Apache + ZServer + SiteAccess
by Meng Kuan 17 Feb '00

Hi, I was previously using the fastcgi solution but recently switched to use anser's solution as given in the how-to: http://www.zope.org/Members/anser/apache_zserver Everything has been working solidly (and fast!) until I found out that it can't seem to do a recatalog properly. Details are: Zope 2.1.4 + apache 1.3.9 on Debian potato. Zope is served off http://myserver.com/Zope/. I have a product called Sample that subclasses ZCatalog and reindexes its objects when edited. However, now when I tried to perform an edit, the following error message results: Error Type: ValueError Error Value: Uncatalog of absent id 'Zope/Sample/Object1' My guess is that it was previously catalogued as 'Sample/Object1' but ZCatalog now gets the uid of the object as 'Zope/Sample/Object1'. Is there anything that I can do to overcome this? Will installing a SiteRoot in Catalog (my default catalog object) itself help? Any help is appreciated, Thanks Meng Kuan

Jeff, thanks for sharing your ongoing structured text efforts....unfortunately I don't have the level of understanding required to integrate your efforts into the Tres' existing product. Python product with Catalog
by Sin Hang Kin 17 Feb '00

17 Feb '00

I try to make a simple searchable python product. I could not find the proper document for it so I copy from photo product and mixed with the boring product as below. I really do not understand what I am doing, but it works. However, I do not know how to make it catalog itself automatically as catalogaware says. Where I tell which catalog the newly add object to catalog? How? Code follows: # Documentation string. __doc__ = """Term product module. """ # Version string. Usually updated automatically by CVS. __version__ = '0.1' # I used to wonder whether Zope checked these. Nope. # Now, you can compress these imports down to three lines, but that makes it # harder to document it as you go. Here's the long-winded version: from Globals import HTMLFile # fakes a method from a DTML file from Globals import MessageDialog # provid from Globals import Persistent # makes an object stick in the ZODB import OFS.SimpleItem import Acquisition import AccessControl.Role from Products.ZCatalog import ZCatalog from Products.ZCatalog.CatalogAwareness import CatalogAware """Step #1: Provide "constructors" for Zope's management interface. __init__ is all very well and good for Python, but doesn't provide a nice HTML interface or accept arguments from an HTTP request, so you need to provide some functions to act as a middle-man between Zope and your class. Use HTMLFile to produce a [pseudo-]function which hands back an appropriate DTML document based on a file sitting in your product directory. """ manage_addTermForm = HTMLFile('termAdd', globals()) def manage_addTerm(self, id, title='', definition='', REQUEST=None): """Add a term to a folder.""" self._setObject(id, Term(id, title, definition)) if REQUEST is not None: return self.manage_main(self, REQUEST) """Step #2: Provide the class for your Term object.""" class Term( OFS.SimpleItem.Item, # A simple Principia object. Not Folderish. Persistent, # Make us persistent. Yaah! Acquisition.Implicit, # Uh, whatever. AccessControl.Role.RoleManager, # Security manager. ZCatalog.ZCatalog, CatalogAware ): """Term object. This is an attempt at writing a product from scratch using mostly Python instead of ZClasses. We'll see how it all goes. """ meta_type = 'Term' # what do people think they're adding? manage_options = ( # what management options are there? {'label': 'Edit', 'action': 'manage_main'}, {'label': 'View', 'action': ''}, # defaults to index_html {'label': 'Security', 'action': 'manage_access'}, ) __ac_permissions__=( # what permissions make sense for us? ('View management screens', ('manage_tabs','manage_main')), ('Change permissions', ('manage_access',) ), ('Change Term' , ('manage_edit',) ), ('View Terms', ('',) ), ) def __init__(self, id, title='', definition=''): """initialise a new instance of Term""" ZCatalog.ZCatalog.__init__(self, id, title) self.id = id self.title = title self.definition = definition self.boringmembers = [] # self._catalog.addIndex('title', 'TextIndex') self._catalog.addIndex('definition', 'TextIndex') # self._catalog.addColumn('title') self._catalog.addColumn('definition') index_html = HTMLFile('index', globals()) # View Interface manage_main = HTMLFile('termEdit', globals()) # Management Interface def manage_edit(self, title, definition, REQUEST=None): """does this really need a doc string?""" ZCatalog.Z self.title = title self.definition = definition if REQUEST is not None: return MessageDialog( title = 'Edited', definition = '', message = "Properties for %s changed." % self.id, action = './manage_main', )

Re: Who was Zope?

Just found from "The Project Gutenberg Etext of The 1913 Webster Unabridged Dictionary Version 0.50 Letters X, Y, Z and The "New Words" supplement" at ftp://ftp.datacanyon.com/pub/gutenberg/etext96/pgw050xz.txt: <hw>Zope</hw> (?), <pos>n.</pos> [G.] (Zoöl.) <def>A European fresh-water bream (Abramis ballerus).</def> So Zope appears to be a fish made from a serpent, though Jim Fulton once said that Zope was meaningless, iirc. Reminds me of "Lego" chosen for meaninglessness later found to be meaningfull in Latin. LEE, Kwan Soo.

