Different User Folders
by Andy McKay 28 Feb '01

28 Feb '01

Gosh how many different user folders do we have? A quick search for User and Software Products turns up 43. I've been using Generic User Folder, but it kind of sucks. Is there a better one that is 2.3 compliant, Login Manager seems obvious but I cant seen any notes about it being Zope 2.3 compliant? Is there a plan to integerate all these into one or two since they all really do the same thing? -- Andy McKay.

NT Authenticated Users
by Mark Derricutt 28 Feb '01

28 Feb '01

I'm looking at porting a DelphiCGI/IIS application over to Zope, however, the current application uses IIS in non-anonymous mode, which supplies the HTTP request with a LOGON_USER paramater, which contains the NTDOMAIN/USER of the user requesting the page. Is there anyway to do this under Zope/Python (or even Apache), one of the requirements of the application is that I can handle this automatic authentication of NT users. Mark -- There are exceptions, I'm sure, but the Windows 2000 on-line community seems to have, in general, the moral and spiritual qualities of your average porn site. Zope/DCO2 and CHAR[1] fields not working.
by Mark Derricutt 27 Feb '01

27 Feb '01

Hi, I've only recently started playing with Zope, and esp. the new DCO2 Oracle product, but far I'm liking it very much. However, I've come accross a problem when trying to access certain fields in our databases, we have several char[1] fields, used for storing 'Y'/'N' and various other "single character identifiers", however, when issueing an SQL statement such as "select user_flag_1 from staff" I get the following error: Error, exceptions.TypeError: no type converter registered for type SQLT_AFC I'm using the binary release of the oracle product running under Zope 2.3/NT . Does anyone here have any hints and/or solutions I could try to getting this resolved? Mark -- Sig goes here.

How to properly do navigation Bar without un-authorized sub-objects?
by Brad Clements 27 Feb '01

27 Feb '01

I need to "hand generate" a navigation bar, showing only those subobjects to which the current user is authorized to view. It seems as if I'd get an AttributeError when trying to access items that I can't access, but with LoginManager it pops up a login box.. Which I don't want. My design is to have each "folder" have its own "DrawNavBar" DTML- Method, whose job it is to generate it's own html.. If that folder has sub- folders, than that folder's DrawNavBar should call it's sub-folders DrawNavBar functions. To avoid a recursive loop resolving DrawNavBar, I use aq_explicit, like this: <dtml-try> <dtml-var "_.getattr(PARENTS[-1].Z.Admin.aq_explicit,'ShowNavBar')(_.None,_)"> <dtml-except AttributeError> </dtml-try> The problem with this is that I get a login prompt from LoginManager if I'm anonymous.. I suppose I could use something like dtml-in to only show those objects to which I'm authorized, but I don't want to enumerate the contents of the folder, since I know exactly what I'm looking for. So.. given an explcit path, how can I find out if the current user can 'access' that path item, such as a DTML-method? I'm not asking Zope to confirm that the object exists if I don't have access to it.. just say "no such object" or "here's the object" and not use acquisition to find it up the path. Ideas? Re: [Zope] Proposal: Include tino's patched <dtml-in> in future Zope

But until > Python Methods (and now Python Scripts) it was impractical. My first > three Zope applications were entirely in DTML, and the clients have > loved every one of them. I second that. Honestly I started to use (and learn) Zope for a big project without any Python knowledge, and made use of existing Products, new ZClass (not python) and DTML. This allowed me to show really *quickly* a good functionnal product (actually this is still in use), quite *simply* (for me), and now that i've convinced people about how great Zope is and what can be done, i'm able to request evolutions (and some reingineering) and a more "professional" developement process using Python where it *should* be. This is the great thing about Zope : You can do lot of efficient work with tools fitting your knowledge, and move smoothly to the next expertise level (or request some people to move for you). I (and other people as well ;-)) don't consider my myself as a good developper, but more as a end user with a good knowledge, and i still can use a big part of Zope Zen. IMHO this aspect is quite essential to let the maximun different people go with Zope. No need to understand ZPattern (i just can't ;- ) to make smart products. Didier.

Namespace problems

I have python method that is passed a list of country abbreviations. I want to be able to loop through this list and send each item to a ZSQL, but for some reason I keep getting Name and Key Errors. Here is what I have so far: -- <dtml-in geoList> <dtml-var "SQL.getSiteID(geoName=_[_['sequence-item']])"> </dtml-in> -- where geoList is a list "['TC', 'AG', 'AN', 'AB']" and getSiteID is the ZSQL method : select * from siteid where left(siteid, 2) = <dtml-sqlvar geoName type=string> This yield the following error: -- Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Zope Good/Bad News Article
by J. Atwood 27 Feb '01

27 Feb '01

Hey Paul, Just read your article (http://www.pault.com/zope.html) and really enjoyed it (besides comparing Java to Macs... yikes!). I agree that DC needs to really work with Zope Product Developers and help them as much as possible. I build and maintain a product and there are times when working with a new release or debugging something new in Zope that I would love to have a full fledged contact at Zope. You are correct that the first thing that people ask about Zope is "What products are there for it?" and the answer is "A lot" but not all of them well supported, useful or documented. DC should encourage and then force developers to be a bit better about documentation. I have seen product developers put up a new product with the full amount of documentation about it being "here it is... have fun." This certainly does not help all of those people who want to install and use Zope products. DC can encourage better product development and documentation by doing simple things such as T-shirt contest for best product documentation, tip, how-to and all the rest. Maybe a monthly thing that gets and keeps everyone involved. Did you see how much time people spent over at ZopeZen.org just to get that T-shirt. A sense of fun and excitement can go a long way. I also like the idea of a Zope Product Zone that links from the home page. "Downloads" does not really get the point across to most people of the depth of stuff there. Basic stuff such as how to analyze the stats and how to find a good Zope hosting provider would also go a long way. Anyway.. I wanted to thank you for you thoughts and ideas. I have CC'd the Zope mailing list (where all the developers really live) so as to share the response and encourage more. Thanks, J

Preventing WebDAV locks?
by Capesius, Alan 27 Feb '01

27 Feb '01

I have some pages configured to return Excel format to the user using the technique detailed at: http://twsite.bizland.com/twzop0014.htm When executed from Netscape everything works fine, when executed from IE 5.5, if the user opens the file directly into Excel via embedded OLE (clicks open or has the XLS associated), the client is locking the file on the server, preventing other users from accessing the data. Another client attempting to access the same file will not receive a response until the first user times out (3 minutes). Zope is unresponsive until the lock is released. Is it possible to prevent these client locks from the server? or to force read-only in Excel? The user is anonymous. Of course! Because, then, the local "lib" is found and it does not know about "foo". You might work with absolute paths and "restrictedTraverse". Alternatively, you could try to avoid the double use of "lib". Dieter
