Sum up a property from several objects
by Gitte Wange 09 Jul '01

Hello, I have a folder contaning some objects. These objects all have a property named CPU (it's an int). Now I want to iterate through the folder's objects and sum up the value of this CPU property. I have tried with this - IMHO - really bad code: <dtml-with my_computers> <dtml-in "objectValues()"> <dtml-if sequence-start> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('new_cpu',CPU)"> <dtml-else> <dtml-let cpu="new_cpu + CPU"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('new_cpu',cpu)"> </dtml-let> </dtml-if> </dtml-in> </dtml-with> But I get this error: Error Type: KeyError Error Value: cpu Any other way to do this ? (I am pretty sure there is - it's just me missing something basic here) Regards, Gitte Wange

Is it a DTML method, Document, folder, or image?
by Tommy Johnson 09 Jul '01

Hey all, let's say that I want to be able to go into a folder and find out something about each object within...namely its type. I can't seem to find the correct syntax. I can do this for the title if the objects: <dtml-in objectValues> <dtml-var title><br> </dtml-in objectValues> but I can't seem to find the 'type'. I tried different syntaxes, to no avail. Anyone know how to code this? Also, is there a way to specify a wildcard? Situation: I have separated all content from display. The user can update the site's content. All editable content goes into methods that start with 'Editable_' A folder can have one or more of these methods inside, so I want to list all available methods in a folder that start with that name. How do I achieve this? Maybe something similar to: <dtml-in objectValues> <dtml-if expr="id == 'Editable_'*"> <dtml-var id> </dtml-if> </dtml-in objectValues> Obviously, this doesn't work, but I'm looking for something similiar. Check that, I'm looking for something that works; if it doesn't resemble the example, well, I don't care! ;> Thanks in advance, Tommy Innovation: The Best Way To Predict The Future ... First, I've had no problem installing or indexing. The problems come with searching for specific content. It seems that the first search returns a seemingly correct result set (meaning that the list in the result set had the criteria). However, when I revised the criteria (either to narrow the result set, or to get a completely different result set) I got the original (first) result set instead. Any change in criteria yielded the same (large) result set. Have you had that problem? Hey Charlie, I'd vote to take it from the absolute, no-nothin' level. Do you think we could move your movie app to my server for the demo? The "CD catalog/discography" examples in some of the earlier ZClass/ZCatalog howtos are not too bad; that might be a place to start - the _OLD_ Zope Developer's Guide (which only had one chapter - on ZClasses) plus the ZCatalog Tutorial (both written by Amos Lattieir) are a good combo for this sort of example, and could easily be turned into a presentation. I can't seem to find the old Developer's guide other than a printed copy that I have from a while back, but the ZCatalog tutorial, which refers to the CD class created in the old dev guide, is a good example of a relatively trivial ZClass that can be searched... Charlie, See that's my biggest stumbling block. You really need to have a good object design and then create a ZClass if you're going to work with the ZODB. I'd love to see something simple, like a recipe card file created from scratch using ZClasses. Any "mature" Zope user willing to give it a try? Logging out a user (in code)
by Tommy Johnson 09 Jul '01

09 Jul '01

Ok, small question - I thought I saw the answer somewhere, but as luck would have it...I can't find it. I have a method that can only be viewed by a user who is logged in. But let's say that I want to put a button in a form, so that when they press it, it logs them out. I figure I'll submit the form to another method, or do some marshalling - it doesn't matter, but what I need to find out is how to log the user out with code.(kill their session, whatever) And I guess I can add another request while I'm thinking of it. Is there (I'm sure there is) to determine if a user is logged in? Something like: if user is logged in do this else do this I'll keep searching, but I appreciate anyone who has a spare second to help me out with this. Thanks in advance, Tommy Johnson Innovation: The Best Way To Predict The Future ... Is To Create It.

mystery of the server hang solved?!
by Kyler B. Laird 09 Jul '01

For quite awhile, I've been having problems with our Zope server just becoming unresponsive. Usually I note that one python process is monopolizing one of the CPUs. I turned on the detailed logging and Apache's server status, but I still couldn't peg down the problem. Last week it got better. I didn't have to restart the system nearly as often. This coincided with the conclusion of a proposal submission process that runs as part of a system that I suspected was the culprit. Things got so quiet that I decided to try the upgrade to 2.4.0b3 again. I succeeded enough that I moved it into place over the weekend. Today I ran into one of our support people who I noticed was frequently on when the server went bad. He had even complained that he was having a hard time getting to know Zope with it going down all the time. (Hint!) I mentioned that I had changed some things and it seemed more stable, and invited him to give it another try. A few minutes later, I was working with someone else when the server became unresponsive. A quick check of Apache's status showed that the support person I'd just been talking with had several processes waiting for a response. Ah ha! Well...I restarted and went digging. He didn't have much there. There wasn't even a Python Script. But then I noticed a little 'H'...in the icon for his standard_html_footer. I had modified the PUT_factory so that when text/html is uploaded, an HTMLDocument is created. Apparently standard_html_footer was created in this way. It was trying to wrap itself! I thought that there were safeguards against such recursion, but they didn't seem to catch this. It'd be nice if HTMLDocument would verify that it's not calling itself. I'm thrilled to have found the problem. We've only got about 30 authors right now. I suspect it's going to get a lot tougher when we add a few thousand. I need to get ready. (I'm planning to kill requests that take too long to complete.) I appreciate all the help I've received here in my attempt to track down this problem. --kyler

filename property of variable
by Laurie Nason 09 Jul '01

Hi guys, I have a page of multiple upload file boxes - the name of each one is generated on the fly so I don't know what the name will be when I get to the dtml method to upload the images. I also don't know how many of them will actually have an image to upload. Hence, after much trawling through previous posts I found the following code to check to see if the user has actually selected a file to upload: <dtml-if "newimage.filename"> How do I use this with 'sequence-item'? I have tried: <dtml-if "_['sequence-item'].filename"> Any ideas? Laurie Nason Baylor College of Medicine Houston TX 77030

response.write
by Phil Harris 09 Jul '01

All, I'm looking for a few ideas, as to how to detect when the connection to the browser is dropped. Basically I've got an external method which uses RESPONSE.write to send javascript to an already connected browser, this is then run and affects the page which is being viewed. OK, this works fine, *but* when the stop button is pressed on the browser the external method carries on happily running. The page in question is at https://media-1.ml.uwcm.ac.uk/pushy. Leave it a few seconds and you'll see the page update. Can anyone think of a way to detect when the connection is dropped? tia Phil phil.harris(a)zope.co.uk