Re: [Zope] An adapter for DB2

The big difference between what we are doing and you is the NT vs. Linux issue. <sarcasm on> I'm sure that wont effect the value of this comment at all </sarcasm off> There is no direct DB2 connector that I have found. We went the route of using the ODBC connections. I was only testing the ability to get to some databases for Zope testing purposes. The overall project that this was to be for was put on hold by the client so I can not speak to what kind of volume could have been piped through the connection. I ran into an interesting issue getting the connection through the ODBC up and running. I loaded the UDB5 client and cataloged the databases that I wanted to hit on the local client. I then installed the ODBC components. I then defined a connection through Zope and created a method to grab some data. I spent the better part of the day trying to get Zope to talk to the database. Absolutely no luck. ... and I tried everything in the book including the reboots that NT needs (sort of like giving treats to your dog. ... it gives NT a chance at a change of pace ... then it will work happily for you until it feels it is time for another break) I left late that evening a very frustrated camper. I came back the next day not looking forward to having to figure out the problem. To my surprise, the connection was up and running like a champ. To this day I have no bloody clue as to what happened. Ever since the connection has been as stable as can be on NT. I hope this helps.

Why not make the description a text property of your Item class? You can arrange to upload a file into such a property (this is what the DTMLMethod/Document classes do, after all). RE: [Zope] dtml-in question

The "nnn" in "count-nnn" is the name of the variable you want to count. So, if your ArchiveCatalog list contains variables named "foo" and "bar", then "count-foo" will return the number of non-missing (not null) "foo" values, and "count-bar" will return the number of non-missing "bar" values. You can find out more in section 8.3 of the DTML guide, which you can browse online at http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Guides/DTML-HTML/DTML.8.3.html hth, -- Marcus [...snip] > > I tried using your suggestion and I got 0 for the number of results > found. Doing one's part - pushing ISPs to host Zope
by Darran Edmundson 17 Feb '00

17 Feb '00

I have a contract to provide a web site for a local business. The owner is internet-savy but has no comprehension (nor desire to learn) html and web-authoring. His content changes regularly and he doesn't want to pay someone to tweak his pages. Oooh, oooh, Mista Kotta (allusion to '70s American TV), I have the answer. So I have been trying to get his current provider (located conveniently across the street from his store) to Zope host. I thought the Zope community might enjoy the following ... --------------- This is from the ISP in response to my initial query. Note how this fellow has actually gone and done a bit of reading rather than "just saying no" (sorry, another allusion) to Zope: >We might be able to run zope on one of our servers. >But we probably can't offer this facility inside the time frame you >mentioned. >The easiest way to run zope appears to be use their customised web >server zserver. Which would conflict with our running Apache since they >would both want to live on port 80. >Zope also seems to want to do administration on port 8080 which we >currently use for proxy serving. It is probably possible to change that >port number so thats not necessarily a problem. -------------------------------------- And my response ... Hi Robert, Thanks very much for your informed response. Ie., thanks for taking the time to investigate Zope. Just to clarify a few things. It isn't mission-critical that the X's web site be on line by 1 March. Steve, the owner, is happy with your service (and proximity) so delaying this for "a while" is fine. Here at the RSPhysSE at ANU, the IT people use Apache for most departments. For ours, they still use the same Apache server on port 80 which calls Zope via persistant cgi. You're right that the ZServer defaults to 8080. While this can be changed on the command line to a port of your choice, my preference would be to have it sit under the existing server. I didn't do the actual installation but I believe it was a simple matter of installing Zope and adding a rewrite rule to httpd.conf. In addition to the online help and active Zope maillist (~70 messages a day), I'm sure our sysadmin James could prefer a description of stumbling blocks to watch for. Also, there are a few ISPs in Australia handling Zope sites who could probably provide assistance. Webmastering isn't my primary occupation - I'm nominally a physicist (but more of a coder than scientist) - but I've become somewhat zealous about the benefits of Zope. I'm about to launch a new site with lots of dynamic content, user-customizable CVs, on-line publication and seminar database, etc., created by *one* person in a couple of weeks of work. I can leverage most of the utility Zclasses I've written towards new projects - things like images that hold copies of different resolutions, that can automagically render themselves with captions and links to contained movies, etc. It really is a remarkable paradigm - I just wish I could purchase stock in their (private) company. I look forward to hearing from you. Cheers, Darran.

getPreviousSibling
by RC Compaan 17 Feb '00

17 Feb '00

I have a list of folders containing thumbnail images. In each folder I make a link to the previous and next folder with "getPreviousSibling" and "getNextSibling". This works perfectly in all folders except for the first one. This is my code: <dtml-if getPreviousSibling> <dtml-with getPreviousSibling> <a href="<dtml-var absolute_url>"><< <dtml-var title_or_id></a> </dtml-with> </dtml-if> And Zope says: Error Type: SystemError Error Value: infinite recursion in document template My logic says <dtml-if getPreviousSibling> should return "none" for the first folder like <dtml-if getNextSibling> returns none for the last folder in the list. What could it be? roché
