RE: [Zope] only know HTML; how easy to learn Zope?

If I only know HTML can I realistically > learn anything beyond the very basics of Zope or > am I looking at learning Python in parallel? I don't think PHP would be any easier than learning Zope would be (although I can't say for sure since I've only glanced at it). As far as learning Python in parallel, I think it would be a good idea to learn the basics of python before tackling Zope. At least have a general knowledge of objects. If not, you could easily get into Zope with the bare essentials. Don't be surprised when you find yourself wanting to learn as much as you can about it though. > Should I start with the Zope Book? Should I start > learning python at the same time? If Learning > Python was hard, which book do you recommend? I learned a lot from the Zope Book, especially the Appendix B. I also a learned a lot from "Try it, break it, try something else". If you're gonna pick up a Python book though, I'd get O'Reilly's "Learning Python" (the mouse book). Very easy to understand and a good primer for those new to python (although not a great reference book). Also, don't forget about the Mailing list, and its archives, they're also a valuable tool in learning Zope as well. Good luck, and I hope this helps. - Justin

2.3 Security tab very slow in IE 5 compared to 2.2
by Brad Clements 27 Feb '01

27 Feb '01

Im not sure what changed in the generated HTML in 2.3, but the security tab takes about 4 seconds to appear on my PIII-500 Win2k box when running IE5.5 (haven't tried other browsers yet) However on 2.2 its very fast. Perhaps generated HTML needs to be fixed up a little. Other than background coloring, what's the difference? RE: [Zope] Zope security management
by Toby Dickenson 27 Feb '01

> My current problem revolves around the anonymous user. If I could make > 'anonymous' a local role Its not obvious, but you can do this. 1. Create a user 'Anon' (or whatever) with a blank password 2. Zope forces you to enter a domain limit, so use '*' which means 'no limit' 3. Give him the roles that you want your anonymous users to have, including local roles. 4. http://localhost:8080/acl_users/setDomainAuthenticationMode?domain_auth_mode :int=1 to turn on domain-based authorisation. This involves a small performance penalty, which can be reduced using the patch at http://classic.zope.org:8080/Collector/2002/view (which will also be in version 2.3.1) Im not sure whether thats any use to you....

Because maybe someone else chooses the names of the properties, and does so after youve finalized your logic (whether it be dtml, or PythonScript). Maybe you want to make your logic robust even if that other user is malicious (or just really accident prone) > What if one chooses "sequence-item" just for the sake of example? ;) Damn. I was sure it didnt allow hyphens in property names. IMO the *real* answer is to not implement logic in dtml. The problems (and the need for this patch) go away.

This means it is impossible to manage the http section >without sending your password in clear text if you set things up the >way you recommend. [snip] That's one thing I hate about SiteRoots - once you created them you can't manage them anymore in some situations :( But that's only true for the SiteRoot object itself. For me it's perfectly possible to manage the http section without sending my password in cleartext and I wouldn't have considered using Zope at all if that wouldn't have been possible. My SiteRoot 'http' located in the root folder looks like this: Base: http://www.myaddress.de Path: / So 'http' is _not_ a folder - it's a SiteRoot object! So it's only another possible way to access the whole site. Then in my virtual host port 80 section as a security precaution access is forbidden to anything the contains the string 'manage'. This way I can never accidentally manage the site sending a password cleartext. Also the access to the folders containing ssl-only stuff is forbidden in this section. On the other hand in the port 443 section the whole site is accessible (with few exceptions) so that I can manage everything with https. I don't know about your setup but I think this solution is very flexible so that it should be possible to adapt it to a large range of problems. Ragnar

Python monitoring script for Zope?
by Will Dennis 27 Feb '01

27 Feb '01

Hello Zopistas, I am wondering if someone has already written a Python script that will monitor Zope and do a stop/start if Zope is not responding (we are experiencing a problem with a customer's site in that Zope stops responding to GET/POST requests, but the Zope processes are still running.) AndyM has written a similar Perl script for Windows-based Zope installations, but I can't seem to find anything on Zope.org that will run on UNIX. If no such script exists, then I'll author one and throw it up on my Member page. Thanks for any info provided, Will Dennis P-Wave, Inc.

Lets put it in a context... suppose the example dtml was part of a search results page on www.zope.org. The element of the sequence might be one of my HOWTOs. I am free to add any property to my HOWTOs. Therefore I can break the dtml if I know what prefix it is using, by adding a property with the appropriate name. Everything is fine if you are happy with level of robustness, but please remind me never to trust important data to your application. > > b. If anything in the acquisision context of an element of the inner > > sequence has an attribute outer_item. > > the same like a but only if the programmer wants to use the > other element > instead > of the sequences. Ahh - I not sure if youve missed the point. The dtml will use attributes from elements of the inner sequence or it acquisition context, in preference to those of the sequence, whether the programmer wants it or not.

Proposal: Include tino's patched <dtml-in> in future Zope
by Hamish Lawson 27 Feb '01

27 Feb '01

I propose including tino's patched version of the <dtml-in> tag in a future version of Zope. http://www.zope.org/Members/tino/in_tag_patch/ It provides two enhancements: 1. For all variables that include hyphens there are aliases that use underscores. So instead of <dtml-var expr="_['sequence-item'] * 3"> you can write <dtml-var expr="sequence_item * 3"> 2. You can choose the prefix to be used for sequence variables. <dtml-in ... prefix="outer"> <dtml-in ... prefix="inner"> <dtml-var expr="outer_item * inner_item"> </dtml-in> </dtml-in> Hamish Lawson ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
