Exceptions and Python Scripts
by Chris Withers 21 Feb '01

21 Feb '01

Hi, I'd like to do a try...except in a Python Script. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I'm allowed to import the exceptions module: Error Type: ImportError Error Value: import of "Exceptions" is unauthorized Is that intended? Where should I get hold of exception classes to use in Python Scripts? To make matters worse, a lot of Zope's internals still throw string based errors, so a very general except clause is the only way to catch them. Unfortunately, the only way to analyise those exceptions is to use sys.exec_info(), but using that in a python script always throws up an authenticatino box. Any ideas how to solve these problems? cheers, Chris

Upgrade woes and product import problems
by Aaron Louie 21 Feb '01

21 Feb '01

I'm trying to upgrade to 2.3.0b1 from 2.2.5b1... I installed the new version (according to the ZopeInstall HowTo, just to be safe), which started fine. I then shutdown Zope (2.3.0b1), moved the default var/Data.fs* files to a backup directory, then copied my old Data.fs* files over. When I tried to re-start 2.3.0b1, nothing happened. No debug message either. So I put the default Data.fs* files back in and restarted successfully. Fine, I thought, the database files aren't all that necessary. All the work I'd done on the previous version had been exported to a .zexp product export file, which were all subclassed from your run-of-the-mill ZClasses (image, file, folder, object manager, ZCatalog aware) and used DTML for all methods. No PythonMethods, no FSSessions, etc. So I put the .zexp file into the "import" folder and tried to import the product from within Zope. I got this error: Error Type: AttributeError Error Value: append Traceback (innermost last): File /usr/local/zope/2-3/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 222, in publish_module File /usr/local/zope/2-3/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 187, in publish File /usr/local/zope/2-3/lib/python/Zope/__init__.py, line 221, in zpublisher_exception_hook (Object: Traversable) File /usr/local/zope/2-3/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 171, in publish File /usr/local/zope/2-3/lib/python/ZPublisher/mapply.py, line 160, in mapply (Object: manage_importObject) File /usr/local/zope/2-3/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 112, in call_object (Object: manage_importObject) File /usr/local/zope/2-3/lib/python/OFS/ObjectManager.py, line 542, in manage_importObject (Object: Traversable) File /usr/local/zope/2-3/lib/python/ZODB/ExportImport.py, line 208, in importFile AttributeError: (see above) Here's my questions: 1. Why are my old data files screwing up Zope 2.3.0b1? 2. Why can't I import my product? Note: I also tried this with 2.2.5b1 --> 2.2.5, same errors. Any insights? Thanks, ajl

enthusiastic newbie needs guidance

Hi everyone, I was a Java addict until I discovered Python and Zope. I am just getting into Zope, trying to put together a contact manager app as an exercise. I have a few questions: a) The contact manager will hold information for contacts(people) within organizations(companies); organizations will be categorized by predefined industries, etc. I am not sure how to model this; I am still a bit confused about how to approach a problem in Zope; it's so different... My first idea was this: - Create an 'Organization' ZClass, in which there is a 'Contact' ZClass - Create an 'Industry' ZClass Then: - Create an 'Organizations' folder (contains Organization instances) - Create an 'Industry' folder (contains Industry instances) Now, my question is this: how do I relate an organization instance to an industry instance? How do I materialize that possibility through the UI - I mean, how do I show the different industries in a listbox in the Organization's create/update screens? I am still quite confused about how objects in given folders have access to objects in other folders. Could someone help me on this - an example may be? b) Objects, references and ZODB Suppose I successfuly assign an industry object to an organization object, how is that persisted in ZODB? I mean, does the organization object only keep a persistent reference to the industry object, or does it copy the industry object entirely? What is the proper way to handle such cases in Zope? c) "mutable sub-objects should be treated immutably" - from a ZODB point of view. I am not sure I completely understand this (I understand mutable and immutable allright, but I do not see what makes a mutable object being treated immutably, and how/why it affects ZODB). RE: [Zope] parsing a textfile line by line -- Forgive the long me ssage

