Zope hosting services?
by Scott Chapman 21 Feb '01

21 Feb '01

I am currently hosting a domain consisting of a small handful of email accounts at a non-Zope provider. I'd like to move my email accounts to a Zope provider and have Zope and my email all on one provider (with Postgresql available also). I'm after a provider with the current version of Zope available for me to learn with and begin to make applications. I don't want to learn on the 2.2.x line because I understand things have changed in 2.3.x. I'd like a provider with full remote admin capabilities for email accounts, web content, etc.. I'll be adding email accounts over time and want short turn around times on this. I also want to be able to deploy my own web apps there and make them there as well. Does anyone have any suggestions for low-cost providers to meet these requirements? I'm at $16.00/month right now and while I'm a small-time player, this is the budget I want to stay close to. Cordially, Scott

"industries.objectIds()" will return the list of id's in the folder "industries" (provided "industries" is accessible by acquisition in the current context). Reading the official Zope book or URL:http://www.dieter.handshake.de/pyprojects/zope/book/chap3.html may help you answer such questions. > b) Objects, references and ZODB > > Suppose I successfuly assign an industry object to an organization object, > how is that persisted in ZODB? Copying the industry object would be a bad idea. Logically, the industry object exists independent from the organization. Therefore, the organization should only reference it but not have its private copy of it. As suggested above, you would give the organisation a property "industry" that contains the name (aka id) of the industry object. > c) "mutable sub-objects should be treated immutably" - from a ZODB point > of view. > > I am not sure I completely understand this (I understand mutable and > immutable allright, but I do not see what makes a mutable object being > treated immutably, and how/why it affects ZODB). Python, per se, does not support persistence. To get persistence, Zope objects inherit from class "Persistence". This class tries to detect changes to an object, as, when the object is changed, the modified state must be made persistent. The class detects when you directly change an attribute of the object. Thus: o.attr= xxx is detected. However, if an attribute value is mutable, you can change the attribute value without changing the object: o.attr.append('xxxx') would append 'xxxx' to "o.attr" (assumed, this is a list) without any change to "o". The persistence machinery would not detect, that "o" has been changed and a new value must be made persistent. The change would probably got lost eventually. There are two options: 1. avoid such modifications (treating mutable attributes as immutable) in the example above, you could use alternatively: o.attr= o.attr + ['xxxx'] You recognize the explicit assignment? 2. tell the persistence machinery about the change. You do this by setting an attribute to a true value. I think, it is "_p_changed" but it might have a slightly different name. I think, 2. is the far superior option. Dieter

2.3.0 Solaris build corrupted?

> Hi everybody, I downloaded the 2.3.0 solaris build. Gunzip goes well. It gives me a checksum error while untarring. Then, I managed to start (tar xvif ignores checksums) it but there isn't at least the HTTPCacheManager product. I've got exactly the same error with 2.3.1b1 solaris tgz. Please could you have a look and tell me? > Michele

RE: [Zope] Problems running a Xron method

Well, I can't see where the problem is. Maybe somebody else can. At this point, I would start tracing. You might want to start by uncommenting the line #import pdb; pdb.set_trace() # debug in the trigger method of Xron DTMLMethod.py. Then you can examine your namespace, and maybe figure out what's missing. Good luck. -- Loren -----Original Message----- From: zope-admin(a)zope.org [mailto:zope-admin@zope.org]On Behalf Of Chris Muldrow Sent: Monday, February 19, 2001 06:18 To: Loren Stafford; zope(a)zope.org Subject: Re: [Zope] Problems running a Xron method Sorry--should've been more specific. DTML and Lists
by Leonardo Mota 21 Feb '01

21 Feb '01

Hello, I'd pretty much a newbie at Zope and running into some problems. I have to make a <dtml-tree> with it's branches being fetched from a database, that's already done but I also need to carry a variable with the whole hierarchy to the last leaf of the tree. Something like (time for nasty ascii art): +- Software 0 | +- Operational System 0.1 | +- Linux 0.1.1 | +- FreeBSD 0.1.2 +- Hardware 3 Those numbers are indexes on the database, when someone clicks on "Linux" I want to query the database for items that are related to Software/OS/Linux. I understand that I could use Zope's own file system facilities but I'm afraid if this solution is scaleable to, maybe, thousands of categories(folders). Reading <dtml-tree>'s docs I've found a list that carries what I want, "tree-state", but I have no idea on how to access list's members on DTML. I've tried <dtml-var tree-state[0]> with no success. Any suggestions or solutions? Thanks in advance Leo

PythonScript getting at various Python libraries
by Gerald Gutierrez 21 Feb '01

I'd like to get access to a bunch of libraries that Python has, like "re" and "time" and "xml" and "md5", etc. What is the standard way that I can go about doing this?

(I'm surprised, something does not sound right about this...) That, of course, is not right. Limit yourself to handing Zope simple Python structures like > > dictionaries and lists or Zope objects Alternatively, provide the necessary security information. There is a document from Brian at Zope.org that tells you what you need to do. > I'm not so sure about this "causes problems with Zope's persistence > machinery"... what does that mean? Zope stores pickles (--> Python documentation) for objects. A pickle for a class instance (usually) consists of a class reference and the pickles for the instance's members. A class reference consists of the module the class is defined in and the class name. Due to this implementation, there are a number of restrictions: * Python's pickle module requires the class to be defined at the global level of the module. This is because unpickling will import the module and then needs to access the class through its name. This would not be possible, if the class were defined in deeper structures. * "External Method" source files are not imported as modules by Zope but are instead read. For Python's pickle module, it appears as though they belong to the module "__main__". Of course, if Python imports "__main__" and looks for your class (defined in the External Method source file), it will not find the class. Thus, your object cannot be unpickled. Dieter

Didn't you learn recently how to allow selective access to module content? You asked the list about the standard way to do this and got an excellent response from Brian. Thus, you have an option. Maybe not the most optimal possible, though.... Dieter

If you really need, you may extend "sendmail": The usual proceedure would be to provide an additional attribute "smtphost_expr" that behaves exactly like "smtphost" but expects a Python expression as attribute value, evaluates it and the uses it as "smtphost" would do, if it got this attribute. The attributes of "dtml-mime" have been extended along this line. You may look at them on how to implement it. Dieter

I get the error: > Error Type: NameError > Error Value: table (The Traceback is at the end) > > Like it seems it don't like the '.'? It likes '.' but interprets it differently: Inside "...", you are in the realm of Python expressions. In Python, the "." is not part of a name (as in DTML) but it is an operator: the left operand is an object, the right one a name and the result is the object's attribute of the given name. You can use, e.g. "_['table.name']" to access the object with name "table.name" from Python. The official Zope book and URL:http://www.dieter.handshake.de/pyprojects/zope/book/chap3.html will tell you more about these issues. Dieter
