document the linux install process, in detail

I have been struggling with install on linux for a couple of days now. I did the one on NT in 5 seconds. It would be great describing how to do an installation, Step- by-step. Keeping it very high-level. So a below-average user could sucessfully install Zope. Something like this. Getting Python set up right for a successful Zope installation: Make sure that you have python 1.5.2 installed. You can check this by entering "python". It will come back and tell you what the version # is. To exit from the interpreter press "Ctrl-D". If you don't have 1.5.2 installed then how do you ugrade? I am not sure on this one. Can you just untar the py152.tgz file and go to town. How do you check to make sure that you have the development libraries installed. If you don't have them installed how do you do an upgrade. If you have them installed, and you have 1.5.2 installed you are ready to roll. I know that this documentation should be at python, but I didn't find it, and since Zope relies heavily on python it should be included. We want people to get it up and running ASAP. Don't give them an excuse not to use it. Let's install Zope now. Two different methods--binary install, and tarball. Now this is where I would like some direction. What user account should I use to do the install. What user account should I use to unpack the files. Should I create some accounts or groups before processing. Where do I put the files. With a binary file it stays in the same location, but with a tarball it moves. What are the kinds of decisions that you the experienced developer makes when doing an installation. It would be great to make a bullet proof installation process. My 2 pennies. Geoff Nordli

Searching through PARENTS

Is there a way for a DTMLMethod to determine if a particular folder is in its acquisition path? For example, suppose I have the following structure: / FolderA FolderB FolderC FolderD FolderE If I define a method which actually resides in FolderA (and is therefore inherited by subfolders), is there way for me to check to see if FolderB is in my PARENTS collection? If I was displaying /FolderA/FolderB/FolderC I would want my method to answer true to the question of whether or not FolderB was in my PARENTS collection. Howerver if I was displaying /FolderA/FolderD/FolderE, the answer would be false. What I really want to know is if there is a syntax which can answer the question PARENTS contains "<some id>" Thanks. I would say this: take the existing www.zope.org and make it dev.zope.org (or www.zope.org/dev or something)... a site with a developer focus, and the normal front door that those of us on these mailing lists would use. Look at Vignette's web site. Looking at their front page, there is easy access to a DHTML tour of StoryServer, a snazzy graphic in the middle highlight a couple of things that their products do for you (Speed your development, build e-relationships, extend your brand). There are links to high-level product info, and customer sites. I think it's a good idea to feature sites that use Zope, even if the sites are not well known... because it can give people an idea of things real people are doing with Zope. I would guess, at this point, that you probably won't have too much trouble getting some people to write a few paragraphs of how Zope fits in to their sites (I'd be happy to do so for Byproducts.com) I think having two front pages would be a great thing. We, as developers, want something that gives us quick, easy access to all of the Zope info that keeps us chugging along. But, I'm sure many people coming to www.zope.org are trying to figure out what it does for them. If you (DC) start building a marketing site like this, I'm sure the Zope community would pitch in with ideas for the text if you ask specific questions. (Just think of the response to the Zope banner a couple weeks ago). Kevin

Mmmmm, I don't know of you guys/galls, but... has somebody read the first chapters of ZBook (now already very old, i.e. some months)... It was in our intention to make an introduction to Zope... it stopped (almost) by the lack of interest! Luckely now some people are starting with it again (but it's still a little rusty.. ie. not much people can/will help) What I suggest is: Look at the first 2 chapters of ZBook, not only look, but read... let us know if this is usefull to you... and then HELP to extend it! When I went to the Zope site, I had almost no idea what it was good for. Now that I've been fooling more with it, I still can't say that I have a full understanding. So how many people will be checking out the site and then moving on? Probably many! I am a Cold Fusion user. I started using it because I needed to retrieve data into web pages from relational databases. Cold Fusion is great for doing that (using ODBC) and for formatting pages. It is very easy to use and to write code for. The markup language is much easier to read and understand than Zope's. I can easily get all kinds of info from the server, including cgi variables. It is very reliable. The documentation is fairly good. The user interface is pretty good, and the the source code editor (Cold Fusion Studio) is an excellent product. So why would I also be interested in Zope? First, Cold Fusion is too expensive for me to use personally or for internal, semi-supported department projects. Second, I like the idea that I could run all kinds of Python code in a simple way. This potentially lets me plug into any Python development project in the future. Third, the pre-packaged products, like discussion groups, etc., offer a very easy way to get started with them. I could also modify them if I wanted to. Fourth, I'm interested in being able to use other platforms. BTW, why isn't this mailing list on Confera? This would be a good illustration of one of Zope's capabilities. Or is Confera too clumsy to use in practice? If so, we should be aware of this and hopefully we can improve it. I think it would be very useful if some key zope applications, actual working ones like a discussion group, were available right from the Zope home page as demonstrations of what you can do with it. The "Zope Exits" section of the site is apparently intended for this purpose, but it is ineffective because 1) the name does not convey the intent, 2) the two links currently present are not good examples of the sort needed (clear, simple, with the relationship to Zope made crystal clear), and 3) you can't tell, when you go to one of these linked sites, what Zope features they use. I would like to acknowledge the hard work and creativity of those people who have worked hard to create and extend zope and its documentation, and I don't mean in any way to criticize their work. But since this topic has come up, let's face it, Zope support and explanation still has a long way to go. Thomas Passin

Javascript (in NS4 at least) cannot have ":"s in element names. ZClasses inside ZClasses

I'd like to setup a site with a simplified management screen, similar to Zope.org in that the editor of the site only has a very limited set of elements to choose from: A two-level hierarchy structured in sections and subsections, and both of them can contain one or more pages. I thought I should use ZClasses to implement this: A product "MySite", inside a ZClass "MySiteClass" (with a base class ZObjectManager). Now I thought I should create a second ZClass "Section" (also derived from ZObjectManager) inside the methods view of MySiteClass, then a ZClass "Subsection" inside "Section" and finally a ZClass "Page". I think that's what the Zope Developer Guide suggests, in "Classes inside Classes" But now I fail to tell MySiteClass that it should only take subobjects of type "Section": The "Subobjects" view of the MySiteClass class doesn't list Section (I guess since it's not a product but only a method?). I'm a bit lost here: Do I have to drop this concept with encapsulated ZClasses and should I instead setup the Section, Subsection and Page classes as products of their own ? Gregor