I am writing a log file parser to do (buzzword alert) "Streaming Media Metrics". I have many logfiles from streaming video/audio servers. My Streaming Provider makes the logs available on an ftp server. I import the logfiles (by hand for now, soon by Xron), and parse them with this python script (not external method): """ This is a set of Python functions that parse and report the information contained in a NetShow Server log files. """ # We begin to sort the lines by spaces. # Unlike Real Media Servers, NetShow Server log # files are entirely separated by spaces. This # makes the code really easy. import string # number of bad lines in the log file badline=0 for line in string.split(logfile,"\n"): # process each line of the log e = string.split(line) # e is a list of each element, split by the spaces. loe = len(e) # crunch the number of elements in the list if (loe == 44): # see if for some weird reason, the line is a comment line: if e[0][0] == '#': pass else: c_ip = e[0] date = e[1] time = e[2] c_dns = e[3] cs_uri_stem = e[4] c_starttime = e[5] x_duration = e[6] c_rate = e[7] c_status = e[8] c_playerid = e[9] c_playerversion = e[10] c_playerlanguage = e[11] cs_user_agent = e[12] cs_referer = e[13] c_hostexe = e[14] c_hostexever = e[15] c_os = e[16] c_osversion = e[17] c_cpu = e[18] filelength = e[19] filesize = e[20] avgbandwidth = e[21] protocol = e[22] transport = e[23] audiocodec = e[24] videocodec = e[25] channel_url = e[26] sc_bytes = e[27] c_bytes = e[28] s_pkts_sent = e[29] c_pkts_received = e[30] c_pkts_lost_client = e[31] c_pkts_lost_net = e[32] c_pkts_lost_cont_net = e[33] c_resendreqs = e[34] c_pkts_recovered_ecc = e[35] c_pkts_recovered_resent = e[36] c_buffercount = e[37] c_totalbuffertime = e[38] c_quality = e[39] s_ip = e[40] s_dns = e[41] s_totalclients = e[42] s_cpu_util = e[43] #cs_uri_query = e[44] #insert all that junk into PostgreSQL # context.sqlStreamInsertIntoNetShowRaw(c_ip = c_ip, date = date, time = time, c_dns = c_dns, cs_uri_stem = cs_uri_stem, c_starttime = c_starttime, x_duration = x_duration, c_rate = c_rate, c_status = c_status, c_playerid = c_playerid, c_playerversion = c_playerversion, c_playerlanguage = c_playerlanguage, cs_user_agent = cs_user_agent, cs_referer = cs_referer, c_hostexe = c_hostexe, c_hostexever = c_hostexever, c_os = c_os, c_osversion = c_osversion, c_cpu = c_cpu, filelength = filelength, filesize = filesize, avgbandwidth = avgbandwidth, protocol = protocol, transport = transport, audiocodec = audiocodec, videocodec = videocodec, channel_url = channel_url, sc_bytes = sc_bytes, c_bytes = c_bytes, s_pkts_sent = s_pkts_sent, c_pkts_received = c_pkts_received, c_pkts_lost_client = c_pkts_lost_client, c_pkts_lost_net = c_pkts_lost_net, c_pkts_lost_cont_net = c_pkts_lost_cont_net, c_resendreqs = c_resendreqs, c_pkts_recovered_ecc = c_pkts_recovered_ecc, c_pkts_recovered_resent = c_pkts_recovered_resent, c_buffercount = c_buffercount, c_totalbuffertime = c_totalbuffertime, c_quality = c_quality, s_ip = s_ip, s_dns = s_dns, s_totalclients = s_totalclients, s_cpu_util = s_cpu_util) # # Debugging print statements. I don't see any potential security violations (zope's paranoid sometimes) so it should be possible. This seems to be a difficult task in zope because, like Joh said, very simple processes have to be externalized (e.g. external methods) Well, once I start using external processes my code get's fragmented and scattered over scripts in various external folders. My vision, and that's why I'm using zope and not php, is to keep my code in one place (the zope object database file data.fs) and object oriented (it's a bummer to always change code in various places). Then again, it might just be my poor zope zen :) or thin documentation of zope to solve such simple problems. --- Erik Enge <erik+list(a)esol.no> wrote: > [Joh Johannsen] > > | Reading a textfile that is a zope object sounds > like a good start. > | Anyone know how to do that? > > I'm not quite sure if I understand. AuthName and Z_REALM
by Peter Bengtsson 21 Feb '01

I know I've seen a good reply here on the zope mailinglist about how to change the login realm using Apache-VirtualHosts-Proxypassing. What I want is that, when "going /manage" at any place on the server, it should still say Realm: Zope on the little box that the web browser shows whilst asking for username and password. Except! When you go to one of those folders in my site that's using a SiteRoot together with a VirtualHost in httpd/conf. How do I do this? Here's what it can look like today. <VirtualHost nsdemo.overnetdata.com> ServerAdmin peter.bengtsson(a)overnetdata.com ErrorLog logs/zope-gmislite-error_log TransferLog logs/zope-gmislite-access_log ServerName nsdemo.overnetdata.com ProxyPass / http://127.0.0.1:8080/Projects/gmislite/members/nsdemo/ ProxyPassReverse / http://127.0.0.1:8080/Projects/gmislite/members/nsdemo/ ProxyPass /p_ http://127.0.0.1:8080/p_ ProxyPass /misc_ http://127.0.0.1:8080/misc_ </VirtualHost> Best, Peter
