Organizing resources (was: Forking the Mailing List)
by Ben.Peter＠t-online.de 22 Apr '01

22 Apr '01

All, in the recent posts about forking the mailing list, several have suggested that it would make more sense (or that it would _also_ make sense) to make the informational resources accumulated on the list and elsewhere more accessible. Just some thoughts on this, although I certainly have no overall concept in mind that would do: - I firmly believe that with a well-accessible and organized pool of pre- answered questions the load on the list would dramatically reduce. While it is true that much of what is asked here by newbies (including me) could be answered by reading documentation, it still seems that there is a set of commonn questions and problems that remain for many. I am sure many others do not bother to subscribe to the list and ask, so it would not only be a favor to the list, but also to many other users to set up a, well, it should be no more than a well-organized FAQ. - The HowTos on zope.org are often very helpful. Yet, with about 150 of them to be searched and many of them available in all HowTo sections, it is often not easy to find the appropriate one. A system that allows other users to voice a 'helped', 'didn't help' or 'Wrong HowTo' (I think I've seen this at the Microsoft website?) would probably help to bring the really good HowTos to the people. - There are probably better systems for that, and most likely the current zope.org HowTos will not be able to cover that. error messages.
by ghaley＠mail.venaca.com 22 Apr '01

22 Apr '01

hi folks, i am trying to track down the source of something that's going wrong. problem is the log-in simply returns the start screen, but looking at the Z2.log tail, i see a set of 404 errors, with, what i hope is an error number. problem is, i don't know where to find out what the error number means. in my log i see something similar to 404 2106 404 2109 the 2106 and 2109 repeat, but i cannot find anything that explains how to interpret them. there are other entries in the log file that show 200's, which, according to the httpd specs means OK. any pointers would be greatly appreciated. ciao! greg. Debian zope2.1.6-7 installation, can't login 1st access
by basicprinting＠earthlink.net 22 Apr '01

22 Apr '01

Something is very wrong with my copy of the Zope 2.1.6-7 Debian pkg. I can't seem to get it to do anyhing. http access is messed. when I type $ lynx http://localhost:9673/ I do not get the Welcome to Zope screen I get a password prompt which doesn't accept my Super/Emergency/Administrator/accessfile username & password. repeated attempts get a 401 error screen, which says I am unathorized I have tried all the suggestions in the /usr/share/doc/zope/README.Debian.gz (All the archived messages I've run across reiterate these changes I've already tried.) $ /usr/sbin/zopectl stop $ /usr/sbin/zope-zpasswd username: superuser password: admin123 encoding: SHA domains: $ chown -R www-data.www-data /var/lib/zope/* $ /usr/sbin/zopectl start Starting Zope . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . done. #but it still doesn't give me the welcome screen and demands name/passwd $ lynx http://localhost:9673/ unable to access without authorization --retrying username: superuser password: admin123 denied 401 errorscreen Unauthorized -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- boring newbie's details of machine's setup follow -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Started with a virgin Debian Installation: powermac 7200 (ppc601/75) Format HD and install Base System CD- binary-powerpc-1.iso 08-Dec-2000 default stable archive Installer prompts for additional software, from the SimpleTaskInstaller I chose Newbie Help and Finished the install. (this is the cleanest install I've figured out as a newbie) login as root Modify sources.list point to debian.org site $ apt-get update $ apt-get -u install python-base finishes successfully $ apt-get -u install zope works away then... gives me message about changes to ports, etc then prompts for username & password. and starts up Zope successfully. At least that's what it thinks $ lynx http://localhost:9673 should at least give me the welcomescreen. but I get - cannot access without authorization I immediately stop zope with /usr/sbin/zopectl stop and then make changes suggested in README.Debian.gz as mentioned above.

Date:-header with sendmail tag
by Frank Tegtmeyer 21 Apr '01

21 Apr '01

Today I recognized that the sendmail tag doesn't generate required Date:-headers. As a workaround I use the mess822 package from Daniel J. Bernstein. I wrote a short article about that: http://www.lightwerk.com/zope/sendmail_dateheader Comments are welcome. Regards, Frank

You view the document (which, hopefully, is a file object). This should return the object in the original format. If not, you may need to set the "content_type" attribute of the object. It usually is guessed correctly (based on the filename extension), but in some cases the guess is wrong. Again, more information in URL:http://www.dieter.handshake.de/pyprojects/zope/book/chap3.html This time, the section on Site building objects. We have had problems to access PowerPoint files on a Unix (standard Apache) HTTP server from Windows Netscape clients. We could not convince Netscape that it must treat the files as binary. It always treated them as text files and added CR characters. Maybe, you have a similar problem (if the "Content-Type" is already correct). Dieter

RE: [Zope] Calling ZClass constructors programmatically...
by sean.upton＠uniontrib.com 21 Apr '01

21 Apr '01

For some reason, it doesn't work (at least for my ZClass, which subclasses ZCatalog:CatalogAware, and OFS:Folder), with code like: container.manage_addProduct['Classifieds'].AdFolder_add(...) I can't seem to publish 'Classifieds' - I get an AttributeError in Product.py for 'Classifeds'. Classifieds is a product created (only) within the ODB and contains a few ZClasses. The thing that seems strange is that this technique works fine for OFS:Folder: container.manage_addProduct['OFSP'].manage_addFolder(...) I feel fairly confident that if the container.manage_addProduct['Classifieds'] namespace could be published (shouldn't it be able to be seen?), that I would have no problem calling its constructor this way. I may end up swithching my project to the product API instead of using ZClasses just to avoid all this confusion, though; I've just already spent a bunch of time setting up Sean -----Original Message----- From: Dieter Maurer [mailto:dieter@handshake.de] Sent: Friday, April 20, 2001 11:40 AM To: sean.upton(a)uniontrib.com Cc: zope(a)zope.org Subject: Re: [Zope] Calling ZClass constructors programmatically... sean.upton(a)uniontrib.com writes: > I have been trying a bunch of different things to instantiate a ZClass > instance... Re: [Zope] Proposal of forking the zope@zope.org list
by complaw＠hal-pc.org 21 Apr '01

I agree with Tim. First, splitting the list would mean that we would have to monitor more groups. Second, I have learned a lot from the more sophisticated uses simply by keeping up with this list-group and I doubt the newbie list would be nearly as rich as the current list. Third (although I don't do it enough) I can help the newbies with those basic questions that I used to ask and in some small way contribute to the group. It is that last (important if not crucial) input that makes this list so attractive to the new users and thus enables them to get up the rather steep learning curve that Zope offers.
