Re: [Zope] RH 6.1 Startup error

I'll confirm that a vanilla RedHat 6.1 dist. with the Zope/zserver 2.0.1-4 RPMs doesn't work. This is bothersome because 6.1 (or maybe 6.0) is the only RedHat dist. that comes with a recent enough Python. I think that this is because the system logger isn't listening to a port by default. I changed /etc/rc.d/init.d/syslog.d to do this by default (with -r) & then restarted it. For the paranoid, this is yet another port being listened to, with DoS vulnerabilities mentioned in the man page. 24,25c24 < # daemon syslogd -m 0 < daemon syslogd -r -m 0 --- > daemon syslogd -m 0 You're supposed to be able to stop using the system logger with the ZSYSLOG env var, which is set to "anything" in zserver.sh, but I didn't have any luck with unsetting that. I also had to set ZSYSLOG_SERVER for some reason. ZSYSLOG_SERVER=127.0.0.1:514 Look in /var/log/messages to see that you're getting logs. Aren't there a little too many > of them? :) Looks like some neat ideas. I like the idea of abstracting html controls into cross-browser(environment) widgets but I don't think it will work very well in the same way that java AWT didn't work. To get it to work will mean the lowest common denominator of all rendered platforms is used. Also people care to much about presentation and want to get under the covers. However for those that don't a class library of complicated controls would be cool, like the calander control that exists already. One I'd like to see is a add and remove control (the one with two lists like in the ZClass inheritance dialog). The problem with dialogs like this is to create them without javascript or DHTML you would need to abstract over more than one transaction. Even more impressive is multiligual idea. Zope can supposedly handle this by aquisition but does this work? I imagine to do this it would be something like root folder1 doc1.html folder2 doc2.html method anotherlang folder1 doc1.html folder2 doc2.html method And calling with /root/folder1/doc1.html or /root/anotherlang/folder1/doc1.html depending on the language. Another way of doing all this is to say that anyone object can have multiple alternative forms. Then have something in the context determine that form. Maybe each object has a small method that can get overridden to determine which form to return at any one request. This would work for images for instance with high and low bandwidth versions. The bigest advantage of this I think is that your then modifying one hierachy instead of many and therefore are less likely to make mistakes about propagating changes.

This allows you to create different meta-data > for the same directories, depending on how they are accessed from > Zope (different subdir folders pointing at the same filesys path). That's closer to how I was planning to allow access control for specific directories and files. The problem with this approach is that I don't want to make the objects that represent directories or files in the local file system persistent Zope objects, which would be necessary to store access control data in the ZODB. I like the 'access' file approach for that reason, but I don't like the fact that it wouldn't be manageable throught the Zope interface. I honestly haven't come up with a really good solution yet. --jfarr

Here's the test form method "foo_test". <dtml-var standard_html_header> <form action="foo"> <input name="first" type="hidden"> <input name="last" type="hidden"> <input name="email" type="hidden"> <input type="submit" value="&Submit"> </form> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> Here's the method you wrote, named "foo" here, with a few changes: <dtml-let required="['first', 'last', 'email']"> <dtml-in required> <dtml-if expr="REQUEST.form[_['sequence-item']]"> <dtml-var sequence-item> exists </dtml-if> </dtml-in> </dtml-let> This shows that all fields exist.
