New zope powered sites

Hi Guys, I am new to zope. I started about three weeks ago, and already got a couple of sites running Zope. I am not going to say it was easy. I was very frustrated but I am still going through my learning curve, and I should be able to revisit my work and improve on them in the future. The first site is at http://ads.ayna.com. The site is very simple nothing major but it was built in about 8-10 hours. The other site is http://www.aley.net/ This site is much more complex. It is a a community portal with integrated internet directory, business listing, News (using Squidot), Horoscopes, Calendar of Events (Calendar), Movies listings, Airline information, etc. We also used external Python methods to suck in content from our affiliate sites. It was soft lauched a couple of days ago, and so far the site has been stable. We are a little worried about the load, since our main Internet diretory serves over 4Million pages per month, and some of the visitors will go to this new site. We used Rewrite rules in Apache to exclude certain directories from being served by Zope and everything works like a charm. The only catch is that the site is in Arabic, but hey it will help us with the Internationalization part as we find bugs, etc.. So far the major problem has been the use of ZCatalog with Arabic. At this moment we do not have time to figure out what is the problem, so we will use our search engine to index and search the site. It will not be as beatiful as we would have wanted, but se la vie. If you have any comments, please feel free to email me. Best regards, Adonis El Fakih

another ZClass question (easy?)
by Sam Gendler 02 Dec '99

02 Dec '99

Please forgive the flurry of questions, but the ZClass documentation is not exactly chock full o' detail. If I am trying to build a ZClass that requires a database connection, how to I go about building the add form. I want it to look much like the userDb add form, with a pull down of available connections. I can construct the dtml by copying out of UserDb, but where to store the connection. Is it a property of my ZClass, or is it a method. How do I assign it. Mostly, if someone could point me at a ZClass product that does some of these things, I would greatly appreciate it. Another question has just cropped up. I cannot add ZSQL methods to the ZClass, because I don't have a db connection, but I don't want to have them connect to a particular connection, I want them to connect to the db connection that gets assigned to the instance of the ZClass. Presumably, this could also be solved with a good example ZClass. Thanks --sam

Zope Weekly News
by Mike Pelletier 01 Dec '99

01 Dec '99

G'day, Zope Weekly News is a digest of some of the useful and interesting events which have occurred on the various Zope mailing lists and the Zope.org site. It is published each Wednesday evening. Somewhat quiet this week, as much of the Zope community struggles to deal with turkey overload. New Products and Announcements * "gaaros" released a new product called FSSession. It allows you to store per-session information on the filesystem. http://www.zope.org/Members/gaaros/FSSession Updates * "anthony" updated his SQLSessions product. SQLSessions uses SQL databases to store information on a per-session basis. http://www.zope.org/Members/anthony/software/SQLSession/sqlsession_v_0_2_2_n ews * "MikeP" updated the ZDiscussions product. This release adds a preview function and makes customisation at the instance level much easier. http://www.zope.org/Members/MikeP/ZDiscussions Zope.org items * Paul Everitt has published a page with Zope logos and a ZIP file containing EPS versions. http://www.zope.org/Images/Logos.html * "TheJester" has posted a How-to on getting the SybaseDA working on FreeBSD, with patches. http://www.zope.org/Members/TheJester/SybaseDA * "hippy" has submitted a How-to explaining the use of the GenericUserFolder product to store authentication information in an SQL database. http://www.zope.org/Members/hippy/GUF_SQL_crypt * "Amos" wrote a How-to about using ZPublisher and ZServer to publish arbitrary Python modules. If you remember Bobo, this will be familiar. http://www.zope.org/Members/Amos/ZPublisher Notable Discussions * Paul Everitt put out a call for Zope Solution Providers to participate in a referral program. http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope/1999-November/014717.html * "FR Chalaoux" <chalaoux(a)cybercable.fr> announced the creation of Zope France to provide a place for Francophone Zope users to meet. Please send email for more information. http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope/1999-November/014701.html * Scott Robertson <sroberts(a)codeit.com> of CodeIt Computing has put out a call for full-time developers. CodeIt is located in southern California. http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope/1999-November/014653.html * Arjan Scherpenisse put out feelers for non-web based Zope management clients. Stephen Pitts offers a lead. http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope/1999-November/014651.html * The high volume of the Zope lists has become a topic again. Suggestions have been made to start a Zope newsgroup, but many believe that would only aggravate the problem by inviting more off-topic, spammy and flammable posts. Some have suggested a private (as in open but not part of USENET), gatewayed server. So far, no one has stepped up to the plate by producing one. http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope/1999-November/014608.html http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope/1999-November/014611.html http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope/1999-November/014613.html -- Mike Pelletier.

