MS FrontPage Extensions?
by John Ash 04 May '00

04 May '00

Hi all, Has anyone done anything with integrating MS FrontPage with Zope? I know it sounds kind-of bad... but I'm getting desperate. :) We have several departments here that have non-techy people needing to maintain mostly static web pages... but I'd like to give them some additional pre-built dynamic Zope products they can easily plug into their sites too. So, in short, I would like to let them publish from FrontPage to Zope. Several problems immediately crop up: MS FrontPage makes extensive use of what it calls "private" directories (directories whose names begin with "_"). Zope cannot handle objects whose id's begin with "_" because of Python's naming conventions. Soooooooooo... when you try to publish a MS FrontPage "web" to Zope you get errors. There are other little irritations which would be nice to solve, like: changing the default document from index.htm to index_html, making use of standard_html_header and standard_html_footer, and making the server side extensions work. To solve some of these problems I created a Windows python script which takes a published MS FrontPage "web" and fixes/ftp's it to Zope. So, a person can use MS FrontPage and edit their pages. When they're done, they can publish to a directory on their local hard drive. Then they run this little python script which does the following: 1. Renames any files or directories beginning with "_" to a name that does not begin with "_". 2. Edits all html pages, changing links to files/dirs renamed in step #1. 3. Renames index.htm to index_html (*) 4. Strips off all html outside the <BODY>...</BODY> tags, replacing it with <dtml-var standard_html_header> and <dtml-var standard_html_footer> and keeping some HEAD tags in a separate file called "additional_header" (which can then be optionally included by the standard_html_header) 5. FTP's all files and associated directories to a Medusa (Zope ftp server) (*) To keep step #3 from breaking links, add an index.htm method high in the object hierarchy which simply calls index_html So far this approach seems to work quite well. Now I would like to add functionality for some of the MS FrontPage server-side extensions. Several of the SSE's seem to be almost trivial to convert into equivalent Zope dtml. Others seem more complex. General questions: 1. Has anyone gotten MS Frontpage and Zope to talk any other way? 2. Does this approach seem like a good idea? 3. Has anyone created Zope replacements for SSE's? ...or similar products? 4. Is there any interest in this? (i.e. would anyone like to help?) Please email me if you're interested or would like a copy of the script. If there's enough interest, I'll summarize the responses back to the list. Interesting mxDateTime problem (and solution)
by Malcolm Tredinnick 04 May '00

04 May '00

I've just spent most of the morning beating my head against this problem, so I thought I'd post something here in case others hit the same issues: I use Marc Lemburg's mxDateTime package extensively in my Python programs and was trying to incorporate some things using it into Zope. Unfortunately, it is apparently not possible to use it "straight out of the box" with Zope because of problems with the import path. To make DateTime work under Zope, you have to rename the directory to something *other* than DateTime (I'm calling it DateTm, for example). If you have lots of references to DateTime scattered around in your code (as I do), the simplest thing seems to be to change any 'import DateTime' lines to: import DateTm DateTime = DateTm It's ugly, but it works. :-) The reason for this is because when you run 'import DateTime', the __init__.py method tries to do 'from DateTime import *', expecting to import things from DateTime/DateTime.py. However, it appears that the python interpreter starts from the beginning of the import path and looks for the DateTime module again and stumbles across the directory, rather than DateTime.py. Since this doesn't occur outside of Zope, it is a combination of a strange path setup (or environment, I'm not sure which) under Zope and some unlucky (but usually quite ok) naming (DateTime directory and DateTime.py inside that directory). Maybe this will save somebody else some hours. :-) Cheers, Malcolm -- Malcolm Tredinnick ph: +61 2 9440 9885 CommSecure Pty Ltd mobile: 0409 663 876 email: malcolm(a)commsecure.com.au

RE: [Zope] Serving and Searching PDF's and Word Docs

Not exactly this but I store documents (word, excel, project) in a revision control system. I have written a python function that checks out and returns documents. But this only works with Merant's PVCS VM and searching within these documents in not needed... > Would you use a third party database ? Relational databases have some problems with these data types. They are usually stored as binary large objects (BLOBs). This results in some impacts on SQL. You cannot use most of the SQL features for projection and such sort of thing. Maybe you should look for a specialized database system. The problem will then be to get an appropriate database adaptor for Zope... > What about searching the documents ? This is actually a problem with ZPublisher's marshalling code, rather than the property sheet per se. There is a bug in the Collector describing it: http://classic.zope.org:8080/Collector/645/view The workaround is to supply a "bogus" value ('1970/01/01' is the one I most often use) for the property, and then in the "edit" method, to add code checking for the bogus value:: <dtml-if "REQUEST[ 'dateProperty' ] == _.DateTime( '1970/01/01' )"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set( 'dateProperty', None )"> </dtml-if> -- ========================================================= Tres Seaver tseaver(a)digicool.com tseaver(a)palladion.com

Capacity Handling?
by Monty Taylor 03 May '00

03 May '00

Hello all. I'm wondering if anyone has done something similar to something I'm thinking about doing. The company I work for does Business Data Analysis. Amongst the tools we provide to our analysts is a stream of processed news articles, and events derived from them. The events part is fine, that's not that much data, but they also want access to the original articles and the ability to do full-text searches of them. I'm working on re-writing the 'event' part of things in Zope. That part is fairly straight forward. It seems that I could also add each article to Zope as a 'News Article.' This is done a quite a lot. Then we could arrange and sort them, search them or do lots of things with them. The question: Over the past few months, we have accumulated around 2 GIGs of articles. This trend is expected to continue. Can Zope and ZCatalog handle this kind of load? Will the searching capabilities be shot in the ass if I stored the articles as external files? (Does ZCatalog even know about those things?) OR, should I stick with the articles in the filesystem with ht://dig like we've got now, and just build the interface to ht://dig in Zope? Any thoughts? Thanks. Monty

Robert, Would you mind constructing a HowTo on Zope.org about this (maybe just paste the contents of your mail message into a HowTo you create)? > -----Original Message----- > From: Robert Honore [mailto:robert@digi-data.com] > Sent: Wednesday, May 03, 2000 3:32 PM > To: zope(a)zope.org > Subject: [Zope] SUMMARY: [Zope] Problems with zope + MS SQL Server > > > Dear Fellow Zope Users, > > Many thanks go to the following persons for their patient assistance. > > Henny van der Linde, > Julio Dinis and > Julio Silva > > Success at last. > > Here, finally is what I had to do. > > After installing the ZODBC DA, I needed to ensure that the > Zope server runs as a > known username (with a known password). RE: RelationalStorage (was LocalFS)
by Chris McDonough 03 May '00

Absolutely! Here's what I think needs to be done: - finalize the recommended table structures - come up with as-generic-as-possible SQL queries for use in each Storage method that is anticipated to be used by this storage. - make sure the current table structure doesn't neglect to anticipate versioning and undo Though this should be abstracted to be able to use any SQL database, I had anticipated developing this against Oracle (using DCOracle) initially. Is this a problem for you? > -----Original Message----- > From: Jonothan Farr [mailto:jfarr@real.com] > Sent: Wednesday, May 03, 2000 3:27 PM > To: Chris McDonough; Jason Spisak > Cc: zope(a)zope.org > Subject: Re: RelationalStorage (was LocalFS) > > > > I've put some stuff about a proposed RelationalStorage in > the ZODB wiki > > at http://www.zope.org/Members/jim/ZODB > > > > Its goal is to allow you to use a SQL database as a Storage, which > > somewhat coincidentally would also get around the single-file 2GB > > limitation. > > > > I would appreciate comments (in the wiki or here).
