Zope 2.1.3 Crashes on ftp access
by Robb Shecter 18 Feb '00

18 Feb '00

Hi, I'm trying to retrieve a file via ftp, and Zope locks up: either just the ftp transfer, or occasionally the whole server. It's printing the following error message: 2000-02-18T10:28:45 ERROR(200) ZServer exception in trigger thunk: (exceptions.AttributeError:'None' object has no attribute '_producers' [/usr/local/zope/2-1-3/ZServer/medusa/select_trigger.py|handle_read|82] [/usr/local/zope/2-1-3/ZServer/FTPResponse.py|apply|145] [/usr/local/zope/2-1-3/ZServer/FTPServer.py|retr_completion|360]) Anybody got a solution? Thanks, Robb

WorldPilot Calendar function error
by Jack Ungerleider 18 Feb '00

18 Feb '00

First off let me say that WorldPilot its slick. I have been banging on it for a while and I can't seem to get around the following problem. Whenever I add an event to the calendar I get the error message and traceback shown below. I have tried a variety of combinations. This particular instance was with no adjustments to the date-time defaults. As far as I can tell its croaking on the redisplay. Ryan are you out there? Any suggestions? Anyone else on the list used WorldPilot's calendar without a problem? TIA for any suggestions. ------------start of error message------------ Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. exceptions.KeyError Sorry, a Zope error occurred. should my Zope site have multiple instances of pcgi-wrapper running? running?

subject says it all really, I have a server that is hosting three different sites (from Apache ReWrite rules) and I'm seeing this sort of thing; nobody 23793 2349 0 11:50:07 ? 0:01 /home/zope/NLE_SITES/pcgi/pcgi-wrapper /home/zope/NLE_SITES/Zope.cgi nobody 24396 2476 0 11:55:39 ? 0:00 /home/zope/NLE_SITES/pcgi/pcgi-wrapper /home/zope/NLE_SITES/Zope.cgi nobody 23816 2308 0 11:51:11 ? 0:00 /home/zope/NLE_SITES/pcgi/pcgi-wrapper /home/zope/NLE_SITES/Zope.cgi with this from 'top' PID USERNAME THR PRI NICE SIZE RES STATE TIME CPU COMMAND 23793 nobody 1 33 0 34M 34M sleep 0:00 0.02% Zope.cgi This is with a 6 Megabyte database. Is this normal? [ZGotW] Issue #5 (Open)
by Zope Guru of the Week 18 Feb '00

18 Feb '00

A new issue of "Zope Guru of the Week" is available: =================================================================== Issue #5 -- Rendering DTML in Properties =================================================================== Status: Open Zen Level: Disciple (3/8) Keywords: DTML ZClasses Submitted by: Chuck Burdick chuck.burdick(a)tradingtechnologies.com ------------------------------------------------------------------- This problem occurs when you try to make a DTMLDocument-ish ZClass. 1. Suppose you have created a ZClass that you call 'myClass'. 1. Give 'myClass' a property sheet called 'properties'. 1. Create a text property called 'content' on 'properties'. 1. Create a view to edit 'properties'. 1. Create an instance of 'myClass'. Q: If you put dtml tags in 'content', how can you render the object and interpret the tags? For example, suppose you created 'index_html' as a DTMLMethod in 'myClass' as:: <dtml-var standard_html_header> <dtml-var content> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> This will not work. It will display the text value of 'content' but the dtml tags will not have been evaluated. This is a problem I frequently encounter. I do not want to create a complicated subclass of the existing DTMLDocument classes. Instead, I want a quick-and-dirty ZClass in which DTML tags are valid. ------------------------------------------------------------------- To reply and win undying glory and mondo guru points: http://zope.palladion.com/demos/ZGotW/5

