Editing via XML-RPC?

I use emacs. I want to use emacs for much of the Zope work I do. My Zope installation doesn't allow for direct ftp access through/to ZServer. (I can't change the way it's set up, either.) Since I can't ftp into ZServer, I can't use the emacs/ftp solution. Is editing in emacs and publishing to my Zope via XML-RPC feasible? It sounds simple; when a file is saved, wrap the file in an XML-RPC request, then send it to Zope. Am I missing something? - Bob

Checking if an image exists/simple question

Hi, We have a sql database with employee information. Every employee record has an MWID field. Photo's of the employees are stored in a Zope folder (mwfoto) where the id of every photo has MWID as its name. So we can display the photo like this: <img src="/psychologie/mwfoto/<dtml-var mwid>" This works fine. Now I want to check if a photo exists, and if not, display some other info. In some sort of Zope pseudocode: <dtml if exist(mwid)> showphoto <dtml else> showanotherveryinterestingpicture </dtml-if> How do I do this? Another Site Management Question

I'm building a site which is going to have content maintained by non-Zope knowledgeable users. These users are going to be able to add/delete content but not much more. I know that I can create a role for these users and that I can turn off authorization to various activities. However, it seems that even if I do this, the user can see objects for which they have no access. For example, I have a root folder into which I want the user to be able to add a specific type of Folderish ZClass I've created. The root folder also has DTML methods which I have created. I don't want my user to edit these methods, and ideally I don't even want the user to see the methods. What I want to do is provide as uncluttered a look as possible to my user. They should only be able to see the things they can modify. Is this easy to do with Zope, or would I have to invent my own management interface to handle this? Thanks. creating users

Hello List, I'm new to Zope and am investigating how to create a system where users (visiting users, not in-house users) could create an account and manage their preferences? I've looked through the Guides and HowTos but saw nothing to that effect. The closest thing i found was the chameleon folder, but this is just a single preference stored in a cookie. I really need the users to "create" a profile and "log in" through a web interface (a la excite, for instance), not the browser/server security login. There must be a Product out there that does that? Alex.

Sorry to barge in like this, but my boss is seeking python/zope developers and the head hunters out there don't have a lot of contacts in the zope community. If you are interested in working on zope, working regularly with the fine folks at Digital creations, and/or Z-commerce, have I got a job for you! My company (ZapMedia.com) is looking for a zope developer for our music and video portal site. On my recommendation they checked out Zope and Digital Creations, and they liked it. So now we've decided to build a Zope Site. Knowing that we don't have the expertise in house to build the kind of boundary pushing site we want, we've contracted with Digital Creations to help us construct the site. (For an idea of what we want to do, check out http://www.zapmedia.com. IMHO, this is also an example of how we need help with our web smithing.) Though Jim Fulton et al are doing the heavy lifting, we need a zopista in house. Ultimately this person should take over the site when DC has finished its job. Zope wisdom needed

Zope masters, listen, for the student has doubts. I am building a Cope site that will be a cooperation tool for my workgroup. Some of the other group members are not extremely computer literate, so all my interfaces have to be simple, and only contain the necessary functionality. Now, in our work, we have Items. Items have statistics and descriptions. I want to make it possible for the group members to manipulate Items. I want them to be able to see lists of Items, organized by different criteria. I want them to be able to change the statistics of Items. I want them to be able to read and change the descriptions. If they write a new description for an item offline, I want to enable them to upload this description for the Item. All this without them meeting the complexity of the Zope "manage" interface, only my own home-built tables and forms. After meditating on the Zope documentation, I have come to the belief that the right thing to do will be to create a Product with a Z class that has statistics as properties and a DTML document containing the descriptions. However, confusion clouds my mind: * How do I set properties from DTML, based on form input? * How do I edit the contents of a DTML document from a DTML method? * Is the structure I have chosen the best one? -Magnus

User Authentication Question

One of the requirements of a web site that I'm working on is the ability to restrict certain areas of the site to people who have registered with the site. I'm experimenting with GenericUserFolder in an effort to support this. The idea is that the site would use cookie-based authentication and the user would login via a registration screen. I think I understand how to do this within Zope. However, in addition to users accessing the site just to view its content, I will also have users accessing the site to manage content. When a user wants to manage content, I would like to display a different login screen or use a different login mechanism. For example, I don't want to put my content manager information in my user registration database. My question is this, is there a way to tailor authentication based on the type of access a user is asking for? Is there a way to programatically know if a user is accessing management screens (there must be, otherwise the whole security mechanism of Zope would work). Where in the Zope code would I look to gain a better understanding of how the whole security mechanism works? Any tips or pointers on this subject would be appreciated. Thanks. James W.
