I always thought Zope-Dev was for "real developers." I would certainly welcome a Zope for dummies list. One for non techicies trying to figure it out and implement it. Tree tag, python scripts & returning an object

Hi, I'm trying to use a python script in the branches_expr of <dtml-tree> to return a list of relevant nodes, but the tree tag seem to require an object for each node containing id, url attributes, etc. Is there any way of doing this using a python script, or do I have to create a dummy class in an External method instead. Gerrie, first the long answer: First, PARENTS[1] tells you that it's a python expression (a list), so you have to put it into " 's. So you now would have <dtml-in "PARENTS[1].BugsMail.getRecipients"> <dtml-var someFieldReturnedByGetRecipients> </dtml-in> Because the term is now enclosed in " 's, you're in python and you don't have the magic of dtml-in/var and friends which try to always "do the right thing". Hi Are you loading on Linux or Windows? You need to load Zope; mysql; and then install ZMySQLDA 1.1.4. I have used the latest versions of Zope (2.3.1); MySQL (2.23.36); and MySQL adapter (1.1.4) on Linux. I have tested this on Windows NT too. You may get the adapter from this location. http://www.zope.org/Members/mordred/ZMySQLDA/ZMySQLDA-1.1.4-nonbin.tar.gz/v… Follow the instructions: 1. Untar in the topmost zope folder 2. GoTo <zopefolder>/lib/python/Products/ZMySQLDA/src directory 3. Read the README file (if you have problems while running make, then follow the below said instructions) 4. Open MySQLModule.c using 'vi' or any other editor 5. In line 235, change �int� as �long�;In line 384, 1125, 1147 remove �&� found 6. Save the changes and close 7. Run make and you will find the MySQLmodule.so (linux); MySQL.pyd (windows) 8. copy this adapter file in the previous directory ../ZMySQLDA 9. You may have to copy the dtml files under <Zopefolder>/lib/python/Shared/DC/ZRDB/dtml/*.* into the previous directory ../ZRDB 10. Now restart Zope and you will find the MySQLDatabase connection. Click ADD and make the connection with the Connection string: test@domainname You're Done! Let me know, if you need help. regards, vishnu 6. ONLY in python script

assuming this folder structure: /main /zopestuff /misc /otherstuff If I do this in python script: if hasattr(context.main,'zopestuff'): # it returns TRUE!! return "found in /main/" But also, if I do it in or /misc or /otherstuff if hasattr(context.main.misc,'zopestuff'): # if returns TRUE! return "found in /main/misc/" This is because of aquisition, right. So HOW do I prevent this it happen? I want it only to true with what is called ONLY in DTML. I.e. to get the effect I'm after I would do: <dtml-with "main.misc" only> <dtml-if zopestuff> # This not true </dtml-if> </dtml-with> Peter

pcgi_publisher.py -- still needed?

I am hooking Zope and IIS together and along the way saw a comment saying, pcgi_publisher.py is no longer needed, since z2.py can publish requests. so in my zope.pcgi I changed PCGI_PUBLISHER to C:\WebSite\z2.py instead of C:\Website\pcgi\pcgi_publisher.py and it works just fine in fact its faster! Question: is there any reason to continue keeping pcgi_publisher.py in Zope? I did some quick benchmarking using httperf and it seems that using z2.py is slightly faster (Zope2.3.2b2 default /index_html), about 4.5% faster. Should I put this in the collector? I think pcgi_publisher would be nice to have as a standalone python library. but I dont see the benefits in the standard zope distribution since you can use z2.py to publish pcgi requests? or is my terminology all screwy ;p? thanks, ~runyaga

ZDP I'm a technical editor at a mid-size software company and so I might be able to speak to the question of Zope documentation. To me, what seems to be desparately lacking is a real user guide. By that, I mean a highly structured manual that is entirely focused on accomplishing common tasks and procedures, rather than on Zope concepts and API. This is not a criticism of what is available now - the more conceptual material - the Zope Book and Dieter's book - are excellent resources and required reading for anyone who wants to 'get' Zope. But (in an ideal world) there should also be a very structured set of step-by-step procedures for all of the basic tasks involved in putting together a typical site. Much of that material is there already in the HowTos but to an editor's eye the HowTos (taken as a group) are an overwhelming and utterly disorganized jumble. To do a proper user guide you would have to start from scratch and begin by working out a table of contents. In the table of contents the chapters, sections, and topic headings would not contain any references to Zope jargon (ZClasses, DTML, ZPT etc) but rather, they should be rigorously pruned down to simple objectives ("Index a Website", "Add a Navigation Bar", "Process a Form", "Connect to a SQL database" etc.). Once you have a relatively complete TOC (although obviously you can't cover everything) you can look at the existing sources - the HowTos, the Zope Book, list archives etc - and see what available material would cover the topics in the outline. To do it properly, most of the HowTos would need a great deal of pruning to get some kind of consistency, to remove the conceptual stuff (which is useful but not in this context) and to reduce them to a series of simple steps (a maximum of about ten steps per procedure). The end result would be something that would not be particularly englightening for the ZopeZen Masters who can write Python scripts in their sleep but could provide a tremendous productivity boost to the less-skilled people who can and should be doing a lot of the grunt work but need lots of handholding. I've actually been tinkering a bit with a TOC for just such a manual but I'm swamped with other projects at work and this would be almost a full time job in itself. Q:How do I get a directory...?

Is it possible to get a "dir" of the actual files in a specific folder on the server that has zope installed...? Ex: <dtml-in "c:\news\"> should return [[bookmarks.com],[hover-craft.exe],[zope_rulez.yeah]] if the dir c:\news\ contains: bookmarks.com hover-craft.exe zope_rulez.yeah /stoons PS I know Linux is the Zope-ruler, but Pesonally I do not know Linux - yet ;-)

The problem seems to be that many members (like me) are ready to answer questions on an informal ad hoc base but are quite reluctant to post a more elaborate and complete HowTo or FAQ. Dieter
