Appreciation for new introductionary texts on Zope main page
by H.de.Wit＠SFK.NL 10 Jul '01

I would like to express my apprecation for the stories that start to appear on on the Zope website. They are in the lower right corner of http://www.zope.org. At the moment there is a really very readable piece about structured text, and a few "moments" a go there was a piece about programming the ZODB and Page Templates. I eat these kind of documentation. It gives me the chance to gradually become better in a variety of subjects without a huge effort. Thank you very much. Do not confuse 'proprietary' or 'closed source' with 'protected'. One >could develop code people can see, but has a non-open source license. I can think of a few proprietary PHp and Perl products. >Yes, you can see >the code, but legally, you are bound by license to not suck the code out >for your own version. Bill Besides all the legalese which, of course applies here and can or can-not be enforced, I am talking about "closed source" here, this is the scenario: I do not want other branches/offices that do have Zope installed and due to the current requirements have manage access (they have their own in-house development) to see our code. The need is to put our code in those Zope's but we don't want them to see, access or modify the code. Of course, pure python (or "C" for that matter) is a possible answer but my question goes directly on how to keep code within the Zope environment, closed. I am sure many people are interested in this topic. I also know it is kinda contradictory with the overall Zope concept but, the terms are what I just described. How would you solve it ? Any comments or ideas ? Edward.

exUserFolder & form-based login
by Andy Gimblett 10 Jul '01

10 Jul '01

Please can someone tell me how to get exUserFolder to perform form-based login if a user attempts to access a protected resource? At present I can only get it to do a popup. I can do form-based login _explicitly_ with it (ie if user clicks on a "log in" link), but I need this implicit behaviour too. Any tips? Propietary software with Zope. was: Zope license

Jerome Alet wrote: > 1 - You can develop proprietary software with Zope. Proprietary software with Zope..... How would someone develop "closed source" software with Zope. ? It would be easy to just twickle around with Data.fs and use "python zpasswd.py -u newuser -p newpasswd" on a fresh zope installation and take the "protected" Data.fs to get access into the source code. Or, I am missing something ? How can code be protected in Zope, at least to the same (relative) level of a compiled object code? This has been a discussion going in our company with some customers as to how to protect developed code... Comments are welcome. Edward B.

Re: [Zope] ftp problem: ZServer unhandled connect event??
by Li Dongfeng 10 Jul '01

Thanks for the response. The problem seems to be: we cannot ftp download large file (larger than 90KB). I have also tried to use DOS console ftp, also the same problem with downloading large files, message like this: ftp> get flashplayer5installer.exe 200 PORT command successful. 550 Error opening file. but I can download the files in Zope's management screen using "view". It seems this has be reported in collector No. 1027. Data.fs and admin passwords
by Nolan Cafferky 09 Jul '01

09 Jul '01

I'm installing the new Zope server for a website. I've got everything setup, and I just copied the Data.fs over into the ./var/ directory. Unfortunately, it's having problems. I try to log in as admin, but apparantly all the previous accounts are included in the Data.fs file, including admin. Running ./install to get a new password doesn't work - it gives a new password, but it's not recognized at login. What should I do? Is there some way for the owner of the Zope server to access/change accounts and passwords? Thanks, caffno(a)wwc.edu

RE: [Zope] ZCatalog resources
by sean.upton＠uniontrib.com 09 Jul '01

09 Jul '01

I am supposing that you are trying to search on one 'field' or mass of text; what I am about to say would require a bit of modification and re-thought if you were to combine searches on multiple fields (well, that is, if you need cross-field OR searching; AND is already a de-facto reality across fields). How is it that you are "revising" the search? I'm supposing that you are taking the original search, and combining the query verbatim with the modifications, like: originalquery + ' ' + modifications Doing this (at least in Zope 2.3.x, I think) should result in an implicit "AND" and limit the first set, but I think you need to gratuitously use parentheses. For example, in an classified ad application I have developed using ZCatalog, there are lots of job entries for engineers, but I want to modify it to only see something like environmental engineer jobs: Suppose the original query is "engineer*" - also suppose that I want to append a limiting term like "environment*" - I would rewrite the query string for the textIndex I am searching to look like: (engineer*) AND (environment*) This limits 83 items in my test example to 6 matches. and suppose, then, that I was looking for something in the Navy: ((environment*) AND (engineer*)) AND (naval) This limits 6 items in my test example to 1 match. All the extra parentheses don't seem to hurt, and seem to be necessary, to some extent. So, I guess, if you are trying to do limiting searches, you are going to have to have some code that rewrites your query text, every time wrapping your original search in parentheses and appending an AND and the new terms. The python code for this might look like: newquery='(' + oldquery + ') AND (' + newquery + ')' Then pass newquery as a form value for the index you are trying to search using your form doing a <dtml-in Catalog>. Good luck, Sean -----Original Message----- From: complaw(a)hal-pc.org [mailto:complaw@hal-pc.org] Sent: Monday, July 09, 2001 3:29 PM To: sean.upton(a)uniontrib.com Cc: zope(a)zope.org Subject: RE: [Zope] ZCatalog resources > Perhaps you can be more specific about your problems. I'm sure that I (and possbily > others on the list) would be able to help guide you in your set up of the > indexes you need in a manner that suits your search case. Thanks Sean. First, I've had no problem installing or indexing. The problems come with searching for specific content. It seems that the first search returns a seemingly correct result set (meaning that the list in the result set had the criteria). However, when I revised the criteria (either to narrow the result set, or to get a completely different result set) I got the original (first) result set instead. Any change in criteria yielded the same (large) result set. Have you had that problem? Refcount question
by Ron Bickers 09 Jul '01

These two refcounts just keep going up. The server has been running Zope 2.3.3 for 18 days without any problems, but unlike many of the other refcounts I've watched, these never go down. I have a 14MB, 33276 object Data.fs and the load is fairly light.
