How do I get a string value of a DateTime object, in a given format
by Chris Beaumont 28 Mar '01

28 Mar '01

Hello, I'm sorry to ask such a basic DTML question...I just haven't been able to get this to work.. I'm hoping to use the Python slicing format to extract the various parts of a "pCommon" or aCommon" format date (the output from an SQL query) so that I can use them individually.. What is the syntax to get the string value of this non-strftime format date object, so that I can put it into a string variable for slicing? Thank you, Chris

Hello again, I hope not you are tired of my newbie questions already :-) Finally I succeed in adding MySQL functionality to Zope but I can't add a connection. This is the error I get when I try: Error Type: IOError Error Value: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/Shared/DC/ZRDB/connectionAdd.dtml Traceback (innermost last): File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 222, in publish_module File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 187, in publish File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/Zope/__init__.py, line 221, in zpublisher_exception_hook (Object: ApplicationDefaultPermissions) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 171, in publish File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/mapply.py, line 160, in mapply (Object: manage_addZMySQLConnectionForm) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 112, in call_object (Object: manage_addZMySQLConnectionForm) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/App/special_dtml.py, line 127, in __call__ (Object: manage_addZMySQLConnectionForm) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/DocumentTemplate/DT_String.py, line 479, in __call__ (Object: manage_addZMySQLConnectionForm) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/DocumentTemplate/DT_String.py, line 408, in cook (Object: manage_addZMySQLConnectionForm) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/DocumentTemplate/DT_String.py, line 400, in read (Object: manage_addZMySQLConnectionForm) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/DocumentTemplate/DT_String.py, line 580, in read_raw (Object: manage_addZMySQLConnectionForm) IOError: (see above) Any good ideas ? But unfortunatley only very few of them have pricing or hosting options on their site. So I just wondered if someone on this list personally knows or has heard of a good Zope hoster. multiple SQL commands over ODBC
by Donald Braman 28 Mar '01

28 Mar '01

I'm trying to get two SQL commands that work seperately to work in the same ZSQL Method. The commands are Zope ZSQL -> ZODBCA -> MSODBC -> MSAccess: Update Cases SET Weighted_Score = 123 (this is a dummy number, just to test) WHERE Score > 0 SELECT * FROM Cases WHERE Weighted_Score > 0 ORDER BY Weighted_Score Both work seperately; I've also tried inserting a semicolon after the first and both commands. Any ideas? Donald Braman donald.braman(a)yale.edu

A typical Zope problem
by Chris Cioffi 28 Mar '01

28 Mar '01

I know this is a common complaint, but I just found a particularly nasty example: On the download page (http://www.zope.org/Products) I am encouraged to download and install the latest Hotfix, currently dated 3/8/2001. Looking at the link to more Zope fixes and the readme for this latest Zope hotfix I am told that this is important and should install right away. Fine. Nowhere am I given a link to instructions on HOW to install this hotfix. I don't care how easy it is to install a hotfix, please give me some documentation on what to do with this .tgz file I'm getting. I'm trying to learn Zope and the Zope way. However, for a product with a version of 2.3 to have such poorly organized documentation is just amazing. I know Zope has some really great documentation out there... And that's the problem, the documentation is just "out there" and to find it I have to luck out and find a link right to it, or read through dozens of pages that mention, but don't address the question I have. Zope is billed as a great content managment system/framework, but Zope.org site seems more a poster child for a content _publishing_ system. Management of that content is sorely lacking. I had to pass over Zope for other products twice in the last month, largely due to poor documentation: I knew Zope could do it, I just can't find any decent material on how. The Zope tutorial and Zope Book just say that development is possible but don't go into the details of developing Zope applications. (We won't go near Products...) I know I have the source, great, will you pay my salary for the next 2 months while I get a grip on that? I don't have time otherwise. I'm able to spend a little time learning, but the cost/benefit equation is making me think that Zope just isn't ready for prime time, which is a shame since I looks like Zope could provide a quantum leap foreward in making the web the platform of choice. I know this sounds just like a whiny complaint, but this is a complaint born out of a frustration at seeing what I think is a really great platform being relegated to a niche because the documentation isn't well organized. Performance under load using SQL (Postgresql)
by Mayers, Philip J 28 Mar '01

28 Mar '01

I seem to be able to kill Zope *very* easily (with about 5 requests/sec) if that request does a lot of SQL activity. Now, this activity is not avoidable, but that load is pretty puny. Also, it doesn't just seem to die either - it seems to hang completely under some circumstances. I'm using Postgresql (makes no different whether it's 7.0 or the 7.1RC1) with ZPoPyDA and/or psycopg - they both suffer from the problem. What happens is that the child threads of ZServer die, leaving me with the top-level process (doing a waitpid on it's child) and the child (doing a select on the PCGI socket) How can I debug this? The machine is plenty fast enough to handle this load, and with static pages it's fine - just the ones that make SQL calls. Surely it should degrade gracefully, rather than just *dying*? Cheers, Phil

Python Scripts: assignment error when namespace is bound
by J M Cerqueira Esteves 27 Mar '01

27 Mar '01

Greetings I just noticed that (with Zope-2.3.1b3, Python 1.5.2, under Debian 2.2) when namespace is bound (namespace=_) in Python Scripts, I can not use names accessible through the namespace as assignment targets. For instance, the top folder where I was testing had a string property named 'color_dm'. When the following simple script was called from a DTML Method color_dm = 42 return 14 I got Error Type: TypeError Error Value: no arguments expected This one: index_html = 42 return 14 resulted in Error Type: SystemError Error Value: Excessive recursion with the following repeating messages: File /usr/local/src/Zope-2.3.1b3-src/lib/python/OFS/DTMLMethod.py, line 182, in __call__ (Object: index_html) File /usr/local/src/Zope-2.3.1b3-src/lib/python/DocumentTemplate/DT_String.py, line 538, in __call__ (Object: index_html) File /usr/local/src/Zope-2.3.1b3-src/lib/python/Shared/DC/Scripts/Bindings.py, line 334, in __render_with_namespace__ (Object: serpent) There are no problems if namespace is not bound or the script is invoked directly in a URL (because of the resulting empty namespace, I believe). -- jmce: +351 919838775 ~ http://artenumerica.com/ ~ http://artenumerica.org/

Interesting Quote from zdnet
by Jeff Sasmor 27 Mar '01

27 Mar '01

Hi Zopistas. For your amusement: In this snippy article: http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/zd/20010327/tc/bad_economy_s_good_for_open_sour ce_1.html I saw on ZDNews (via "my yahoo's" front page, hence, seen by many), some fellow named John Taschek uneloquently discusses the open source movement. The interesting quote: " Digital Creations, for example, has developed an open-source language called Python and built an open-source application server out of it called Zope" Wow, I didn't know that DC created Python! Great job guys :-) And great research, ZDNet.... Regards, Jeff Sasmor (and yes, I personally know that DC did not create Python).

ANN: ZImporter 0.2beta1
by Farrell, Troy 27 Mar '01

27 Mar '01

I'm thrilled and somewhat nervous to announce the release of ZImporter 0.2beta1. ZImporter is a Zope Product that allows a user to import .zexp files through the web(ttw). ZImporter is possibly a security disaster. By allowing the import of zexp files, it opens up your zope server to import of corrupt files or intentionally dangerous material(by authorized users). Please use caution with this product. All comments and questions are welcome. http://www.zope.org/Members/tfarrell/ZImporter Troy Farrell Video Operations Technician III Williams VYVX Services Business Media Services mailto:troy.farrell@wilcom.com
