------- Z SQL method "newTicket": insert into ticket3 values (<dtml-sqlvar ticketNum type="int" optional>, <dtml-sqlvar name type="string">, <dtml-sqlvar phone type="string">, <dtml-sqlvar email type="string">, <dtml-sqlvar app type="string">, <dtml-sqlvar server type="string">, <dtml-sqlvar priority type="int">, <dtml-sqlvar problem type="string">) -------------------------------------------------------------- submitTicket calls newTicket. I think submitTicket passes the values entered by the user on the form to newTicket. I thought that should be enough for NewTicket to make an entry in the database but the Zope "test" interface populates the screen when I hit submit. -Thanks in advance. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? New ZCatalog Error ?

Hi, Trying to use a ZCatalog to catalog a folder containig different types of document I found the an error. I would like to stress that this error come from a DTML Method (named summary) and that this method is not call by any DTML Document I want to catalog !!! Yes, I just want to catalog DTML Documents (as I choosed in Find Objects menu) not the DTML Method !!! I reproduced this error on Zope 2.3.(2 and 3) and Zope 2.4b3 I saw this type of errors in the mailing list before Zope 2.4b3 but the problem seems to persist if it is. Bye, FR. Fw: [Zope] pdf files dont work ??
by David Burton 10 Jul '01

My guess is that this is likely to be an Acrobat Reader issue. My company recently had problems with this kind of thing happening, and it only happened on some machines. The solution was to download the latest version of the Acrobat Reader and install that, and this fixed the problem. This was with files served from a CGI application, but nothing to do with ZOPE.