[ZGotW] Issue #4 (Closed)
by Zope Guru of the Week 18 Feb '00

18 Feb '00

The current issue of "Zope Guru of the Week" has closed: =================================================================== Issue #4 -- Best way to output from ZOPE to MS Word =================================================================== Status: Closed Zen Level: Disciple (3/8) Keywords: DTML Submitted by: Brian Hickman bkkr(a)worldnet.att.net ------------------------------------------------------------------- My clients require a printed document, along with a version in MS Word format. What is the best way to send a document created in ZOPE to MS Word? *Editor: I'd like to broaden this to include alternative strategies for exporting formatted documents from Zope, as well as more classic "report writing."* ------------------------------------------------------------------- Reviewed by: Tres Seaver tseaver(a)palladion.com ------------------------------------------------------------------- Summary - David Brown suggests two possibilities: * construct a Word document on theserver-side using an ExternalMethod and the COM interface to Word; maybe even print the document from within the EM. *Ed.: Note that this requires that you run your Zope server on Win32; you would probably need to use the unsupported "COMObject":http://www.zope.org/Products/COMObject Product. It will also require figuring out where on the hard-drive the temporary document should live, and how to stream that document out as part of the response. Has anyone actually done this?* * Generate a RichTextFormat stream, which Word can read "natively". *Ed.: this is not for the faint of heart. Here are a couple of RTF links:* o Microsoft's "spec":http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/specs/rtfspec.htm (version 1.6) o "RTF Tools":ftp://ftp.primate.wisc.edu/pub/RTF o An RTF-to-HTML "translator":http://www.sunpack.com/RTF/ *This solution may not quite meet the spec, either, if the requirement, "document in MS Word format" is not sufficiently elastic as to encompass RTF.* - Shalabh recommends using WebDAV from Word2000, which lets you open, edit, and print Zope documents using WebFolders. *Ed.: I am assuming from his enthusiasm ("Simple, Sweet and Straightforward") that Shalabh is actually using this technique. I haven't managed to make it work yet, but I haven't tried very hard, either; I wiped Office2000 from the <strike>soles of my shoes</strike> HDD after an unhappy install. This looks like a good candidate for a HowTo.* - Lalo Martins notes that Word can read HTML: "just format it in a way that looks good in Word (you'll have to use trial-and-error for that)." *Ed.: anyone have a sample stylesheet or document which would help here? Word does UGLY things when it generates HTML -- I presume that reading it is somewhat simpler. This solution also ignores the poster's stated requirement for generating a "document in MS Word format" -- I don't much care for it as a requirement (it specifies a technical solution, not a business need), but it **is** part of the problem.* WRT the broader, "report-writing" question, Lalo reports success using the "PDFDocument"://http://www.zope.org/Members/gaaros/ZpdfDocument product to generate PDF files from within Zope (I'm guessing that this is the right URL -- it looks good, anyway). *Editor's plea: when possible, **please** include relevant links when you post a reply, whether here or on the mailing list; the usefulness of your reply goes **way** up when it links the resources needed to use it.* Conclusion First, many thanks to Brian, David, Shalabh, and Lalo! All of the proposed solutions have merit, given their respective tradeoffs. PDFDocument may be the best overall "reporting" solution, giving the precise control over layout which HTML simply can't; RTF generation looks like the "sanest" approach to the problem of "extruding" a Word document; reading documents in Word through WebDAV is cool, but may not play nice with DTML: either WebDAV hands out the rendered HTML (in which case Word can read but not edit it) or WebDAV hands out the DTML source (not useful for printing, but essential for editing.) This issue points up a couple of opportunities for product development: * hacking PDFDocument to produce RTF as an option * a framework for building "canned" reports using Zope's dynamic features, e.g., ZCatalog, ZSQL, etc. -------------------------------------------------------------------

Entry Points for Zope Newbies

Before reading your rant, I had started to sketch out a "your are here -- where to go next?" map: http://www.zope.org/Members/tseaver/StartHere/ This probably really belongs in a Z[C]Wiki, so that many people can tweak and extend it. Or it should be on the ZDP site, perhaps. I don't see anything quite like it there. -- ========================================================= Tres Seaver tseaver(a)palladion.com 713-523-6582 Palladion Software http://www.palladion.com

zope for webhosting
by darcy w. christ 18 Feb '00

18 Feb '00

i'm trying to convince my webhosting service that zope is a good thing. The guy there has some concern. Could anyone help me to convince him, or are his concerns valid? Is anyone using zope in this kind of multiuser environment? > The main issue is security -- we have to be able to run each user-supplied > program with the UID of the user who owns it. If all user-supplied > applications run with the same UID (the UID of a server, or of some > pseudo-user), that would be a problem which would most probably prevent us > from being able to implement this safely in a multi-user environment. quickie question (date formatting)
by Sam Gendler 18 Feb '00

18 Feb '00

I have a DATE time field in a mysql database, that by default returns a string representing the date in the format YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss. Will the fmt modifier in the dtml-var tag understand this time format, so that I can re format it, or should I use SQL functions built into Mysql. Alternatively, I could select the epoch time version of the field from the database and then pass that to the dtml-var fmt string. Please CC my mail box directly, as I don't have the bandwidth to read the list this week.
