LocalFS manage_overwrite Permissions Question
by Gary Perez 15 Mar '01

15 Mar '01

Hi, all. Using LocalFS 0.9.6 on Zope 2.2.2/Python 1.5.2 under Linux 2.4.1 Here's the scenario... Set up a folder "UserAccess", set up user defined role "rmsuser". Inside UserAccess, set up a LocalFS object "LFS" w/ proper base path. Inside UserAccess, added "acl_users" folder, added user "RMS_User", assigned role "rmsuser". Folder "UserAccess" permissions set to: Acquire = none Anonymous = none Manager = all Owner = none rmsuser = access contents information, delete local files, manage local files, overwrite local files, upload local files, view LocalFS Object permissions set to: same as above. There's an "index_html" DTML Method in "UserAccess" which has the upload form, but permissions are set to aquire = all checked, and the <input type="hidden" name="action" value="../index_html"> is included in the FORM. (Funny aside: found out 'action' was supported in the form only AFTER changing LocalFS.py... what a dolt! ;) Here's the problem... 1) When logged into Zope as the user with "Manager" role, I can upload & overwrite, no problem. 2) When logged into Zope as RMS_User with "rmsuser" role (from a totally different machine, so no problems w/ REQUEST[AUTHENTICATED_USER]), I can upload, but not overwrite. 3) Still "rmsuser" role: If I go back and change permissions on "UserAccess" and "LFS" so "rmsuser" role has all checked (identical permissions to "Manager" role), uploads OK, but still no overwrite. 4) Still "rmsuser" role: However, if I go in "UserAccess" and add local role of "rmsuser ==> Manager", upload & overwrite works. This is bad, though, because I don't want "rmsuser" to be able to access the Zope management screens. I've checked just about everywhere for that one little nugget of LocalFS/Zope truth, but it still eludes me. Is there something that I'm overlooking?? It is a very interesting thing for many of us, I think Regards Stefano <schnip> > Now, could Zope still be Zope, but call Java objects? That would seem a > fascinating concept, and well beyond my cluefulness... </schnip> Oh yes indeed it could, that is I've managed in a small way to get Zope/Python using native Java classes as if they were native to Python (almost). I did have a small example up on my machine in work, but, wouldn't you know it, I did a clean re-install of Zope today. I'll get the page back up tomorrow and post the list again. Phil

Selective packing?
by Matt Liggett 15 Mar '01

Hello, I'm new to Zope, but I'd like to use it as a basic revision-controlled, multi-user document management system. However, there are certain documents for which I want to keep revision histories forever, whereas all other objects I want to be able to pack the database and have old revisions removed. Is there any way to accomplish this? Thanks in advance, -- Matt Liggett <mml(a)pobox.com>

Python console
by spinwing＠inwind.it 15 Mar '01

Hello I have been reading some times that it is possible to start up the Pyhton interpreter and dialog with Zope while it is running. However, I have no clue how to do it, nor I found anything around, nor I do not know what I can ask it. Would somebody be so kind to give me some pointers? Thanks and regards Stefano Vedovelli

I do this all the time. Looking at your traceback, I think your custom_zodb.py file isn't quite right, and you aren't really running with a ZEO.ClientStorage, but actually using a ZODB.FileStorage directly. -Randy > -----Original Message----- > From: Dan L. You do not publish the methods of classes but of objects (or class instances). Thus, your product must instantiatiate the class and either * place the instance as Zope object in the site hierarchy (there are some restrictions to observe, the class should be an instance of "Persistent" and "Acquisition.Implicit" (or "Explicit"). * use the "__bobo_traverse__" hook to make the object URL accessible. Some of what you need to learn is in the Product Development Guide (--> zope.org) Other things, you may find in URL:http://www.dieter.handshake.de/pyprojects/zope/book/chap3.html Dieter

This would be a one-liner regexp in >PHP or Perl ... All of Python is accessible from Zope. Python has regexes. Some people choose to use DTML, which does not allow access to regexes. You don't need to do this. Don't be hard on yourself. ;-) > - Transparent User registration. When a new user visits our site I want to > re-recognize him after that. With that info, I would like to know things > like > > - how much % of users came a second time > - how much % of users viewed how many pages > - etc. If this is in terms of an "anonymous" user (one who does not log in), a Zope sessioning product can help you develop this. See FSSession, SQLSession, or CoreSessionTracking. For that matter, identifying the user with a simple cookie and doing the right procedural logic might work just as well. > - Non-transparent user registration :-) I need an "easy" (in terms of > developing, and using) way for the users to save their settings and > perhaps even choose several profiles for themselves, for address lists > and so on. This is a small matter of programming. ;-) Zope has a built-in authentication system, so making something like this isn't too hard. There's also a membership product by Bill Anderson (which I've never used) that might make this easier. The CMF (http://cmf.zope.org) might also be your ticket. > - For certain dates, like festivals or special holidays, I want to take the > whole site and "extend it" (see OOP) with a couple additional features, > and present _that_ site in a sub-domain. Other extensions might be a > message forum, email forms, rating other users, or whatever. Your first example (the calendar) is probably best done in Javascript, which Zope "supports" to the extent that it doesn't give a damn what happens on the client (;-). It acts like any other webserver in this respect. Your other examples are supported by vaious Zope products (Squishdot, MailHost, ... erm.. no module for "rating other users" that I know of). There are hundreds of Zope products that you can try. See http://www.zope.org/Products > - One thing I specially like is the "tree" view method (which is also used > in the tutorial). (This might be a way of browsing available database > entries like cities, for our users. ATM we are using more or less a flat > list which is not optimal for 29,000 database entries.) It is a special Zope feature, yes. But the tree tag sucks hard (IMHO). It's very pretty, but it's painful. It might do what you want. But it might not. > - Plug in WAP/WML and cell phone short message system capability. Look at the ZCatalog section in URL:http://www.dieter.handshake.de/pyprojects/zope/book/chap3.html for details. Dieter
