my solution for manipulating PDF

For the projects we do, we frequently need to generate a PDF file that consists of PDF files (submitted to us by proposal/paper authors) and dynamic data (from other Zope objects). Before we started The Great Zope Migration, we used LaTeX to generate the dynamic pages and then glued them together with pjscript. http://www.etymon.com/pj/pjscript.html I've been trying to find a good way to do this under Zope. I have looked at PDFlib. http://www.pdflib.com/pdflib/ I like that it has Python bindings, but for manipulation of existing PDF, we would have to purchase its sister product, PDI. More recently, I was pointed at ReportLab. http://www.reportlab.com/ This is even better; it's written in Python. (I see that it's being used by other Zopers, too.) Unfortunately, it too requires another product, PageCatcher http://www.reportlab.com/pageCatcher/ to do the things I want to do. It would be a slick integrated solution, but I might end up sing it without PageCatcher. We have money to spend, but I'm dead set against using Closed solutions right now, so neither of these appealed to me enough. Instead, I decided to fall back on pjscript. Cameron Laird helped me get started with a simple PJ document class. I made it work as a Zope External Method for trivial purposes, but then I rewrote most of it today so that I can do most everything that pjscript offers. (I'll include PJ.py, the Zope extension at the end of this message.) I was surprised at how easy it was to do this. I like the solution. I'm almost confident that I can safely encourage its wide use here. Next I'm going to work on extensions for Ghostscript (for PS->PDF conversion), LaTeX and html2ps. I'll probably revisit ReportLab, too. I only offer this because I'm guessing someone else might travel down this road someday and it could help a bit. I'd put it somewhere more permanent, but I'm not willing to commit to its correctness nor to its maintenance right now. Please smack me if I'm out of line posting such things here. Where can I see my ZClass's API?

Hi Newbie question again: I have made a couple of ZClasses and I want to manipulate then from a python script, but I don't know what methods are available to me. Can I see the python source of my new class, or see the API somehow? In more detail, if you're interested: I have made a DatePattern ZClass, which extends ObjectManager. My python script processes a form, and should add new instances of PatternInstance (another ZClass I've made) to the DatePattern in question. I can't see how to do this. Chris - I don't know enough about ports - my /etc/services file says: webcache 8080/tcp # WWW caching service webcache 8080/udp # WWW caching service do I just add a line: zope 8080/tcp # Zope ? the reason why I used 8021 is because that is what I thought it was running on - if I type localhost:8080/manage I get that netscape is unable to find the server. Unfortunately there is nothing in the documentation that says what do do. Where does the port get set and how do I reset it? BTW - RedHat rpm install ... Image <dtml-var tag>

Hi everybody, In my portal I would like people to be able to add images. But as you might understand those people don't want their pictures to get "stolen" . So I tried Zbutton.... I would like to get an image over the image. This wors fine except for the fact that if I call the image like in image_view the dtml-var tag I just sse teh tag as an image ... like http://www.sjeems.com/ilsedelange/sjeems.gif alt=sjeems etc etcetc.> Does anyone have any idea what this <dtml-var tag> does? or does anyone have any other solutions or maby has done it another way? Hope y'all can help me! James

Variable substitution in an object name

I can substitute a property name for the base of an object call with: <dtml-var expr="_[wrap].index_html(_.None,_)"> where wrap is a property that refers the name of an object But I have not been able to figure out how to use a variable to substitute the method (in this case index_html but could be index_xml or index_wap) If I use the above methodology - I get looping login boxes where it won't authenticate and when I hit cancel I get a traceback in file DT_Util.py line 142, in careful_getattr. Is there a way to do this?? Thanks Lou

A TinyTable problem

I'm having some trouble with a TinyTablePlus logging routine. I have a nearly identical setup on another Zope instance but for some reason I can't get this one to work. The TinyTable is in a subtable called 'log' along with a DTML method called 'usercnt' I put the following in the standard_html_header: <dtml-let usercnt="_.getattr(log,'usercnt')"> <dtml-call usercnt> </dtml-let> The usercnt method does a few different things but I've narrowed the problem down to these couple of lines: <dtml-unless logtable2> <dtml-call expr="REQUEST.set('logtable2','users')"> </dtml-unless> <dtml-with log> <dtml-call expr="_.getitem(logtable2).setRow(name=username_forlog,count='1')"> </dtml-with> The TinyTable is successfully updated but I always get an error page with the following traceback:  So, any ideas what's wrong? I had tried that to. It didn't work either. Here is why... I was running the code from an DTML Document, not a DTML Method. However, once I put the code in a DTML Method, it still didn't work. I think that part of the problem is that the scope I'm working with by calling the code from a DTML document, and then look for all of the DTML documents in the folder, is misplaced. What I may need is to call the parent object (a folder) to look for that bit of code... Something like <dtml-in expr="Parent.objectValeus('DTML DOcument')" sort="decision_date" reverse> <dtml-if expr="document_type == 'case'"> Do something... </dtml-if> </dtml-in> Except that I don't have the parent parameter right. I don't remember how to call a parent object. Do you think that would solve the problem? Okay, I moved all of this code into a DTML Method. Note, the DTML Method itself was called form a DTML Document. One of things I want to do is list other DTML documents that satsify a certain criteria in when someone wants to view the first DTML Document.
