Problems with *BIG* SQL queries
by Mayers, Philip J 18 Mar '01

18 Mar '01

I've got some problems performing and returning some large SQL queries in our Zope app. The queries are reasonably quick if done straight to the SQL server, and return about 3000 to 5000 rows - the resulting HTML (generated with a dtml-in over the results) is about 600-900kbytes. But, the queries seem to take a *long* time - Zope is spinning at about 60% CPU in the thread responsible for sending the HTTP request back. Why? I've just timed it at 1:30 for 3914 rows and 586kb of HTML. The *really* odd thing is that using "test" on the same SQL query from the management interface, it takes about 10 seconds. Now, admittedly it only shows 50 rows, but surely it can't be the batching? And no, I don't want to batch the results up. Any ideas? Is it just the dtml processing that's slowing it down? If so, how can I speed it up (PythonScript to generate the HTML?) Any advice appreciated... [newbie]selectivity?
by Dave Linsalata 18 Mar '01

18 Mar '01

Hiya, I'm looking into installing Zope just to play around with it (before I decide if I want to use it or not.) a) Can I use it selectivly? So that I can use it only for one directory tree and use plain Apache for others? b) Can I use PHP with it? I know a lot of people think it is better than PHP, but I have a lot of pages already written in PHP... Thanks! Dave

Zope & SSL on Cobalt RAQ3, how to do it.
by Simon Blandford 18 Mar '01

18 Mar '01

A while ago I posted a message asking how. Now I am posting a message saying how so that anyone searching through the archives will find it. I've used some information from the Howtos on the Zope site and adapted it to be RAQ3 specific. There is no need to re-compile Apache on the RAQ3 unless you are a glutten for punishment. First install Zope and get it running on it's default port of 8080. You probably want a start up script for init.d so here is one included at the end of this post. I installed Zope as user "zope" in /home/zope and created a special start script called "startd" for the init.d script to call which is as follows... #! /bin/sh reldir=`dirname $0` PYTHONHOME=`cd $reldir; pwd` export PYTHONHOME exec /home/zope/zope/bin/python \ $PYTHONHOME/z2.py \ -D "$@" \ -u zope & This starts Zope as user "zope" when called by root. When Zope is up and running and starts and stops OK we need to get it SSLed through Apache. Make sure that SSL is enabled in the Server/Site management for the domain you are intending to Zopify. Next we need to add the following lines to /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf at the following point of the file... # Proxy Server directives. Uncomment the following line to # enable the proxy server: #Turn Proxy on ProxyRequests On <Directory proxy:*> Order deny, allow Allow from all </Directory> #Direct proxy to Zope ProxyPass /Zope http://www.yourdomain.org:8080/ ProxyPassReverse /Zope http://www.yourdomain.org:8080/ ProxyPass /misc_ http://www.yourdomain.org:8080/misc_ ProxyPass /p_ http://www.yourdomain.org:8080/p_ ProxyVia on # To enable the cache as well, edit and uncomment the following lines: We now need to restart Apache to recognize the changes with /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd restart. Check there are no errors reported. I did not add the Proxy directives to the Virtual Host section becuase this section of the httpd.conf file is overwritten by a bunch of Perl scripts whenever you make any changes to the site. I don't mind having a /Zope directory added to all the sites as it is highly unlikely anyone will need a /Zope directory for anything else. Next, Zope must allow for all the /Zope being added to everything. Go into Zope on port 8080 and create a SiteRoot object called SiteRoot. SiteRoot is now part of the Zope distribution and there is no need to download it all over again. Enter the following information... ID : SiteRoot Tite: The base path for BK Zope with SSL Base : https://www.yourdomain.org Path : /Zope/ You should now find Zope completely unusable on port 8080 but magically wonderful on ports 80 and 443. Notice we set the base to https, not http. This forces any links in Zope to use SSL. If you completely mess up your SiteRoot in Zope and you need to rescue it you will need this magic URL... http://www.yourdomain.org:8080/__no_before_traverse__/SiteRoot/manage_main This got me out of a few jams. Hope someone out there finds all this helpful, Regards, Simon Blandford. dtml-sendmail and envelop sender [Q]
by Bruno Mattarollo 18 Mar '01

18 Mar '01

Hello, I have a question I cannot see answered anywhere... Maybe it's there but at least I cannot find it :( We are using Zope as the application server for our cybercentre (we call this to our applications that allow people to send emails to heads of governments, CEO's and so on). It's running on a Linux machine. The MTA is postfix. The workflow is as follows: a user comes to the site and decides to take on to a cyberaction and mail his congresman because he (or she) is concerned about the governement actions on the Artic (to take an example), so this cyberactivist goes to a form were he/she fills in his/her email address and fills on the message, then submits the form. From our side we have a DTML method that uses dtml-sendmail to actually send the email. We need this email to display the FROM header as from the user that filled in the form, so we use to have something like this: <dtml-sendmail MailHost="<our mailhost>"> From: <dtml-var SenderFromForm> To: <dtml-var EmailOfYourCongresMan> ... and so on ... But the issue is if by any of this bad things of life, the email of the congresman is down the bounce will go the the cyberactivist email account (SenderFromForm)! That's really bad! So looking around I noticed that bounces go to the envelope-sender so we did: <dtml-sendmail MailHost="<our mailhost>"> From: <dtml-var OurBounceProcessingAccount> From: <dtml-var SenderFromForm> To: <dtml-var EmailOfYourCongresMan> ... and so on ... But we received a complain that all the emails are showing as coming from the OurBounceProcessingAccount email address. So the question is: how are we suppose to set the envelope-sender and not display the OurBounceProcessingAccount email address in the header of the email using dtml-sendmail? Or is it a postfix issue? Thanks in advance... /B Bruno Mattarollo <bruno(a)dynamic.greenpeace.org> Systems Administrator Greenpeace International [ http://www.greenpeace.org/ ] --- Unix: You think it won't work, but if you find the right wizard, he can make it. Importing Problem - Z2 CONFLICT Competing writes at
by Ze Octavio 18 Mar '01

Hi All, We are having a problem while importing a .zexp into a clean Data.fs on Zope 2.3.0 with HotFix intalled runing on debian. We already read on this list other messages with similar error messages. We've found a good explanation for the message below from Chris McDonough: "It happens when more than one thread tries to modify the same object in storage at the same time. It's Zope's equivalent of record-locking... It's normal. There's no corruption or anything, it's telling you that it avoided a write that might have caused problems." The problem is how can we get this error if there is only one person, one thread, making modifications to Zope? Despite the error below, the folder with its objects appears to be imported normally. Could it be a corrupted data stored in zexp that I'm tring to import in this new Data.fs? This is the error message that shows up on Zope stderr, when we try to import the zexp: ------ 2001-03-15T15:31:40 INFO(0) Z2 CONFLICT Competing writes at, /manage_importObject Traceback (innermost last): File /home/zope/230/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 175, in publish File /home/zope/230/lib/python/Zope/__init__.py, line 235, in commit File /home/zope/230/lib/python/ZODB/Transaction.py, line 252, in commit File /home/zope/230/lib/python/ZODB/Connection.py, line 270, in commit ConflictError: '\000\000\000\000\000\000\023\226' Thanks in advance.
