connect to mssql with sybaseda on zope on NT?
by Jlio Dinis Silva 25 Mar '01

25 Mar '01

Hi, I have sybaseda installed on zope on NT. Now I want to connect to mssql :-) I create a sybase connection and enter user, password and server info but I get an Invalid Connection String. Has anyone successfully connect to mssql with sybaseda on NT? If yes, what could I be missing here? Maybe define a sybase data source somewhere on my sybase home poiting to my mssql server? My knowledge of sybase configuration files is limited so can anyone help me here? Maybe someone who made this on Linux knows where to define the data source. Are Versions Reliable?
by Edmund Goppelt 25 Mar '01

25 Mar '01

I'm worried that Versions are not working properly on my Zope 2.3.0 web site. I'm trying to figure out whether I should continue to use versioning and/or whether I have a corrupt ZODB. What has been your experience with Versions? Is this a reliable feature of Zope? Have you ever been unable to roll back changes made in a Version or been unable to commit a Version's changes? Here's what happened: I recently committed a Version to the ZODB, but Zope showed many of the objects as still having uncommitted changes (the red diamond). Further, Zope showed many items as having changed that I know for a fact I did not edit (mainly Python scripts). Worst of all, the site became inaccessible to users, with Zope responding to page requests with a VersionLockError. Thankfully, Zope committed the changes after I saved the Version changes a second time, but the fact that Zope got confused about what had changed and what had not worries me a good deal. I don't understand why users were getting a VersionLockError--isn't the point of Versions that you can try out changes without adversely affecting your users? What is the best way to safeguard my data and web site, in your opinion? What would cause Versions to fail in this manner? Would packing the database help? -- Ed Goppelt

Re: [Zope] url question...

You've got the string calling wrong. String.split() is a "builtin" python module for DTML. You call it by _.string.split() Besides... python syntax: '/'[-1] == '/'[0] == '/' == / Besides you haven't declare string as builtin with the _. <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('url_as_list',_.string.split(URL,'/'))"> Last objectid in URL: <dtml-var "url_as_list[-1]"> Or simpler: <dtml-var expr="_.string.split(URL,'/')[-1]"> ----- Original Message ----- From: "Junk" <junk(a)gargl.net> To: "Peter Bengtsson" <peter(a)grenna.net> Sent: Friday, March 23, 2001 6:57 PM Subject: RE: [Zope] url question... > > string.split(URL,'/')[-1] > > why can't i do <dtml-var expr="string.split(URL,'/'[-1])"> ??? > > junk >

web crawlers, robots & graphs / visualisation, zope-edu
by Lee 24 Mar '01

Hi there everyone, I have heaps of questions... Can any one tell me if Web sites developed using Zope can be indexed on search engines like Google / AltaVista when those wee spider fellas visit the server..? -- Also, assuming the following is possible, what would be the best way to implement such a system (and what are the alternatives)? Background: My system facilitates the creation of student and class information databases, and holds records of students grade, attendance records, etc. The student can access this the system to retrieve their records and relevant statistics. Right now, those statistics are the max, min, median and standard deviation value for every piece of graded coursework. Problem: Is there anyway I can visualise this data? I have a few ideas - if you have any thoughts or comments, please feel welcome... 1 - A Java applet - this is the most attractive option but put your hands up if you say that you shouldn't use Zope with Java. 2 - I don't know much about Python's Tk/Tkinter - could I use that somehow? 3- I have thought about creating a big much of .GIFs. I could maybe process all the data and store the layout of the graph in a 2D array and then use these 2 plot a graph by inserting an appropriate .GIF on the page. This would be fun but it would take me years!!! 4- I've already seen that I can export my data to MS Excel. Is it possible to do this again but have the data displayed *directly* in a graph upon viewing the data? I severely doubt this is possible... 5- Great idea for a new zope product : Data visualisation & graph maker!!! ;-) Cheers for any help. Lee PS: Zope-edu folks, I've spoken to my project supervisor to see if I can donate my project to your SIG. don't know if you can use it - but it's got some good ideas. if anyone wants to see a demo drop me a line...

Re: [Zope] User_Management - Two Folders in different branches
by Carl Blesius 24 Mar '01

Dieter, Thank you! That was exactly what I was looking for! I can not believe I missed that one! Zope is such an amazing tool... with good documentation it would be superb and the book you are working on is helping it on its way (as well as all the tips you give to the list!). Keep up the good work! Carl P.S. By the way... after knowing what to look for I did find a Howto on local roles. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dieter Maurer" <dieter(a)handshake.de> To: "Carl Blesius" <cblesius(a)ix.urz.uni-heidelberg.de> Cc: <zope(a)zope.org> Sent: Saturday, March 24, 2001 9:11 PM Subject: Re: [Zope] User_Management - Two Folders in different branches | Carl Blesius writes: | > Okay... lets say I have one folder | > | > /users/John_Doe/ | > | > with an acl_users folder in it with one | > user (John_Doe). | > | > After John_Doe knows his way around Zope | > well enough I am going to let him take | > over a branch of our website | > e.g. /clinics/pathology/ | Move "John_Doe" up enough such that everything, he should take over, | is below that point. RE: [Zope] Broken Zope installation
by Mayers, Philip J 24 Mar '01

Nope - this happens on a fresh install of 2.3.1b3 (but not on 2.3.0), with any (old/imported or new) PythonScript and any DTML method - see my second email (Bug in Zope2.3.1b3 PythonScripts) Thanks for the suggestion though :o) (I think you were right about the logging - an unrelated problem I suspect) Cheers, Phil -----Original Message----- From: Dieter Maurer To: Mayers, Philip J Cc: 'zope(a)zope.org' Sent: 24/03/01 20:34 Subject: Re: [Zope] Broken Zope installation Mayers, Philip J writes: > I appear to have a broken Zope installation. Any new > PythonScripts (or any attempt to edit the existing ones) fail to do that, > saying that: > > Error Type: TypeError > Error Value: call of non-function (type list) Looks as if there is still something old around.... I would install freshly, check that PythonScripts work correctly. Then move the old "var/Data.fs" to the new installation. Check again.

Adding Folders and index_html from Python Script
by complaw＠hal-pc.org 24 Mar '01

24 Mar '01

Okay, I'm trying to create a site where the users can load information about prospective clients and then add contact information about each client. This is how it works now... I have a form that creates a folder with the name of the client as the title of the folder. No sweat. I use... context.manage_addProduct['OFSP'].manage_addFolder(id=id, title=clientName) .. which works fine to make the folder itself. However, there is nothing in the folder (i.e., no index_html file). Thus, when the user moves to the folder, they get the index_html from the parent folder. Is there a way to add a file to the newly created folder from a Python script? The contents of the file can be very easy (such as "<dtml-var standard_html_header><dtml-var standard_html_footer>"). As an asisde, I want to make the id of the folder a string that contains only allowable characters that are taken from the name that the users input (with an _ used in place of the blanks). Is there a quick easy way to do that with some library function that isn't showing up in the Python Library Reference at www.python.org? Thanks in advance, Ron