structured text help
by Darcy Clark 01 Dec '99

01 Dec '99

I am having a small problem with using structured text. Specifically I have a form with a text area form element that gathers entered text, i.e. <textarea name="body" cols=60 rows=5></textarea> and enters it along with some other arguments into an MySQL database using an sql method, like so : INSERT INTO announcements (announceID, course, timestamp, body, posted_by, date) VALUES (NULL, , NULL, , , ); I then display the text in another file like this : I can get every structured text element to work (including *italics*, **bold**, _underlined_ etc...) but the paragraph and lists are not working. e.g. this text : - test - test will be rendered as : - test - test The carriage returns are being entered into the database, and are still here when I get the text out, but the fmt=structured-text doesn't seem to be recognizing the carriage returns or any of the list 'tags'. This is SQL query I use to get the data back out : select timestamp,date,body,posted_by from announcements where order by timestamp DESC; any pointers on what I am doing wrong or missing ? thanks in advance, Darcy -- --------------------------------------------------- Ph: (734) 764 3377 Email: darcyc(a)engin.umich.edu URL: http://www-personal.engin.umich.edu/~darcyc/ --------------------------------------------------- 'If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate' ..... Project management tools written in Zope?
by srl 01 Dec '99

01 Dec '99

Does anyone out there know of any Zope-based project management tools? Or, for that matter, any open-source software that does project-management tasks? Stuff like: -tracking time estimates and actual hours logged on a project/task -tracking billing rates for different employees or kinds of work -tracking project phases and scheduling this has been mentioned as a major lack on another list I'm on (linuxchix), and i want to see if there's a Zope solution I can evangelize and/or recruit developers for. srl

database conversion troubles
by Denny Valliant 01 Dec '99

01 Dec '99

Hello yall, Everyone was so helpful last time I had a prob... I hope someone can help with this one too. I recently upgraded our zope system to zope2, and converted the old dbase w/no prob... almost. There is one weird thing, and I'm not sure what to do. One of the sub-directories, in the management area, is acting funny. Let me explain. When I click on the directory, instead of giving me a list of the methods and such, it brings up the index page in the main frame. Very weird. It works fine on the old install (zope 1, uh, I guess). I don't know much zope, yet, but I HAVE tried exporting just the directory, like a million different ways, but it just don't wanna work for some reason. ANY suggestions or comments would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! One more time, I'd like to thank the list for being here. I think its a great resource. I'm trying to get the use of zope popularized here, where I work, and if I can prove that there IS support, (albeit in a dif form than a 800 line or some such. Thank the lord) wore people will be willing to use it. Gracias, Denny "The life of the individual only has meaning insofar as it aids in making the life of every living thing nobler and more beautiful. Life is sacred, that is to say, it is the supreme value to which all other values are subordinate." ~ Albert Einstein ~ (1879-1955, German-born American Physicist)

My folders are rapidly filling up with these sorts of > methods and I would prefer to cut down on redundant methods if I can. Just have the form method call itself, and use DTML to detect whether or not it is being called from itself and to insert the data if so. -Michel

stripping [] from a var
by Anders Gaarsdal Holst 01 Dec '99

01 Dec '99

Hello! I have a form with a number of checkboxes (with the same name attribute). When the form is submitted I get a var in the form of: var = [checkboxvalue1, checkboxvalue2, checkboxvalue3....] I want to make a <dtml-in> loop (in a ZSQL method) using these as values. As far as I have understood, I then have to strip the [ ] from the var. How do I do this? Regards, A n d e r s G a a r s d a l H o l s t
